How To Tweet Donald Trump

What This Means For Content Moderation

Twitter flags Donald Trump’s tweet, Twitter says post ‘Glorified Violence’

The bursty pattern presents difficulties for content moderation policies and enforcement. First, this pattern creates a whack-a-mole dynamic in which harmful speech targeting a figure may appear in bursts, only to recede. And while Twitter estimates that 51% of tweets that violate the platforms terms of service are automatically caught by its machine learning systems, this leaves 49% to be detected by human content moderators. Given the scale of the platform, this can amount to thousands if not millions of unflagged harmful tweets targeting an individual or group. Second, research suggests that women and people of color who are public figures are especially likely to be targeted by harmful speech. So while levels of harmful speech might return to an equilibrium after an initial spike, this does not undo the harm experienced by the recipients of the toxic and threatening speech, as well as others who were exposed to it.

While Trump poses especially difficult challenges for platform content moderation, he is far from alone in inspiring harmful speech among his followers. The norms around online political speech that Trump has helped establish are likely to stay with us for the foreseeable future, as will questions about how to best balance the public interest in not censoring elite speech while promoting healthier discourse online.

Social Media Use By Donald Trump

This article is part of a series about

Donald Trump‘s use of social media attracted attention worldwide since he joined in May 2009. Over nearly twelve years, Trump tweeted around 57,000 times, including about 8,000 times during the 2016 election campaign and over 25,000 times during his presidency. White House said that the tweets should be considered official statements. When Twitter permanently banned Trump from the platform in January 2021 during the final days of his term, his handle @realDonaldTrump had over 88.9 million followers.

For most of Trump’s presidency, his account on Twitter, where he often posted controversial and false statements, remained unmoderated in the name of “public interest”. An investigation by The New York Times published November 2, 2019, found that, during his time in office, Trump retweeted at least 145 accounts that “have pushed conspiracy or fringe content, including more than two dozen that have since been suspended.” On July 16, 2019, the House of Representatives voted mostly along party lines to censure him for “racist comments” he had tweeted two days previously. Trump also spread misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic.

In May 2021, Trump launched “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump”, a site where he posted short tweet-like announcements it was shut down after less than a month amidst reports that it had failed to attract significant traffic.

Former Us President Donald Trump Is Claiming Executive Privilege To Stop Former Aides Giving Evidence To Congress

US Capitol Riot: Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in January.

Donald Trump is suing to block the release of White House records related to the January 6 insurrection that he was impeached for inciting, according to court documents released Monday.

The former president is claiming “executive privilege” to stop former aides giving evidence to Congress, in an escalation of his efforts to stonewall investigators looking into the deadly Capitol assault.

The challenge will likely touch off an extended high-stakes showdown in the courts that will test the constitutional authority of Congress to scrutinize the executive branch.

Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol nine months ago in an effort to overturn President Joe Biden’s election victory.

They had been egged on by Trump, whose fiery speech earlier that day falsely claiming election fraud was the culmination of months of baseless claims about a contest he lost fairly to Biden.

“The committee’s request amounts to nothing less than a vexatious, illegal fishing expedition openly endorsed by Biden and designed to unconstitutionally investigate President Trump and his administration,” says the lawsuit filed in Washington’s district court.

Congressional investigators are seeking testimony from officials who could speak to what Trump, who is considering running for a second term in 2024, knew about the attack beforehand, and what he did while it was ongoing.

How The Storming Of The Capitol Unfolded

Additionally, Twitter said his second tweet on Friday “may also serve as encouragement to those potentially considering violent acts that the inauguration would be a ‘safe’ target”.

Mr Trump has no plans to attend Mr Biden’s inauguration, making him the first president in more than 150 years – and just the fourth in US history – to miss the occasion.

Twitter initially suspended Mr Trump’s account for 12 hours on Wednesday after he posted a video that repeated false claims about election fraud and praised the rioters who stormed the Capitol.

Five people were killed in the violence, including police officer Brian Sicknick, who was seriously hurt “while physically engaging with protesters”.

Meanwhile, Twitter said plans for future armed protests have already begun “proliferating on and off” the platform, including a proposed secondary attack on the Capitol on 17 January.

Earlier, they permanently banned two Trump loyalists – former national security adviser Michael Flynn and attorney Sidney Powell.

It was part of a broader purge of accounts promoting the QAnon conspiracy theory, whose supporters made up a large portion of the rioters.

The company also said Trump attorney Lin Wood was permanently suspended on Tuesday for violating its rules, but provided no additional details.

Twitter permanently suspended President Donald Trumps account on Friday, citing the risk of further incitement of violence.

The presidents account, with 88 million followers, was initially banned for 12 hours on Wednesday due to severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy, after he used the platform to condemn Vice President Mike Pence as his supporters stormed the Capitol.

Almost immediately, the account that Trump had used for years to convey his every thought, to denounce his enemies and praise his friends, to convey uncountable false statements and official White House announcements, simply disappeared. It was suddenly impossible to see his previous tweets, or even to see his reaction to Twitter’s decision. Instead, his empty account had been marked: “Account suspended.”

Trump’s attempts to tweet from associated accounts also were blocked. At one point, he was tweeting from his campaign account, but that was promptly suspended.

In a blog post, Twitter detailed the reasoning behind the decision.

In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action, Twitter wrote. Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.

Twitter Hides Trump Tweet For ‘glorifying Violence’

7 Outrageous (And Insulting) Donald Trump Tweets

Twitter has hidden a tweet by President Donald Trump from his profile, saying it violates rules about glorifying violence.

It did the same hours later when the official White House account tweeted a copy of the president’s words.

Instead of being deleted, both tweets can be viewed by clicking on a prominent warning.

It says that “Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain accessible.”

This is the latest twist in an escalating row between Twitter and the White House.

The US president finds himself in unexpected company alongside other world leaders whose tweets have been censored.

In February 2019, Twitter had a tweet by Iranian Leader Supreme Ayatollah Ali Khamenei removed after it appeared to threaten author Salman Rushdie.

Also last year, several accounts associated with Cuban President Raul Castro and members of his government were suspended, citing policy violations.

Mr Trump was tweeting about the US city of Minneapolis, which has seen consecutive nights of protests following the death of a black man in police custody.

The president said he would “send in the National Guard”, and followed that up with a warning that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

That second tweet was hidden by Twitter for “glorifying violence”.

“This pours rocket fuel over the online-harm-versus-free-speech debate. Online content policy doesn’t get more incendiary than this.”

    , without any warning attached.
