Republican Rep Peter Meijer said he had no regrets about voting to impeach former President Donald Trump days after he was defeated for re-nomination in his congressional primary in Michigan.

I would rather lose office with my character intact than stay reelected having made sacrifices of the soul, Mr Meijer said on the Sirius XM programme .

Trump Attempted To Call White House Support Staff Member In Talks With Jan 6 Panel Source Says

Former President Donald Trump tried to call a member of the White House support staff who was talking to the House committee investigating the Capitol insurrection, a source familiar told NBC news Wednesday.

CNN first reported that the witness works at the White House.

The committee’s vice chair, Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., asserted Tuesday that Trump tried to call a witness involved in the committee’s investigation but did not identify the individual.

She described the recipient of Trump’s attempted call as someone “you have not yet seen in these hearings.”

“That person declined to answer or respond to President Trump’s call, and instead alerted their lawyer to the call. Their lawyer alerted us,” Cheney said.

The panel alerted the Department of Justice, she added.

Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich on Tuesday, when asked to comment on the alleged call, instead pointed to one of his tweets earlier that day criticizing Cheney, the committee and the media.

The committee’s chair, Rep. Bennie Thompson, told reporters earlier Wednesday that the Justice Department would determine whether there was any illegal conduct.

Fresh From Furore Over Nazi Speech Viktor Orban Welcomed At Cpac In Dallas

Thursday 4 August 2022 22:30 , Oliver O’Connell

A little over a week ago, Hungarys prime minister delivered a speech about immigration in which he declared that Europeans do not want to become peoples of mixed-race.

The comments by Viktor Orban, the 59-year-old far-right leader, prompted outrage in his own country and across Europe for their explicit racism, and led to the resignation of his close adviser of 20 years, who described the speech as pure Nazi text.

But Mr Orbans use of white supremacist rhetoric did little to dampen the enthusiasm of American conservatives for his visit to the United States this week.

Trump Modern Nero Watched The Capitol Sacked From A White House Dining Room

Trump never asked the FBI or the national guard to protect Congress. He rebuffed entreaties to end the crisis. Thats because he liked what he saw

Thursday nights congressional hearing on the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol lived up to its billing as a season finale. A modern-day Nero, Trump watched reports of the invasion of the Capitol on Fox News from the comfort of his private White House dining room. The commander-in-chief ignored repeated calls to end the mayhem.

The mob was his people. Trump never reached out to the military, the FBI, the defense department or the national guard to intervene. He rebuffed entreaties from Ivanka Trump, Mark Meadows and Pat Cipollone to end the downwardly spiraling situation.

Trump never walked to the press briefing room to say enough. He liked what he saw. His minions had taken matters into their own hands and brought Congress to a halt.

Trump struggled to record a message to disperse to his fans. He loved them they were special. We heard this before. There were good people on both sides in Charlottesville.

Chillingly, the security detail assigned to the vice-president began to say good-bye to their families. If Mike Pence came to hang from makeshift gallows that was his problem. Trump thought he deserved it. Pence was his vice-president, he believed with loyalty to him, not the US constitution. He was expendable.

Carnage and destruction were OK. The ends justified all means.

A Jan 6 Link At The Alex Jones Trial

President Trump delivers ‘farewell address’ from White House in recorded video

Thursday 4 August 2022 16:21 , Andrew Naughtie

InfoWars shock jock and far-right agitator Alex Jones is in court facing a defamation lawsuit from the parents of a child killed at Sandy Hook but his case has taken on a wider significance thanks to an error by his attorney, who accidentally shared a digital copy of Mr Joness phone that included every text message he sent and received in the last two years.

The news from the courtroom today is that the texts include intimate messages to Trump confidante and Republican machinator Roger Stone and that the plaintiffs legal team intend to turn them over to law enforcement and the Jan 6 select committee, possibly as soon as today.

Bankston just referred to Jones’ “intimate messages to Roger Stone,” which first, ew, and secondly, I think I hear the January 6 committee having a party from here

Trump Tried To Contact Member Of White House Staff About Jan 6 Testimony Source Says

The person who former President Donald Trump allegedly tried to contact who was referenced by the House Jan. 6 committee is a member of the White House staff, a source close to the committee investigation told CBS News.

The person did not take the call and then contacted their attorney, who contacted the House Jan. 6 committee, committee vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney said Tuesday.

The call came soon after Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top aide to Trump White House chief of staff, testified at the June 28 public hearing, the committee said. Hutchinson’s bombshell testimony included that Trump wanted to join the crowd going to the Capitol on Jan. 6 and that the former president threw his lunch against the wall in Dec. 2020 after then-Attorney General Bill Barr gave an interview to the Associated Press saying there was no widespread evidence of voter fraud.

