Were Running Out Of Time To Hold Donald Trump Accountable

Trumps indictment and conviction is overdue. The midterms will be a battle between his acolytes and supporters of fair elections

On Friday, Trump endorsed JD Vance in the Ohio Senate Republican primary. This follows his endorsement of Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvanias Senate Republican primary and Herschel Walker in the Georgia Senate race.

The media has framed these endorsements as long-shot bets that could put desired image as a kingmaker at risk. But this misses the point. Whats really at stake for Trump is the selling of Trump and his big lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

To get a strong endorsement from Trump, a candidate apparently must fulfill three prerequisites run in a swing state whose primaries and general election will attract lots of media attention, be totally committed to Trump and his big lie, and be capable of promoting Trump and his lie with the kind of celebrity pizzaz that sells well on television.

Vance celebrity author of Hillbilly Elegy was originally appalled by Trump and his lie, and said so. But now that hes running for the Senate, Vance has become one of the most forceful promoters of Trump and his lie. As Trump noted about Vance, he gets it now.

Walker fits the criteria, as well. He was both a college and NFL star.

Second, the lynchpin of democracy is the peaceful transition of power from those who lose elections to those who win them.

Elvis Presley Meets Donald Trump In The King Trailer

In his upcoming documentary The King, director Eugene Jarecki tackles a subject that is vast in its scope and bold in its import: the rise and fall of Elvis Presley, not as an event in itself but as a metaphor for America.

And he does so in a crazy way: by getting ahold of a Rolls Royce that Elvis once owned and driving it around the country to places that meant something to Elvis, with a succession of musicians playing music in the back seat while pundits, experts and fans weigh in on what Elvis means to them. And he did it during the presidential election of 2016, inextricably linking the fall of Elvis with the rise of Donald Trump.

When the film premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival under the title Promised Land, TheWrap called it big, bold and overreaching, in love with but also skeptical of its own central metaphor of Elvis career as a version of Americas own history. Its the promise of freedom being choked by capitalism and excess, the poor boy who loses himself in a rich mans life.

Jarecki, whose other films include the Peabody Award-winning Why We Fight and The House I Live In, has since trimmed the movie slightly. The new version under the new name will be released by Oscilloscope in June. The trailer, above, premiered on Tuesday and while it does not include a single image of Donald Trump, the spectre of the America that elected Trump imbues the entire trailer.

Promotion Of Conspiracy Theories

Republicans Have Stockholm Syndrome, and Its Getting Worse

Trump Jr. retweeted conspiratorial remarks by white supremacist Kevin B. MacDonald about alleged favors exchanged by Hillary Clinton and Switzerland’s largest bank. On the campaign trail, Trump Jr. promoted Alex Jones‘ conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton wore an earpiece to a presidential forum and that official unemployment rates were manipulated for political purposes.

In March 2017, Trump Jr. criticized the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, after the 2017 Westminster attack, which in turn led British lawmakers to criticize Trump Jr. British journalists said Trump Jr. had quoted Khan out of context when he criticized him. Khan did not respond to the criticism, saying he had “far more important things” to do.

In May 2017, Trump Jr. promoted what CNN called the “long-debunked, far-right conspiracy theory” that Bill Clinton was linked to Vince Foster’s death. In November, Trump Jr. again promoted the conspiracy theory that the Clintons had murdered people.

In February 2018, Trump Jr. liked two tweets promoting a conspiracy theory that survivors of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting were coached into propagating anti-Trump rhetoric.

In June 2018, Trump Jr. liked a tweet suggesting that the migrant children separated from their parents due to the Trump administration family separation policy were actually actors.

In May 2020, Trump Jr. falsely accused Joe Biden of being a pedophile.

New York Judge Holds Former President Trump In Contempt

NY Attorney General is seeking documents from ex-US President Donald Trump as part of probe into his business practices.

A New York state judge has held former United States President Donald Trump in contempt of court for not producing documents subpoenaed in a state probe of his business practices.

Trump lost a bid to quash a subpoena from New York Attorney General Letitia James then failed to produce all the documents by a court-ordered March 3 deadline, later extended to March 31 at his lawyers request.

