A White House speechwriter for President Donald Trump was terminated last week after revelations that he had spoken at a conference attended by well-known white nationalists, according to three people familiar with the decision who were not authorised to speak publicly.
Darren Beattie, who was a visiting instructor at Duke University before he joined the White House speechwriting team, was fired on Friday after a media inquiry about his appearance at the 2016 H.L. Mencken Club conference, where Mr Beattie spoke on a panel alongside Peter Brimelow.
Mr Brimelow, founder of the anti-immigrant website Vdare.com, is a “white nationalist” and “regularly publishes works by white supremacists, anti-Semites, and others on the radical right,” according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an advocacy group that tracks extremists.

In their coverage, multiple publications commented that the distinction Miller made between the Statue of Liberty and Lazarus’ poem has been a popular talking point among the white supremacist segments of the alt-right. The Post‘s Michelle Ye Hee Lee stated that “Neither got it quite right about the Statue of Liberty … While the poem itself was not a part of the original statue, it actually was commissioned in 1883 to help raise funds for the pedestal” and “gave another layer of meaning to the statue beyond its abolitionist message.”

On election night in November 2000, as the outcome of the neck-and-neck vote remained elusive, speechwriter Jeff Nussbaum had drafted three possible speeches for his boss, Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore. One was for a Gore victory, another was for a Gore defeat and a third was for a scenario in which Gore won the electoral vote but lost the popular vote.
Gore didnt deliver any of them. Instead, he won the popular vote but lost the electoral count to George W. Bush a shocking result that was affirmed in a controversial Supreme Court decision weeks later. Nussbaums speeches, which would have ushered in an alternate ending, were lost to history.
But that night marked the first stop on a scavenger hunt whose clues Nussbaum has been following for two decades. The result is his new bookUndelivered: The Never-Heard Speeches That Would Have Rewritten History, which comes out today just weeks after Nussbaum stepped down from serving as a speechwriter to President Joe Biden.
It started me thinking, there must be other instances in history and not just elections, which are obvious where an ultimate outcome wasnt just envisioned, the words that would accompany that outcome were drafted, Nussbaum told Jewish Insider. WASHINGTON There are two categories of speechwriters in Washington, but only one of them can survive for long in President Trumps White House.
The first type of which there are many examples in both parties is defined by those who have used the coveted role of presidential speechwriter as the jumping-off point for a lucrative career as a political commentator, and seem headed in that direction from the time they arrive at the White House.
The second category is personified by little-known aides like Vince Haley and Ross Worthington, the speechwriters who have assembled the State of the Union speech Mr. Trump will deliver Tuesday night with its theme of the Great American Comeback, and will give the president all the credit.
The president is a best-selling author and deeply gifted orator who packs arenas and has a meticulous and carefully honed method for writing his speeches, Hogan Gidley, a White House spokesman, said in a statement, whether it be at a rally, a manufacturing plant opening or the State of the Union. What the American people hear is 100 percent President Trumps own words.

“While we plan on cooperating with the Committee within reason, we are bewildered as to why Mr. Surabian is being subpoenaed in the first place,” Surabian’s lawyer, Daniel Bean, told ABC News in a statement. “He had nothing at all to do with the events that took place at the Capital that day, zero involvement in organizing the rally that preceded it and was off the payroll of the Trump campaign as of November 15, 2020.”

His lawyers argued before the Senate that the president did not call for violence against lawmakers or Capitol Police.
The committee has asked all three witnesses to turn over records by Jan. 24 and appear for interviews at the end of the month, or early February.
To date, the panel has publicly disclosed 53 subpoenas, and investigators have obtained tens of thousands of pages of records, including some from the Trump White House, and text messages and emails provided by Mark Meadows, who served as Trump’s last White House chief of staff.

Trump is scheduled to take the stage Friday at 1 p.m. ET, at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, as part of the three-day event that began Thursday and concludes Saturday.
