As Sanders described his upbringing as an American Jew in a 2016 speech: his father generally attended synagogue only on Yom Kippur he attended public schools while his mother “chafed” at his yeshiva Sunday schooling at a Hebrew school and their religious observances were mostly limited to Passoverseders with their neighbors. Larry Sanders said of their parents, “They were very pleased to be Jews, but didn’t have a strong belief in God.” Bernie had a bar mitzvah at the historic Kingsway Jewish Center in Midwood, Brooklyn, where he grew up.
In 1963, in cooperation with the Labor Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair, Sanders and his first wife volunteered at Sha’ar HaAmakim, a kibbutz in northern Israel. His motivation for the trip was as much socialistic as it was Zionistic.
As mayor of Burlington, Sanders allowed a Chabadpublic menorah to be placed at city hall, an action the ACLU contested. He publicly inaugurated the Hanukkahmenorah and performed the Jewish religious ritual of blessing Hanukkah candles. His early and strong support played a significant role in the now widespread public menorah celebrations around the globe. When asked about his Jewish heritage, Sanders has said that he is “proud to be Jewish.”
In 2016, he disclosed that he had “very strong religious and spiritual feelings”, adding, “My spirituality is that we are all in this together and that when children go hungry, when veterans sleep out on the street, it impacts me.”

Sanders is 78 years old, and is filling arenas with huge crowds of young, enthusiastic supporters. He’s used to being the underdog, but now, grudgingly, has to admit: in the Democratic race for president, he’s the front-runner.

Some Democrats are nervous that giving Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described socialist, the partys presidential nomination would make it harder to achieve their ultimate goal of making President Donald Trump a one-term president.
Jim Messina, who managed former President Barack Obamas 2012 re-election bid, said in a recent Politico interview that Trump would love to run against Sanders, noting that Republicans have already signaled they plan to hammer the socialism angle in the fall campaign.
But a new Morning Consult poll tracking the strength of the top Democratic contenders against Trump in hypothetical matchups found Sanders performs better than his rivals, including front-runner Joe Biden, with groups viewed as key to beating the unpopular incumbent.
Sanders outperforms the former vice president against Trump among voters ages 18-29, those who are not at all interested in politics and self-described independents just as he does in primary election polling against Biden.
To which Sanders responded: It means youre going to lose.

After a campaign shaken by twists and turns, Bernie Sanders abandoned the race for the White House on Wednesday, promising to work with Joe Biden, now the assured winner of the Democratic primary, who called for the rally to beat Donald Trump.
In announcing to his supporters that he was throwing in the towel, the independent senator greeted Joe Biden as a very respectable man and said that he would work with this more moderate candidate in order to advance his program firmly anchored on the left.
Noting the real tensions between the two camps, the former American vice-president, 77, reached out to supporters of 78-year-old Bernie Sanders.
I know I have to win your votes. And I know it may take time. But I want you to know that I see you, that I hear you, that I understand the sense of urgency that drives you, said wrote the man who will face Donald Trump on November 3.
In the evening, he further praised the passionate voice for progress of Bernie Sanders, who inspired and motivated millions of supporters, especially young voters.

Bernie Sanders supporters switched their allegiance to Donald Trump in large enough numbers last November to sway the election for the real estate billionaire, according to an analysis of voter data released Tuesday by the blog Political Wire. Since Trump’s shock victory over Hillary Clinton, much discussion has focused on the degree to which passionate Sanders supporters’ refusal to embrace Clinton led to the Republican winding up in the White House.
According to the analysis of the 2016 Cooperative Congressional Election Survey, fewer than 80 percent of those who voted for Sanders, an independent, in the Democratic primary did the same for Clinton when she faced off against Trump a few months later. What’s more, 12 percent of those who backed Sanders actually cast a vote for Trump.
