Donald Trump was a manifestation of the problems in US society. Some sort of Trump would have happened, even if this one had not come along. His legacy will be a testament to this.
Donald Trump did not think he was going to win the election against Hillary Clinton back in 2016.
Many around him acknowledged his candidacy was a brand-building marketing ploy, further moving up the stock value of his celebrity status, helping him to build another level on to his debt-laced real estate house of cards.
Trump had gone bankrupt a number of times but had always worked out deals that largely kept him whole, giving him lavish spending allowances, as long as he continued to be the flamboyant, attention-drawing, playboy mogul that is Donald Trump.
He had become the human punctuation point of too big to fail. To his financiers, the real estate became peripheral they were backstopping a brand, and that brand his family name is what Trump thought he was elevating even if he lost to what he characterised as the corrupt and cheating Clinton political machine.
But then he won.
Maybe it was Russian interference that moved at least 73,000 votes in the right places to tilt the electoral college Trumps way. Or perhaps it was Cambridge Analytica interfering with Facebook.
Maybe it was Clinton not realising how damaging her image as a maven of the super-rich Southampton set was compared with her early days as a struggling social justice advocate in Little Rock, Arkansas.
How Big Are Donald Trump’s Legal Problems
He may have been out of power for over a year, but legal issues related to his time in office still present some risk to former President Donald Trump.
The most serious cases include two criminal investigations: one into possible election interference and another into alleged financial crimes.
Meanwhile, a political inquiry is considering recommending criminal charges over Mr Trump’s role in the storming of Congress on 6 January, 2021.
As Mr Trump contemplates a 2024 presidential rerun, here are the legal cases which may threaten those ambitions.
That Must Be Everything Right
Not quite. A long list of other investigations and potential lawsuits includes:
⢠The Washington DC attorney general’s criminal investigation into the 6 January attack. Last year he said Mr Trump could possibly be charged for encouraging the violence but no action has been taken
⢠A lawsuit by the same DC attorney general, who has accused Mr Trump of misusing funds for his 2017 inauguration. The trial is expected to begin later this year
⢠Various lawsuits by police officers who have accused Mr Trump of inciting the 6 January attack in which they suffered injuries
⢠A lawsuit by Mr Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, who says her uncle and his siblings allegedly cheated her out of inheritance. Trump has sought to dismiss the lawsuit, which was filed in a state court in New York City
⢠A lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court by Mr Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, who alleges his old boss sent him back to prison in retaliation for writing a tell-all memoir

Former President Donald Trump criticized NATO when asked about Russia’s “evil” actions in Ukraine.
In an interview with the former president on Wednesday, Fox News host Sean Hannity asked him about “war crimes and atrocities” being committed by Russia “from Bucha to .”
“We have mass graves. We have innocent civilians being slaughtered in the streets. We have entire neighborhoods leveled,” Hannity said. “Do you believe this is evil in our time?”
Trump avoided directly answering the question and instead criticized NATO.
“I think in 100 years, people are going to look back, and they’re going to say how did we stand back, and NATO stand back, which in many ways I’ve called a paper tiger,” Trump said.

The former president claimed he “rebuilt NATO” and criticized member states at length for not spending as much as the US.
During his time in office, Trump repeatedly threatened to withdraw from the alliance and pressured other member states to increase defense spending.
In the interview with Fox, Trump also repeated his claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if he was still president.

The Dilemma For Parents
Given what we know about Donald Trump, whats the difficulty here for parents?
Most kids see the President of the United States as the consummate role model. When asked, many would say they would like to be president when they grow up. Why? Because it is a position that warrants authority, respect, power, and admiration. It is one person everyone looks up to.
Parents should be worried as their kids watch Trump day after day modeling quite the opposite behavior they hope for in their kids. And many do worry that their kids will imitate this behavior, or rationalize their misbehavior saying, Hey President Trump did that! Why cant I?
Beyond imitation, parents need to be able to talk with their kids about Donald Trumps behavior. And, if so, many would feel caught between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, if they condemn the President, they need to be careful, particularly for kids like Charlie, as they may be viewed as defying authority. On the other hand, if they say he is the President and the rules do not apply to him , then they have to justify behavior that is reprehensible.
So, were stuck.
But we do need to have conversations about this with our kids. We need to talk with them at a developmental level they can understand, with our young children and our older teenagers.
And most of all, we cannot allow them to watch our President violating the civilized norms we try to teach our children without engaging them with commentary and dialogue.

Why Do Conspiracy Theories Relate To The Trump Presidency
Donald Trumps political career was in part launched by promoting a conspiracy theorythat Barack Obama was not born in the United States. Throughout his term in office, Trump continued to embrace conspiracy theories, from claiming that Barack Obama had ordered FBI surveillance of the Trump campaign to refusing to disavow QAnon, the belief that a cabal of pedophiles is working to undermine the president. Conspiracy theories have generally been relegated to select corners of the Internet, but Trump has amplified them through the power of the presidencylending dangerous claims a wider reach and greater credibility.
Anyone can fall down the rabbit hole of a conspiracy theory. Yet conspiracy thinking is correlated with certain personality traits, including low levels of trust, an increased need for closure, and feelings of powerlessness, low self-esteem, and paranoid thinking. Conspiracy theories also proliferate during times of crisis, which characterizes the last year of the Trump presidency, from the COVID-19 pandemic to the economic recession and racial reckoning.

Trump, unfiltered and raw is what the nation is seeing as he departs his office, but certainly not the political scene. The powerful in both parties are yet again dismayed and alarmed by Trump having instigated the first assault on the US Capitol in two centuries and his overt attempt to overturn an election that he, in an Orwellian twist, had convinced his followers was being stolen from him.
Trump is a master at the Big Lie, yelling fire when he himself started it calling out fraud in the 2020 election when he was the one trying to get many leading Republicans in Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania and even his own vice president, Mike Pence, to commit election fraud on his behalf. He accused the Democrats of propagating a swamp of swindlers and cheats in Washington, whereas the criminal indictments, prosecutions and convictions of his campaign team and his White House staff are unmatched by any US president in 150 years.
But it is too easy, and also incorrect, to suggest his followers were blind to these elements of Trumps character. It is too much of a short cut to write an epitaph for his presidency that Trump lied, distorted, self-dealt, kowtowed to Russia, alienated allies, created a huge jump in national debt, made the rich richer and, perhaps most defining, completely bungled a credible response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Former Vice President Mike Pence on Friday offered his most forceful rebuke of Donald J. Trump, saying the former president is wrong that Mr. Pence had the legal authority to change the results of the 2020 election and that the Republican Party must accept the outcome and look toward the future.
Speaking to a gathering of conservatives near Orlando, Fla., the former vice president said he understands the disappointment so many feel about the last election but repudiated Mr. Trumps false claims that Mr. Pence could reject the Electoral College results and alter the outcome last year.
President Trump is wrong, said Mr. Pence, in his remarks before the Federalist Society, a conservative legal organization. I had no right to overturn the election.
