Twitter has permanently suspended President Trump’s account over a pattern of behavior that violated company rules.

The action was the most sweeping punishment any major social media company has ever taken against Trump, who has used his Twitter account to announce White House policy, attack rivals and widely disseminate misinformation.

For years, Twitter has been under pressure from critics to limit the reach of Trump’s falsehood-laced tweets. Calls for Trump to be banned from Twitter have also been long mounting.

Yet officials at Twitter stood by his account, since the platform generally gives wide berth to accounts from world leaders whose posts have public value.

That all changed following the violent riots that overtook the Capitol earlier this week after a deluge of posts attempting to sabotage the result of the presidential election.

“After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” the company said in a statement.

Why Twitter Pulled The Plug

Twitter Added a Fact

Trump first was banned temporarily by both Facebook and Twitter on Jan. 6 in the midst of a riot where his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol as lawmakers proceeded with the formality of counting Electoral College votes. Many lawmakers and even former members of Trump’s administration criticized Trump for encouraging his supporters to reject the election results and protest at the Capitol. Congress later reaffirmed Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.

As the riot unfolded, Trump tweeted messages encouraging nonviolence, though he later released a video message that also reiterated his unsubstantiated claim that the election was stolen from him and told rioters, “We love you.”

Twitter initially blocked some of Trump’s tweets from public view on Wednesday and required he delete them to regain access to his account. After the deletion, he was locked out of the account for another 12 hours. But, Twitter warned, future policy violations would result in permanent suspension of Trump’s account.

In his on Jan. 7, Trump posted a video message urging calm and giving the closest thing to a concession speech yet, saying there would be a transition to a new administration. Still, he told supporters, “Our incredible journey is only just beginning.”

Later, Trump tweeted, “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.”

Twitter determined those tweets violated its Glorification of Violence Policy, prompting the ban.

Twitter Permanently Suspends President Donald Trump

Twitter permanently suspended President Donald Trumps account on Friday, citing the risk of further incitement of violence.

The presidents account, with 88 million followers, was initially banned for 12 hours on Wednesday due to severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy, after he used the platform to condemn Vice President Mike Pence as his supporters stormed the Capitol.

Almost immediately, the account that Trump had used for years to convey his every thought, to denounce his enemies and praise his friends, to convey uncountable false statements and official White House announcements, simply disappeared. It was suddenly impossible to see his previous tweets, or even to see his reaction to Twitter’s decision. Instead, his empty account had been marked: “Account suspended.”

Trump’s attempts to tweet from associated accounts also were blocked. At one point, he was tweeting from his campaign account, but that was promptly suspended.

In a blog post, Twitter detailed the reasoning behind the decision.

In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action, Twitter wrote. Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.

    Tweets As Official Statements

Trump Vs Social Media: Twitter Labels Donald Trump’s Tweet As ‘Manipulated Media’

Throughout his presidency, Trump frequently appeared to issue orders through his tweets. Whether these tweets were official directives was unclear. A US National Archives spokesman said that Trump’s tweets are considered presidential records.

In 2017, the Department of Justice argued in one court case that Trump’s tweets were “official statements of the President of the United States.” In another cases, the DOJ argued they were official policy statements but that the tweets were also “personal conduct that is not an exercise of state power.” The ABA Journal wrote in 2017, “There’s little caselaw on to what extent government use of social media can be considered official or a ‘public forum,’ which affords First Amendment protection to people who might be excluded based on their viewpoints.”

In 2019, the Secretary of the U.S. Navy said he did not interpret a Trump tweet as a “formal order to act” after Trump tweeted that the Navy should not take away Chief Petty Officer Edward Gallagher‘s status as a Navy SEAL.

In 2020, a court asked that Trump clarify his intention after he tweeted what appeared to be an order calling for the disclosure of documents related to Russian interference in the 2016 election. In a court filing White House Chief of Staff said that: “The President indicated to me that his statements on Twitter were not self-executing declassification orders and do not require the declassification or release of any particular documents.”

Focus On Feelings And Shout A Lot

Trump is master when it comes to using his speech in order to stir up a mass. But he does it very intelligently. In all his Tweets , I found that he used the words thank about 500 times this phrase ends up in his Top 10 most used expressions. Is he very grateful towards others? Yes, sounds like it. But when we look closer, we see that for almost every Tweet, that contains a gratitude, he finds a way to pivot the message towards himself.

Another strategy of mister Trump is to write as of youre in a pub and youre chatting with your mates. The most effective way of reaching an audience is to SHOUT your message the loudest people rule the world . This technique is very smart and he applies it in about 60% of his Tweets, even more if you take out the Tweets he retweets. He loves to use an exclamation mark! A rule of thumb if you want to be successful on Twitter is to be as unpolished in your writing as possible.

Social Media Use By Donald Trump

This article is part of a series about

Donald Trump‘s use of social media attracted attention worldwide since he joined in May 2009. Over nearly twelve years, Trump tweeted around 57,000 times, including about 8,000 times during the 2016 election campaign and over 25,000 times during his presidency. White House said that the tweets should be considered official statements. When Twitter permanently banned Trump from the platform in January 2021 during the final days of his term, his handle @realDonaldTrump had over 88.9 million followers.

For most of Trump’s presidency, his account on Twitter, where he often posted controversial and false statements, remained unmoderated in the name of “public interest”. An investigation by The New York Times published November 2, 2019, found that, during his time in office, Trump retweeted at least 145 accounts that “have pushed conspiracy or fringe content, including more than two dozen that have since been suspended.” On July 16, 2019, the House of Representatives voted mostly along party lines to censure him for “racist comments” he had tweeted two days previously. Trump also spread misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic.

In May 2021, Trump launched “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump”, a site where he posted short tweet-like announcements it was shut down after less than a month amidst reports that it had failed to attract significant traffic.

    Add Sentiment To Your Message

    Donald Trump: Utah Is a

One of the things Donald Trump has mastered on Twitter is emotional framing in his messages. I did a quick sentiment analysis with Textblob, a lightweight Python library for text processing, and I found that almost half of his Tweets are filled with emotion. The majority of these Tweets are critical, or negative in tone. You dont have to be a linguist to see how Trump creates this framework of sentiment around his messages. He almost always concludes his Tweets with two or three, often all in uppercase, words that set the tone of his message. What Trump does on Twitter has more resemblances with speech than with actual writing. Thats his main secret.
