Presidential State Wins By Trifecta Type In 2020 And 2016

Jan. 6 committee votes to subpoena Trump

Biden won three states Donald Trump won in 2016 that have divided governments. Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania all went to Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020. All three states have Democratic governors and Republican majorities in both chambers of the state legislature. All three states previously had Republican trifectas Michigan’s and Wisconsin’s were broken in the 2018 elections, while Pennsylvania’s was broken in the 2014 election.

Joe Biden won four states with divided government that Hillary Clinton also won in 2016: Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Vermont. In Minnesota, Democrats control the governorship and a majority in the state House while Republicans have a majority in the state Senate. The other three states have Republican governors and Democratic state legislatures.

Trump won five divided government states that he also won in 2016: Alaska, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, and North Carolina. Except for Alaska, these states all gained divided trifecta status after electing Democratic governors. Louisiana elected a Democratic governor in 2015, followed by North Carolina in 2016, Kansas in 2018, and Kentucky in 2019.

Below are tables showing state trifecta information for Democratic trifecta, Republican trifecta, and divided government states organized by 2020 presidential result.

This combination of pictures created on October 22, 2020 shows US President Donald Trump and Democratic Presidential candidate and former US Vice President Joe Biden during the final presidential debate at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenness

OAKLAND, Calif. – To win the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump or Joe Biden needs to secure 270 votes in the Electoral College.

Each candidate has a different path to victory. As always, there are battleground states where the matchup between the incumbent and challenger is too close to call. For Trump, Pennsylvania and Florida are seen as the most important swing states. Biden is looking to win Wisconsin and Michigan, two states that Hillary Clinton lost in 2016. The former vice president also appears competitive in Georgia and Arizona, which have reliably voted for Republican candidates.

Below is an interactive Electoral College map followed by a list of election results from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Donald Trump Says All The States That Voted For Him Had No Election Fraud

Former President Donald Trump has said that there was no election fraud in states that he won during the 2020 presidential election.

Trump made his comment during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity broadcast from Mar-a-Lago on Monday night. Hannity asked Trump his thoughts about Georgia’s recently passed voting law, which has been criticized by Democrats as racist and anti-democratic.

“Florida, Ohio, all of the states that we won, were properly run,” Trump said, claiming that all red states in the 2020 election had “properly run” their elections with enough safeguards against fraud.

“Look, Florida was properly run. Ohio was properly run. South Carolina was properly run. By the way, North Carolina, Democratic governor, we won that. You know, that’s always very tough to win. We won it very nicelyproperly run. Happened to have a Democrat governor, in all fairness,” Trump continued.

Months before the 2020 election, Trump claimed that he would only lose if massive fraud altered the vote. Trump lost the 2020 election by over 7 million popular votes and 74 electoral votes.

Ever since, Trump and his supporters have claimed that he lost due to an unprecedented national conspiracy of voter fraud that occurred in the states that didn’t vote for him.

Trump didn’t publicly acknowledge that he’d be leaving office until his January 7 statement.

Newsweek contacted Trump’s office for comment.

Kennedy Edges Out Nixon

In a very close election, John F. Kennedy edged out Richard Nixon by a mere 112,827 votes. Though Nixon won more states , Kennedy triumphed in Electoral College votes . This was, in part, a result of political strategy: Nixon campaigned in all 50 states, while Kennedy focused on swing states.

This election also featured the first televised debate, in which Nixons famously waxy, sweating face likely docked him public support.

Republican Voters On Their Preferred Candidate For President

If the Republican 2024 presidential primary were held today, who would you vote for if the candidates were:

Donald

Asked of 350 respondents who said they planned to vote in the 2024 Republican primary in a New York Times/Siena College poll from July 5-7, 2022. Respondents who answered someone else or did not offer a response are not shown.

The greatest threat to usurp Mr. Trump within the party is Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who was the second choice with 25 percent and the only other contender with double-digit support. Among primary voters, Mr. DeSantis was the top choice of younger Republicans, those with a college degree and those who said they voted for President Biden in 2020.

While about one-fourth of Republicans said they didnt know enough to have an opinion about Mr. DeSantis, he was well-liked by those who did. Among those who voted for Mr. Trump in 2020, 44 percent said they had a very favorable opinion of Mr. DeSantis similar to the 46 percent who said the same about Mr. Trump.

