Trump Begs Supporters To Donate For Upcoming Lawsuit Against Cnn

Its been over a week since former President Donald Trump pledged that he would be filing a lawsuit against CNN.

Yet, instead of court documents being filed, Trump appears to be more preoccupied with begging followers to send in money to support the so far non-existent legal action.

Im calling on my best and most dedicated supporters to add their names to stand with me in my impending LAWSUIT against Fake News CNN, a new fundraising email sent out from the ex-president on Friday said.

Add your name IMMEDIATELY to show your support for my upcoming lawsuit against Fake News CNN, the message declared, linking to a donations page.

That email titled Lets SUE CNN was one of two CNN-inspired fundraising emails sent out on Friday.

A second email sent out hours later struck a similar urgent tune and said: Im going to look over the names of the first 45 Patriots who added their names to publicly stand with their President AGAINST CNN.

Last Wednesday, the former president threatened to sue the cable network and sent CNNs General Counsel David Vigilante and top CNN executive Chris Licht a letter titled, Notice of Intent to Bring Civil Action for Defamation.

Without regard for President Trumps genuine belief in his statements, CNN has published numerous articles characterizing him as a liar and the purveyor of the Big Lie, the Trump legal letter to CNN said.

Neither CNN nor a Trump spokesperson returned The Daily Beasts request for comment on Friday evening.

The stunning revelation made clear the gravity of the Justice Departments inquiry months after the National Archives and Records Administration said it had discovered classified information in documents Mr. Trump had held onto after leaving office.

What he doesnt have the right to do is possess the documents they are not his, Jason R. Baron, a former director of litigation at the National Archives for more than a decade, said. There should be no presidential records at Mar-a-Lago, whether they are classified or unclassified or subject to executive privilege or subject to attorney-client privilege.

Documents covered by executive privilege are meant to be kept within the government.

Trump Tried To Contact A Jan 6 Committee Witness Liz Cheney Says

Senior Editor, Breaking News, HuffPost

Rep. Liz Cheney said former President Donald Trump attempted to contact a Jan. 6 committee witness.

During a hearing Tuesday, Cheney said the witness, who has not yet appeared publicly, did not answer a call from Trump and informed their attorney about the attempted contact.

The committee turned over information about the attempted contact to the Department of Justice, Cheney said.

Jan. 6 select committee Vice Chair Liz Cheney says Trump tried to call a witness in the committee’s investigation after the committee’s last hearing. The witness did not answer or respond, and the committee has supplied the information to the Department of Justice.

JM Rieger

Cheney said Trump called the witness after the last hearing, during which Cassidy Hutchinson, a former assistant to Donald Trumps chief of staff Mark Meadows, made a series of bombshell claims about the former presidents actions on Jan. 6.

Cheney did not name the witness.

Let me say one more time: We will take any effort to influence witness testimony very seriously, Cheney said.

At a hearing in June, Cheney suggested some of the committees witnesses had not testified as fully and forthrightly as others due to interference from people close to Trump, citing two statements from witnesses.

Legal experts told HuffPost that messages to witnesses could constitute obstruction of justice or tampering with a witness in an official proceeding, HuffPosts Arthur Delaney reported.

Several News Organizations Asked Court To Unseal Information Leading To Fbi Search Warrant For Mar

Obama’s handwritten letter to President Trump revealed

The U.S. Justice Department on Monday rebuffed efforts to make public the affidavit supporting the search warrant for former president Donald Trump’s estate in Florida, saying the investigation “implicates highly classified material” and the document contains sensitive information about witnesses.

The government’s opposition came in response to court filings by several news organizations, including The Associated Press, seeking to unseal the underlying affidavit the Justice Department submitted when it asked for the warrant to search Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate earlier this month.

Trump, in a Truth Social post early Tuesday, called for the release of the unredacted affidavit in the interest of transparency.

The court filing from Juan Antonio Gonzalez, the U.S. attorney in Miami, and Jay Bratt, a top Justice Department national security official argues that making the affidavit public would “cause significant and irreparable damage to this ongoing criminal investigation.”

The document, the prosecutors say, details “highly sensitive information about witnesses,” including people who have been interviewed by the government, and contains confidential grand jury information.

The government told a federal magistrate judge that prosecutors believe some additional records, including the cover sheet for the warrant and the government’s request to seal the documents, should now be made public.

Republicans Are Desperate To Keep Trump From Announcing For President Before The Midterms

Republican leaders are trying to send a not-so-subtle signal to Donald Trump these days: Do NOT announce for president before the November midterm elections.

Yeah, I think wed like to just kind of keep the accelerator down and push hard into November, Sen. John Thune, the second-ranking Republican in the chamber, said Monday. I think weve got, you know, the issues set and everything the political landscapes, environments favorable. And I think the fewer disruptions obviously, the better, but, you know, I dont have any control over what he may or may not do or when he may do it.

The message is clear: Dont screw this up for us.

Thunes warning comes amid increasing signs that Trump is itching to announce a third candidacy and to do so before the midterms.

CNNs Gabby Orr reported this earlier this month:

Trump has told associates he is eager to launch another presidential campaign as early as this month to capitalize on President Joe Bidens increasingly dismal poll numbers and put his potential GOP rivals on notice. One GOP source familiar with those conversations was told that Trump was considering announcing as soon as the first week of July, while others in his orbit cautioned that he does not currently have the infrastructure in place for a major campaign announcement and doesnt want this to be a dud, as a person close to Trump described it.

Trumps Shifting Explanations Follow A Familiar Playbook

WASHINGTON First he said that he was working and cooperating with government agents who he claimed had inappropriately entered his home. Then, when the government revealed that the F.B.I., during its search, had recovered nearly a dozen sets of documents that were marked classified, he suggested the agents had planted evidence.

Finally, his aides claimed he had a standing order to declassify documents that left the Oval Office for his residence, and that some of the material was protected by attorney-client and executive privilege.

Those are the ever-shifting explanations that former President Donald J. Trump and his aides have given regarding what F.B.I. agents found last week in a search of his residence at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla.

Mr. Trump and his allies have cast the search as a partisan assault while amplifying conflicting arguments about the handling of sensitive documents and failing to answer a question at the center of the federal investigation: Why was he keeping documents, some still marked classified, at an unsecured Florida resort when officials had sought for a year to retrieve them?

Trump Tells Team He Needs To Be President Again To Save Himself From Criminal Probes

When Donald Trump formally declares his 2024 candidacy, he wont just be running for another term in the White House. Hell be running away from legal troubles, possible criminal charges, and even the specter of prison time.

In recent months, Trump has made clear to associates that the legal protections of occupying the Oval Office are front-of-mind for him, four people with knowledge of the situation tell Rolling Stone.

    More from Rolling Stone

Trump has spoken about how when you are the president of the United States, it is tough for politically motivated prosecutors to get to you, says one of the sources, who has discussed the issue with Trump this summer. He says when he is president again, a new Republican administration will put a stop to the investigation that he views as the Biden administration working to hit him with criminal charges or even put him and his people in prison.

Presidential immunity and picking his own attorney general arent Trumps only reasons for running again. And as he works on another run, Trump is in a tug-of-war with leaders and operatives of his own party about when to announce, according to multiple people with knowledge of the matter.
