Donald Trump is suing to block the release of White House records related to the January 6 insurrection that he was impeached for inciting, according to court documents released Monday.
The former president is claiming executive privilege to stop former aides giving evidence to Congress, in an escalation of his efforts to stonewall investigators looking into the deadly Capitol assault.
The challenge will likely touch off an extended high-stakes showdown in the courts that will test the constitutional authority of Congress to scrutinize the executive branch.
Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol nine months ago in an effort to overturn President Joe Bidens election victory.
They had been egged on by Trump, whose fiery speech earlier that day falsely claiming election fraud was the culmination of months of baseless claims about a contest he lost fairly to Biden.
The committees request amounts to nothing less than a vexatious, illegal fishing expedition openly endorsed by Biden and designed to unconstitutionally investigate President Trump and his administration, says the lawsuit filed in Washingtons district court.
Congressional investigators are seeking testimony from officials who could speak to what Trump, who is considering running for a second term in 2024, knew about the attack beforehand, and what he did while it was ongoing.

Twitter and Facebook locked President Donald Trump’s accounts and YouTube removed one of his videos after throngs of his supporters rioted inside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, marking the harshest confrontation to date between the president and the social media companies.
Twitter also threatened to permanently suspend Trump from the platform if he violated its rules again even as a chorus of Democrats, civil rights activists and others urged the company to kick him off now for stoking attacks on the legitimacy of his election loss.
In a , Trump repeated his baseless claims that the presidential election had been stolen” while urging his supporters, who had caused the Capitol to go into lockdown by swarming the House and Senate chambers, to “go home.”
Twitter said it would require Trump to take down that post and two other tweets fanning his false claims about a rigged election, and that his account would remain locked until 12 hours after he did so. Trump appeared to have removed the tweets sometime Wednesday night, indicating he will regain access to his account Thursday morning, according to information provided by a Twitter spokesperson about its labeling policies.

Posting a more conciliatory message, he refrained from reiterating false claims of voter fraud.
Twitter said that it would ban Mr Trump permanently if he breached the platforms rules again.
The move from Twitter puts clear water between it and Facebook, which suspended him indefinitely on Thursday.
Twitter has instead given the outgoing president a final warning.
Earlier on Thursday, the popular gaming platform Twitch also placed an indefinite ban on Mr Trumps channel, which he has used for rally broadcasts.
Mr Trump tweeted several message on Wednesday, calling the people who stormed Capitol Hill patriots. He also said We love you.

Donald Trump Jr. spent Saturday mocking undercover law enforcement at the rightwing Washington, D.C. rally that flopped.
Fewer than 100 people showed up for the event near the Capitol that was intended to hail those who stormed the building on Jan. 6 as unfairly treated political prisoners. Several extremist groups warned members to stay away from the event, fearing it was a trap by law enforcement to surveil and arrest them.
That was apparently the view of Trump Jr. a supposed law and order enthusiast who made fun of members of law enforcement in the crowd who werent very effectively undercover.
He derided the officers as an absolute joke forced into these bullshit situations to entrap Americans.
Trump Jr. did not seem to recall the real danger facing police officers at the Capitol insurrection Jan. 6 as rioters marauded through the Capitol for hours unfettered. More security precautions were taken this time around at a rightwing event.
His final dig was predictably against President Joe Biden, who he said should have spent as much time being tough on the Taliban the group his dad made a deal with.