Should Mr. DeSantis and Mr. Trump face off in a primary, the poll suggested that support from Fox News could prove crucial: Mr. Trump held a 62 percent to 26 percent advantage over Mr. DeSantis among Fox News viewers, while the gap between the two Floridians was 16 points closer among Republicans who mainly receive their news from another source.

Mr. Trumps troubles inside his party leave him hamstrung in a matchup against an unusually vulnerable incumbent.

House committee investigating Jan. 6 riots votes to subpoena former President Trump

Bowers faces Trump-endorsed candidate David Fansworth in an Aug. 2 primary that makes Bowers the first Republican to face voters after testifying before the Jan. 6 committee.

Ive had people walk up and say, you know, just cold turkey, Im ashamed of you,’ he told Karl.

Bowers says hes also been called a traitor and has been told that the price of treason is hanging.

In his June testimony, Bowers detailed several conversations with former President Trump and his then-personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, asking him to replace Arizonas electors with ones who would say Trump won the 2020 election.

Biden won Arizona in 2020 by almost 11,000 votes.

Did you ever consider going along with it? Karl asked Bowers.

I said, this is new to me. The idea of throwing out the election of the president is like, okay, so what part of Jupiter do I get to land on and colonize? Bowers said.

Giuliani never provided any evidence to back up claims that thousands of dead people voted in Arizona, Bowers said.

You asked for evidence of fraud? asked Karl.

Over and over, and he said, yes, yes. And he never gave us anything. No names, no data, nothing.

Bowers, who is term-limited in the state house, previously said it would take a miracle for him to win his bid for state senate. He told Karl the demographics of my race are heavily Trump.

In an unusual move for a state legislature race, former President Trump has campaigned against Bowers in Arizona.

New 2020 Voter Data: How Biden Won How Trump Kept The Race Close And What It Tells Us About The Future

As we saw in 2016 and again in 2020, traditional survey research is finding it harder than it once was to assess presidential elections accurately. Pre-election polls systemically misjudge who is likely to vote, and exit polls conducted as voters leave the voting booths get it wrong as well.

Now, using a massive sample of validated voters whose participation has been independently verified, the Pew Research Center has . It helps us understand how Joe Biden was able to accomplish what Hillary Clinton did notand why President Trump came closer to getting reelected than the pre-election surveys had predicted.

How Joe Biden won

Five main factors account for Bidens success.

  • The Biden campaign reunited the Democratic Party. Compared to 2016, he raised the share of moderate and conservative Democrats who voted for the Democratic nominee by 6 points, from 85 to 91%, while increasing the Democratic share of liberal Democrats from 94 to 98%. And he received the support of 85% of Democrats who had defected to 3rd party and independent candidates in 2016.
  • How Trump kept it close

Despite non-stop controversy about his policies and personal conduct, President Trump managed to raise his share of the popular vote from 46% in 2016 to 47% in 2020. His core coalition held together, and he made a few new friends.

    Longer-term prospects

The 2020 Electoral College Total Is The Inverse Of The 2016 Results

Biden’s 306 electoral votes and Trump’s 232 electoral votes are the exact inverse of the 2016 presidential election, when Trump received 306 electoral votes to 232 electoral votes for Clinton.

The final 2016 presidential map reflects 304 electoral votes for Trump and 227 electoral votes for Clinton because both candidates lost two and five electoral votes, respectively, due to faithless electors.

Faithless electors are members of the Electoral College who vote against the state or district’s popular vote winner. For Clinton, there were four faithless electors in Washington State and one faithless elector in Hawaii, while Trump had two faithless electors in Texas. Before 2016, the last time that there were any faithless electors was the 2004 presidential election between then-President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.

This year, members of the Electoral College, who have already been picked by the states and Washington DC, will meet on December 14 to cast their votes for the winner of each state or district.

Attempts To Delay Or Deny Election Results

Republican reactions to Donald Trump’s claims of 2020 election fraudTexas v. Pennsylvaniaamicus curiae

In November, Trump focused his efforts on trying to delay vote certifications at the county and state level. On December 2, Trump posted a 46-minute video to his social media in which he repeated his baseless claims that the election was “rigged” and fraudulent and called for either the state legislatures or the courts to overturn the results of the election and allow him to stay in office. He continued to apply pressure to elected Republicans in Michigan, Georgia, and Pennsylvania in an unprecedented attempt to overturn the election result. Some commentators have characterized Trump’s actions as an attempted coup d’état or self-coup.