The person Trump contacted was potentially prepared to corroborate parts of Hutchinson’s blockbuster testimony, the source said.

This is not the first time the Jan. 6 committee has alleged there has been potential witness tampering. At the June 28 public hearing, Cheney said some of the witnesses who have appeared before the committee have received messages from some inner members of Trump’s circle. She read some of the texts, including one that said “he wants me to let you know he’s thinking about you. He knows you’re loyal.”

Emails Reveal New Details Of Trump White House Interference In Cdc Covid Planning

The documents released by a congressional committee lay out a timeline for how the Trump White House began to downplay the dangers posed by Covid-19.

New emails and documents released by a congressional committee investigating the Trump administrations handling of the pandemic show the extent to which top White House officials interfered in the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions efforts to warn Americans about Covid-19.

The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis has conducted interviews over the last several months about how former President Donald Trump and his closest confidantes, including former White House adviser Scott Atlas and son-in-law Jared Kushner, tried to steer the course of the federal response, sidestepping the interagency process.

On Friday, the committee released emails and transcripts with former senior CDC officials about the White Houses attempts to sideline the agency at critical moments at the beginning of the U.S. outbreak.

The emails and transcripts detail how in the early days of 2020 Trump and his allies in the White House blocked media briefings and interviews with CDC officials, attempted to alter public safety guidance normally cleared by the agency and instructed agency officials to destroy evidence that might be construed as political interference.

The CDC did not respond to a request for comment.

Redfield eventually signed the order despite Cetrons opposition.

Dispatch: Why Is Mitch Mcconnell Lowering Expectations For The Midterms

Thursday 4 August 2022 16:15 , Andrew Naughtie

Writing for The Independents Inside Washington newsletter, Eric Garcia examines why Mitch McConnell is trying to damp down any expectation that his party will take control of the Senate in November:

In critical Senate races across the country, Republican candidates are struggling to pull away from their opponents, or even polling well behind them. Among the standouts are Herschel Walker in Georgia, JD Vance in Ohio and Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania. All three were endorsed in their primaries by Donald Trump, who either cleared the field for them or gave their campaigns a much-needed boost. But each of them have come with serious baggage.

On Tuesday, another Trump-backed candidate, venture capitalist Blake Masters, won the Republican primary to challenge Senator Mark Kelly in Arizona. Masters has repeated many of Trumps lies about the election being stolen and has a history of making racist remarks. An endorsement from the founder of a neo-Nazi website did not do anything for his image.

White House Lawyers Subpoenaed By Jan 6 Probe Grand Jury

7 takeaways from President Trump

04:45 , Oliver O’Connell

A federal grand jury investigating efforts to undo the results of the 2020 presidential election has subpoenaed the White House counsel under then-President Donald Trump and his top deputy, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The subpoenas to Pat Cipollone and Patrick Philbin suggest an intensifying Justice Department investigation into the events surrounding the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, when Trump loyalists stormed the building in hopes of halting the certification of election results. They also suggest that prosecutors regard close advisers to Trump as potentially vital witnesses.

Did John Kelly Eavesdrop On Donald Trump

Thursday 4 August 2022 15:45 , Andrew Naughtie

Donald Trump reportedly issued an order banning White House advisers from listening to his telephone conversations after he was informed that his second chief of staff, John Kelly, had done so during his tenure as the then-presidents top aide.

According to the New York Post, Jared Kushner writes in his upcoming memoir Breaking History that Mr Trump was unaware that the former Marine Corps general-turned-White House chief of staff was listening to his phone calls a standard practice in previous administrations until after he replaced Mr Kelly in late 2018.

The Post also reported that Mr Kushner, who was a senior adviser in Mr Trumps White House and is also his son-in-law, reveals how Mr Kellys replacement, ex-South Carolina congressman turned Office of Management and Budget boss Mick Mulvaney, informed Mr Trump that Mr Kelly had listened in on his calls just before his last day.

Wisconsin: Michels Goes After Kleefisch In Governors Race

02:45 , Oliver O’Connell

Tim Michels is on the attack in the waning days of Wisconsins tight GOP governors primary, with an ad this week faulting his rival for not initially backing Donald Trump in 2016 even as it emerged Thursday that Michels himself did not vote in that primary.

Michels launched the attack ad against Rebecca Kleefisch days after he said that running negative ads is just bad policy and that politicians who do it are losing.

The ad faults Kleefisch for not endorsing Trump in the 2016 primary and brands her the ultimate Madison insider. Kleefisch, who is backed by former Vice President Mike Pence, is a former two-term lieutenant governor. Michels co-owns the states largest construction company, Michels Corp.
