Fact Check: Miscaptioned Image Of Vendors Selling Trump Gear Outside Us Capitol Intended As Satire

âNever too Earlyâ? say Trump Supporters selling 2024 Presidential Merchandise along 2nd Near Wy. Blvd

4 Min Read

In the days after supporters of President Donald Trump gathered in Washington, D.C. to protest the certification of the 2020 presidential election results by Congress and ultimately storm the U.S. Capitol, an image of two vendors selling Trump gear near the scene began circulating on social media.

Text accompanying the image claims that the photos two subjects were not actually supporters of Trump, but instead were overcharging the presidents fans. The photo, however, has been miscaptioned.

Many posts included the following caption: Vendors who would identify themselves only as Nah and Stop asking me questions before you get your ass kicked sell merchandise near the Capitol. I aint into any of this shit, said Nah. But these stupid motherfuckers buying $100 sweatshirts are putting me through college.

The claim appears to have originated in a Jan. 8 satirical article published on the Medium page LEVEL . Labeled FAKE NEWS, the articles headline reads, We Added Some Details to Getty Photos of Those Terrorists Who Stormed the U.S. Capitol. The image of the vendors, along with the previously quoted caption, is the fifth one down the page.

The original photo, visible here: here , was taken by Jon Cherry, a stringer for Getty Images, on Jan. 6, 2021. Getty does not identify the vendors, nor does it suggest that they said anything negative about Trump or his supporters.

The benefit to selling political merch is that politicians are in a unique position as far as branding and exposure, so if youre using a campaign slogan like MAGA its less likely that the trademark enforcers will come after you than if youre using a private companys trademarked phrase, like Disney .

You can also sell political merch anonymously. There are no requirements where you have to publicly disclose your real name or other personal information outside of Etsy and Shopify billing and registration. How To Sell Political Merchandise And Make Money Every Election Season

E-Commerce·Etsy··Side Hustles

Every election season since I was a kid, Ive wanted to be one of the people selling wacky political merchandise. Up until a few years ago, I always thought that selling political shirts was something that would require a big upfront investment into tools like a screen printer, blank products, and shipping materials. That limiting belief went out the window the moment I discovered print-on-demand, the business model that made me more money over the last two election seasons than I made at my last full-time job. Heres everything you need to know about selling political merch online.

What Trump Merchandise Sales Say About The 2024 Election

This time last year, Donald J. Trump was still president, and entrepreneurs across the country were making money selling T-shirts, hats, coffee mugs and other merchandise associated with the Make America Great Again brand.

Trump is no longer president, but the Trump merch? Its still going strong.

From gun shows to state fairs, the traveling booths and retail shops that proliferated during the 2020 campaign are still cheerily promoting the 45th president, even in the face of vandalism, prank calls and protests. And their wares have expanded to include slogans once used by Democrats.

T-shirts that show the face of Trump with the words Miss me yet? replicate ones that featured the face of Barack Obama four years ago. Hoodies that say Biden is Not My President and signs that proclaim Dont Blame Me, I Voted for Trump are selling well, even in the blue states of New England.

Keith Lambert, owner of a Rhode Island-based novelty business, operated 22 retail stores that sold Trump merchandise in the months leading up to the election. Hes now scaled down to 3, in part because demand lessened after the election and hes struggled to find staff to keep the shops open. But hes found that the demand for MAGA-themed merchandise exists outside of an election cycle.

Similarly, retail Trump shops in other parts of the country, including Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, are still operating and profitable.

A Dearth Of Biden Merch

Todd L. Belt, director of the political management program at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., told the Deseret News in 2019 that hes never seen any other type of political merchandise take off the way Trumps MAGA hats did. The expansion of Trump merchandise to the point where retails shops are profitable can be explained, in part, by what Belt called the performance of identity.

Showing other people which side youre on has become more magnified lately. And thats part of the hyperpartisan landscape were in, he said.

But on social media, people have noticed that there seems to be no equivalent business opportunity for Democrats or liberals.

Biden merchandise is available on the online White House gift shop and is made by private sellers at online shops like Zazzle and Etsy, but there are no traveling Biden shops at least none that are getting any publicity. A Google search for Biden pop-up shop yields a for a table in Tennessee where people were selling Biden buttons, signs and bumperstickers. Eleven people had responded to the post.

That said, the popularity of Trump merchandise doesnt necessarily correspond with electoral college votes.

Last year, Boyts said, a local reporter asked him who he thought would win the election. I said I bet every dollar that Trump will win because I dont get calls from people wanting to buy Joe Biden stuff. You would have thought … but thats not how it played out.

Print-on-demand is a process that allows you to sell printed merch like apparel, posters, mugs, and home goods in your own shop. Instead of printing and shipping everything yourself, you partner with a POD company like , which you can automatically sync to your online store. Whenever a customer places an order, you pay for the base price of the product on Printful, then they process and ship the order to your customer with your own unique branding. You can start an entire business without ever touching a single piece of inventory.

