Signs Of The Times: Months After The Election Yard Signs Still Causing A Ruckus
Tom Eaton typically deals with complaints about overgrown lawns, garbage in a back yard or a misplaced fence.
Eaton is the part-time zoning administrator in the northern Minnesota city of Baudette, and hes started an uproar in town after ordering residents to remove their political signs and flags.
This sign issue was nowhere on my radar, he said. I never in my wildest dreams thought wed be fighting over a sign ordinance.
Months after the end of the 2020 election, disputes over campaign signs are still causing a ruckus in several Minnesota communities, including Baudette. Protests over orders to remove yard signs has some cities reconsidering their statutes.
State law says yard signs cant be restricted 46 days before and 10 days after an election. But outside of that period, local governments can limit the size and number of signs. The ordinances are mainly about aesthetics: to prevent neighborhoods from being littered with old, tattered signs.
The Baudette ordinance states that campaign signs must be removed 10 days after the election.
After receiving a few complaints, Eaton sent warning letters to 28 people, all with Trump signs or flags in the town of about 1,000 people. Five refused to comply, including Mayor Rick Rone who has a Trump flag on his house.
I took the signs out of my yard by the deadline, Rone said. But I have a flag on my porch thats been there for almost a year probably.
But Eaton said he believes the mayor has put him in a bad spot.

Pa Sen Scott Wagner: Im Buying 20000 Trump Lawn Signs
While some Republicans in the state fret about their association with Donald Trump even skipping the Republican National Convention altogether to avoid affiliation-by-osmosis PA Sen. Scott Wagner is working overtime to boost for the billionaire businessman-turned-presidential nominee.
Im going to purchase 20,000 Trump lawn signs anyone who wants a Trump sign in my district is going to get one, he said, speaking from his delegate spot at the RNC, in Cleveland. Im going to make sure the base is energized. Pennsylvania is a crucial state this year.
Wagner is a businessman who successfully ran for his seat in the 28th District as a write-in candidate two years ago with a pro-business, Tea Party-esque platform. His district, encompassing most of York County, is a sweet spot for Trumps key white working class demographic, and Wagner has been eying a run against Gov. Tom Wolfs in 2018.
Prominent state GOP members, like US Sen. Pat Toomey, have waffled on their support for Trump, fearing that being associated with his racist rhetoric will damage their own future election hopes. But the state senator has been a prominent support and said hed even been flown out to strategize with Trumps national campaign team and PA operatives.
The state senator had choice words for his hesitant colleagues.
Wagner said hed pay for the lawn signs with his own campaign funds, but didnt know offhand how much they would cost.

Ever since President Donald Trumps 2016 campaign rooted itself in a theme of America First, critics have called attention to the businessmans own eponymous products that were being made outside the U.S. such as Trump shirts made in Bangladesh and sports coats made in India.
But are his 2020 reelection campaign banners, or flags, being made in China? Thats the question a dozen readers have asked us in recent weeks, in the midst of news coverage on the topic and subsequent criticism by Sen. Bernie Sanders, who cited one such report.
Sanders wrote in a : Given the choice between hiring American workers at a living wage or hiring much less expensive workers from China that he can exploit, Trump opts for the low-cost overseas labor day in and day out.
In early July, however, the owner of a flag-making factory in Chinas Zhejiang province told the NPR podcast The Indicator that he was filling an order for Trump reelection flags.

BROWNSBURG, Ind. Donald Trumps re-election campaign has demanded that Rep. Todd Rokita take down yard signs it says give the false impression the president endorsed the Indiana Republicans Senate bid, two people with direct knowledge of the matter told The Associated Press.
The rebuke came after two volunteers who led Trumps bare-bones 2016 campaign in Indiana endorsed Rokita during an Indianapolis news conference last week.
The Rokita signs, which have gone up since that event, proclaim in large white letters Endorsed by Trump/Pence, with smaller letters below adding 2016 Indiana Team Leaders.
Rokita spokesman Nathan Brand refused to say if the campaign will comply with the Trump campaigns request.
We do not comment on yard sign strategy, Brand said in a statement that reiterated the endorsement by the two volunteers.
Tony Samuel, one of the volunteers who endorsed Rokita, told the AP that the Trump campaign texted him Monday night to voice displeasure over the signage.
Trumps re-election campaign is concerned the signs imply an endorsement that has not been made, a campaign official told the AP. The campaign also asked that Rokitas campaign certify in writing once the signs have been taken down, the other person with direct knowledge of the matter said.

A black-and-white American flag with one blue stripe, also known as a thin blue line flag, was displayed behind the stage of President Donald Trumps rally at Waukesha County Airport, Wisconsin on Oct. 24. Some users on social media are claiming this flag, used as a symbol of solidarity for the police by some but holding a racist subtext for others, was displayed instead of the American flag. This is inaccurate: footage of the scene shows both flags were present at the rally.

Most iterations of the claim feature a screenshot of a tweet here by Jeff Sharlet, professor of English at Dartmouth College , that features a photograph of the stage of the rally and reads: Tonight in Wisconsin. First the anti-Black Lives Matter flag flew outside his rallies, then beside the American flag. Now it has replaced the American flag. Thats significant.