On December 15, the day after the electoral college vote, Republican Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell, who was previously among those who would not recognize the election results, publicly accepted Biden’s win, saying, “Today, I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden.”

In a December 21 news conference, outgoing Attorney General William Barr disavowed several actions reportedly being considered by Trump, including seizing voting machines, appointing a special counsel to investigate voter fraud, and appointing one to investigate Hunter Biden.

The 2020 Election By The Numbers

    Full US election results

Its almost over. Yesterday Electoral College electors convened virtually or in person in state capitals across the country to cast their votes. The result was what everyone expected, the election of Joe Biden as president of the United States. With the election now essentially settledRepublican lawmakers may make one last doomed attempt to reverse the results when Congress meets on January 6 to confirm the Electoral College voteheres one last review of how the vote went.

    The Electoral College

In 2016, seven electors declined to vote for the candidate they were pledged to. That was the highest number of faithless electors ever, with the exception of the election of 1872. That year sixty-three electors broke their pledge. They had a good reason to do so, however. They were pledged to Democratic candidate Horace Greeleyhe of Go West fame. Greeley died three weeks after losing to Ulysses S. Grant and before the Electoral College met. His pledged electors were understandably reluctant to vote for a dead man. Three electors, however, did cast their votes for Greeley.

Nixon Wins And Wallace Takes Five States

In a hectic election year one following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., race riots, and Vietnam War protests Richard Nixon promised to restore law and order to the country.

Though Nixon won the popular vote by less than 1 percent, he easily took the Electoral College, 301 votes to 191.

For the first time, many minorities particularly across the South were enfranchised, following the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The perceived threat of minorities gaining power contributed to George Wallaces third-party dominance in the Deep South.

Gender Gap: Voting Choices In Presidential Elections

A gender gap in voting refers to a difference between the percentage of women and the percentage of men voting for a given candidate, generally the winning candidate. Even when women and men favor the same candidate, they may do so by different margins, resulting in a gender gap. In every presidential election since 1980, a gender gap has been apparent, with a greater proportion of women than men preferring the Democrat in each case. The magnitude of the gender gap has ranged in size from four to twelve points since 1980. The womens vote is the percentage point advantage that one candidate has over the other among women voters- that is, the difference in support for the major party candidates among women voters only.

In every presidential election since 1996, a majority of women have preferred the Democratic candidate. Moreover, women and men have favored different candidates in presidential elections since 2000, with the exception of 2008 when men were almost equally divided in their preferences for Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain. In 2020, a majority of women favored the Democratic victor, Joe Biden, while a majority of men voted for the Republican candidate, Donald Trump.

Clinton Wins Again With Similar Results

During the previous 1994 midterm election, Clinton has lost Democratic control of both the House and Senate, and his chances of winning were forecast as slim.

How The Final 2020 Electoral College Map Compares To 2016

    • In the 2020 US presidential election, President-elect Joe Biden earned 306 electoral votes to 232 electoral votes for President Donald Trump.
    • This year, Biden flipped five states and one congressional district that Trump won 2016, giving him the majority in both the Electoral College and the popular vote.
    • Biden won the traditionally Republican states of Arizona and Georgia, neither of which had voted for a Democratic presidential nominee since the 1990s.

On November 14, the final puzzle piece of the 2020 presidential map was set.

Once President-elect Joe Biden was declared the winner in Georgia, based on a projection by Decision Desk HQ and Insider, the final Electoral College tally in the presidential election stood at 306 electoral votes for Biden and 232 electoral votes for President Donald Trump. Biden is well over the 270 electoral vote threshold needed to secure the presidency.

As of November 18, Biden leads in the national popular vote by a 51% to 47% margin, or by 4 percentage points. So far, Biden has earned 79,271,864 votes, compared to Trump’s 73,464,544 votes, with outstanding ballots still being counted in several states, including California and New York.

Biden’s raw vote lead is currently just under 6 million votes.

While the 2016 presidential map reflects Democratic dominance on the East and West coasts and Republican strength across the interior of the country, the 2020 map shows how Biden made significant inroads in every region of the country.