There are lots of different POD suppliers out there and many ways to sell POD merch online, but my favorite pairing and the one I recommend for beginners is to start an Etsy shop with Printful as your supplier. Etsy has a built-in audience of millions of shoppers, so thats a huge advantage when youre just starting out.

Trump Plans To Avoid Subpoenas By Invoking A Privilege He Doesn’t Have

Online-store platform Shopify has removed all of President Donald Trump’s campaign merchandise from its platform, saying those web pages violated the Canadian company’s policy against sellers promoting violence.

Both Trump merchandise websites trumpstore.com and shop.donaldjtrump.com were disabled Thursday. Soon after, Shopify said in a statement that it “does not tolerate actions that incite violence.”

“Based on recent events, we have determined that the actions by President Donald J. Trump violate our Acceptable Use Policy, which prohibits promotion or support of organizations, platforms or people that threaten or condone violence to further a cause,” said Shopify, which had been hosting Trump’s store.

The removal comes one day after violent protests at the U.S. Capitol, where supporters of President Trump breached the building while lawmakers were trying to tally Electoral College votes and certify the results of the November election won by Joe Biden. Four people died soon after the event.

Trump Cries Foul On Unofficial Campaign Gear Sellers

For at least three presidential election cycles, savvy Internet marketers have cashed in on the public’s hunger for campaign paraphernalia emblazoned with their favorite candidate’s name, likeness and slogan. These sales channels operate independently of the actual campaigns, meaning the candidates’ coffers don’t see any money from these sales.

But this year, Donald Trump’s organization is sending cease-and-desist letters to such online marketing outfits, warning them that use of Trump’s name, likeness and trademarked slogan — “Make America Great Again” — are illegal infringements on Trump’s trademark rights.

The Trump slogan is most often associated with President Ronald Reagan’s “Let’s Make America Great Again.”

In a copy of one of the cease-and-desist letters obtained by CBS MoneyWatch, Alan Garten, general counsel for the Trump Organization, accused CafePress, a California-based Internet marketing firm, of cyberpiracy and trademark infringement. Garten took CafePress to task for using www.makeamericagreatagain.com as a way to direct Web traffic to its site, where dozens of Trump-related items are for sale, ranging from iPhone covers and Trump 2016 hats.

A quick bit of websurfing produced several other sources for unofficial Trump gear, including on Amazon . A call to Amazon wasn’t returned. Garten declined to identify other cease-and-desist targets, but he confirmed several got the letters.

Selling Trump Gear In North Falmouth Im Just Trying To Support My Daughter

NORTH FALMOUTH The red tie is too short and the body much too thin, but the blow up doll on Route 28A outside of the plaza that contains the North Falmouth Post Office is unmistakably President Trump.

The doll is next to a pop-up shop selling Trump gear that recently appeared on the lawn between the plaza and the road.

The person selling the goods, who only gave a first name, is actually not a Trump supporter.

He is part of is a second economy in American elections that shows up on Cape Cod from time to time, and this is one of those times.

The first time we saw this was when we met a professional petition gatherer in Bourne.

Then last summer, when Pete Buttigieg came to Provincetown, we ran into a guy selling Mayor Pete T-shirts, who asked me if w could tell him how to get to Cape Cod. At first, we thought he was joking, but he had no idea that Provincetown was part of Cape Cod.

Neither the guy, nor his partner, had any real interest in politics or Mayor Pete. They were merely selling T-shirts.

At least this salesman, born and raised in Mashpee, knows where Cape Cod is. He is a part-time landscaper who also works in booths at carnivals and such selling wares. As for the Trump booth, he said, Im just trying to support my daughter.

Cape Cod Wave Magazine reached out to the owner of the plaza at 634 North Falmouth Highway, Clive Gummow, but our call was not returned.

Donald Trump Jr Slammed For Selling Shirts Mocking Alec Baldwin ‘rust’ Set Shooting

Amazon.com: President Donald Trump 2020 I Smell Snowflakes ...

Donald Trump Jr. is facing backlash on social media after selling a shirt that mocks Alec Baldwin over the fatal shooting that occurred on the set of his movie Rust.

A few days after the incident, Trump Jr. began selling shirts that say guns dont kill people, Alec Baldwin kills people, on his website for $27.99.

Last week, Baldwin was handed a prop gun, which he thought was safe to use. However, when he fired the weapon, it fatally struck cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza.

On Monday, Don Jr. began trending on Twitter with users slamming the son of the former president for poking fun at the fatal shooting.

Don Jr. using the tragedy on the film set to get in a dig at Alec Baldwin is why that family should never be in office. Someone lost their life, and dude just wants to use it for a personal vendetta, one post read.

Another user suggested Trump Jr. decided to sell the shirts because he was bitter about Baldwins portrayal of his father on the NBC comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live.

The Radical Right & idiot Don Jr. are going after #AlecBaldwin for the accidental shooting! They are still furious over Baldwins impersonation of #Trump on #SNL that made him appear like a big buffoon! Nothing is going to happen to #Baldwin! But #TFG should be locked up forever! read the tweet.

A source told People that Baldwin is canceling other projects following the tragedy on the Rust set.
