What happened in Charlottesville didn’t start with Donald Trump.
It didn’t start with David Duke either, but there’s a long, durable thread from Duke to Trump that’s worth thinking about.
Despite his dubious Twitter profile claim to be “one of 100 most read and quoted people in the world,” Duke may be an obscure character to many people these days.
But his dying fame has flickered back to life in the Trump era, and there he was on Saturday in Virginia, in the thick of the white nationalist protesters, talking to the media.
“This represents a turning point for the people of this country,” he said, shortly before the protest turned violent. “We are determined to take our country back, we’re going to fulfill the promises of Donald Trump, and that’s what we believed in, that’s why we voted for Donald Trump.”
Duke is 67, older than his surgically rejuvenated face and his beefcake Twitter photo suggest, no longer the jaunty young Hitler wannabe I first met at a Mardi Gras parade in 1989.
On that long-ago Tuesday, Duke was in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans, campaigning for a seat in the state legislature. Metairie was almost entirely white, filled with people who fled New Orleans when the schools were integrated. I was covering the South for the Tribune.
A few days later, Duke won the race. That story about the former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard who had been a Republican for only a few weeks ran on page one.

This reference says Elizabeth Trump & Son had been formed by the time he was 18 . This reference is a newspaper of the day announcing a date of incorporation of 1927, when Fred was 22. It’s worth noting that Trump’s comments came one day after another Klan brawl, this time in Anaheim, Calif. Thirteen people were arrested and three were stabbed after a Klan rally turned violent. And it’s worth noting, too, as did Jonathan Chait at New York magazine, that Trump’s claim to know nothing about white supremacists echoes the language of the 19th-century Know Nothing party a nativist group that supported only Protestants for public office.

On both the criminal and civil litigation fronts, former President Donald Trump faces a bevy of lawsuits and investigations, with more cases likely to follow. Some are civil suits stemming from his pre-presidential business dealings. Others are defamation claims from women he allegedly assaulted. More still are criminal probes and civil actions that scrutinize his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The Chart below tracks all these cases. It will be continually updated as major legal developments occur.
These cases bear on two pressing questions. First, will Trump maintain his long streak of eluding legal liability in the face of so many lawsuits? Second, if Trump is held to account for illegal conduct, what impact will such a development have on hisand his familyspolitical and business fortunes?
The civil cases could certainly do their fair share of damage as well, directly or indirectly. If Trump falters in one of his business-related suits, his companies may be subject to massive penalties, orworse. Even apart from such sanctions, his empire is reportedly struggling under looming debt obligations and reduced revenues, a slump which could worsen if his reputation continues to deteriorate.

Case Summary: In the run-up to Trumps 2017 swearing-in, his inaugural committeeraised a record $107 million to spend on inauguration festivities. As a nonprofit, the inaugural committee was bound to use these charitable funds for the public good, namely by organizing events to celebrate the 2017 presidential inauguration.
But as the DC AGalleges, the inaugural committee used over $1 million of those funds in an improper bid to enrich the Trump familys private businesses. DCs attorneys are nowsuing the inaugural committee, the Trump International Hotel, and the Trump Organization over that alleged misspending. Chief among the allegations, the DC AG claims that the committee paid exorbitant rates to rent space in the Trump International Hotel in downtown DC. The committee, for instance, allegedly paid $175,000 to rent the main ballroom on the same day that another nonprofit paid only $5,000a rate 35 times higher. On top of that, the committee allegedly ignored much better deals available at other upscale locations, settling instead on overpaying for space at the Trump location.

Numerous posts to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have resurrected a claim that the presidents father was arrested during a 1927 Ku Klux Klan rally that turned violent in Queens, New York. The accusation first surfaced during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Recent posts began appearing amid nationwide protests spawned by the death of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer on May 25. The claim about Trumps father gained traction after Utah Republican U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney a frequent target of Trumps ire posted a photo of his father, former Michigan Gov. George Romney, participating in a civil rights march in Detroit in the 1960s.

Case Summary: On Feb. 16, 2021, Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson sued former President Trump and Rudy Giuliani along with two right-wing militia groups known as the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, for violating the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, 42 U.S.C. § 1985. Case Summary: In 2019, Carroll publicly accused then-President Trump of sexually assaulting her in a New York City department store in the 1990s. A few hours later, Trump denied Carrolls allegation and accused her of fabricating the story to drum up publicity for her upcoming book. Carroll then sued Trump for defamation in New York state court, alleging that Trump defamed her when he publicly accused her of falsifying the assault story.
After nearly a year of state court proceedingsand with Carrolls counsel angling to sample Trumps DNAthe Justice Department moved to intervene on Trumps behalf under the Federal Tort Claims Act . This move threatened to quash the suit. In effect, the FTCA provides blanket immunity to federal employees who commit certain tortsincluding defamationarising out of their official duties. The Senate has acquitted former President Trump for his role in the January 6 capitol riots. But his legal problems are far from over. There are currently a number of ongoing federal and state investigations by local and state officials.
The first civil lawsuit that named the former president was filed by Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Mississippi, and the NAACP in federal District Court for the District of Colombia. The suit alleges that Trump, Giuliani, and the Proud Boys group used “harassment, intimidation, and threats” to stop the certification of the election results, in violation of the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871.
The suit specifically asserts that the extremist groups and the former President incited the riots “for the purpose of contesting the announced results of the presidential election held in November 2020 and preventing the duly elected president and vice president from attaining approval of Congress of their election necessary to their inauguration.”
