TALLAHASSEE Floridas presidential election wrapped up will little fanfare Monday after the states 29 Republican electors cast their votes for President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
Meeting in the Senate chambers in the Capitol, the 29 GOP lawmakers, donors and current and former party officials spent an hour casting their electoral college votes. Despite winning Florida, Trump lost the overall presidential race to former Vice President Joe Biden and his running mate, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris.
Gov. Ron DeSantis, with his 4-year-old daughter Madison in his lap, watched as the electors signed their choices for President and Vice President, which were then counted by staffers and the results announced.
Let the record reflect Donald J. Trump received 29 electoral votes for president of the United States, Secretary of State Laurel Lee said, to mild applause.
The states GOP electors included Lt. Gov. Jeanette Núñez, new Florida House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, future Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, and Republican Party Chairman Joe Gruters, a senator from Sarasota.
Lee, the states top elections official who was appointed by DeSantis, presided over Mondays count and repeated assurances that Floridas 2020 election was safe and fair.
The coronavirus tests forced one of the 29 electors, Senate President Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, to drop out after he tested positive for the coronavirus Sunday night.

In Jacksonville – Florida’s most populous city and a right-leaning battleground – Clinton outperformed every Democratic presidential candidate since former President Jimmy Carter in 1976. She lost Duval County by about 6,000, according to unofficial and incomplete vote tallies.

“It’s probably the biggest upset since Truman in 1948. Just no one expected it,” said Matthew Corrigan, a University of North Florida political science professor who helped the Associated Press call the Florida results.
Trump’s top three gains over Mitt Romney’s results – in suburban Pasco, Pinellas and Volusia – were enough to vault him over Barack Obama’s Florida margin in 2012.
Not this time.
Pinellas County, which includes St. Petersburg, gave Obama 25,846 more votes than Romney in 2012. It gave Trump 5,777 more votes than Clinton on Tuesday.

Donald Trump has won the state of Florida a second time, providing him 29 critically needed electoral votes in the largest of the swing states, according to the Associated Press.
The Trump campaign sought an essential victory in Florida by courting Latino voters and invoking red-scare visions of Joe Biden, whose wins in crucial counties fell significantly shorter than Hillary Clintons in 2016.
Polls predicted a tight race in the state the former vice president was roughly 400,000 votes behind the president by the time the AP called its results.
Nine million Florida voters voted early, with more than 4.7 million of those votes from returned mail-in ballots returned and more than 4.3 million from in-person early voting. Republicans outnumbered Democrats during in-person early voting by roughly 500,000 votes, but Democrats returned 2.1 million mail-in ballots to Republicans 1.4 million.

President Donald Trump won Florida for the second time early Wednesday morning, garnering a key victory bolstered by a strong showing in Miami-Dade County in a state that his opponent Joe Biden had hoped to secure.
The Associated Press, CNN and NBC News were among news organizations declaring Trumps victory in the Sunshine State.
Trump had 51.26% of the votes to Bidens 47.84% with 99% of precincts reporting.
Trump was buoyed by big gains in Miami-Dade, where Biden won by about 7 percentage points in a county that Hillary Clinton took in 2016 by 29 points. Trump did extremely well in Cuban American districts, seemingly consolidating a usually solid Republican demographic that had been soft for him in 2016.
The Miami-Dade margins ate away at some major gains Biden made elsewhere in the state, including a historic victory in Seminole County.

The Republican incumbent faced a primary of his own in Florida on Tuesday, though GOP opponent Bill Weld didnt make much of a showing.
With four Republicans on the ballot, almost 99.82% of the vote in statewide, Trump was leading with 93.8% of the vote. Weld, a former Massachusetts Governor, had just 3.17%. Former Congressman Joe Walsh, who has dropped out, won 2.05%, while perennial candidate Rocky de la Fuente had 0.98%. Trump will get all of Floridas 122 delegates in the winner-takes-all contest he would have taken them under Democrats proportional allocation system as well. The win technically clinched the Republican nomination for the President.
Moreover, Trump had more than 1.16 million votes cast in the essentially noncompetitive primary.
Compare that to former Vice President Joe Biden, who easily won the Florida Democratic primary over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. With the same percentage of the vote tabulated, Biden was just over 1.07 million, about 100,000 votes less than Trump.
Of course, the dynamics of the primary were very different. Sanders is still running an active campaign, though many wonder if tonight delivered a final blow to his candidacy.