Justice Arthur Engoron ruled on Monday that a contempt finding was appropriate because of what he called repeated failures to hand over materials and that it was not clear Trump had conducted a complete search for responsive documents.

Mr. Trump I know you take your business seriously, and I take mine seriously. I hereby hold you in civil contempt, the judge said, although Trump himself was not in the New York state courtroom in Manhattan.

The attorney generals office received zero documents from Trump by the end of March, Andrew Amer, special litigation counsel with Jamess office, said on Monday in arguments before Engoron delivered his ruling.

Donald Trump is not beyond the reach of this courts authority, Amer said in support of the contempt motion. Mr Trump had his day in court challenging the subpoena, and he lost.

After the ruling, James called it a major victory and said justice prevailed.

That Must Be Everything Right

Not quite. A long list of other investigations and potential lawsuits includes:

⢠The Washington DC attorney general’s criminal investigation into the 6 January attack. Last year he said Mr Trump could possibly be charged for encouraging the violence but no action has been taken

⢠A lawsuit by the same DC attorney general, who has accused Mr Trump of misusing funds for his 2017 inauguration. The trial is expected to begin later this year

⢠Various lawsuits by police officers who have accused Mr Trump of inciting the 6 January attack in which they suffered injuries

⢠A lawsuit by Mr Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, who says her uncle and his siblings allegedly cheated her out of inheritance. Trump has sought to dismiss the lawsuit, which was filed in a state court in New York City

⢠A lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court by Mr Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, who alleges his old boss sent him back to prison in retaliation for writing a tell-all memoir

California Takes Another Shot At Getting Ahold Of Trump’s Tax Returns

The California state Assembly is weighing another bill aimed at obtaining President Donald Trumps tax returns, marking the states second attempt to pass such legislation in the last two years.

The bill, which passed its first major hurdle in the state Senate late last week, would require all presidential candidates to submit five years worth of tax returns in order to appear on the states primary ballot in March 2020.

It joins 18 other states in proposing such legislation.

The bill would apply to all candidates but is clearly aimed at Trump, who has long broken with presidential precedent and refused to release his tax returns. Eight of his Democratic challengers have done so, shedding valuable insight on their sources of income and gifts to charity.

As continues to fight the rule of law by not releasing his tax returns, California has the answer: Senate Bill 27. It would mandate all Presidential candidates release 5 years of returns prior to the March 2020 primary election.

Mike McGuire May 6, 2019

President Trumps refusal to release his income tax returns has broken a time honored, bi-partisan tradition which has weakened our democracy and his jaw dropping business conflicts have now put the security of our nation at risk, state Sen. Mike McGuire said in a statement when he introduced the bill in March.

Donald J. Trump has faced a string of legal setbacks as his attempts to halt a New York state civil investigation into his family business were struck down in court, though the future of a criminal inquiry into his business remains uncertain.

Signs that the Manhattan district attorneys criminal inquiry had begun to fall apart started showing in February, when two of the senior prosecutors leading that investigation, which concerns the former presidents business practices, resigned after the district attorney, Alvin Bragg, was said to have expressed doubts about the case.

In early April, Mr. Bragg spoke publicly for the first time about his offices investigation and said it was ongoing, though his remarks did not offer a clearer sense of its direction.

Regardless, Mr. Trump and his family business, the Trump Organization, remain in legal jeopardy.

The following day, Mr. Trumps lawsuit seeking to halt the investigation was also dismissed.

Here is where each notable inquiry now stands.

    Jeb Get Ahold Of Yourself

Jeb Bush has dropped to around 10 percent in polls for the Republican presidential candidates.

Despite what you may have read or watched or come across in a fortune cookie, Donald Trump isnt actually running away with the Republican nomination, and the only thing hes dominating right now is media coverage. Heres some perspective for you: As late as October 2011, a pizza magnate named Herman Cain was leading the Republican field with roughly 30 percent of the vote, or about the same as Trumps zenith in recent polls.

The main difference is that Mitt Romney had locked down the establishment vote in 2011 and was running just a few points behind. Trump, on the other hand, looks like the Big Kahuna mainly because the vast majority of the Republican vote remains divided among more than a dozen serious competitors, none of whom has yet managed to pull away from the pack.

In other words, Trump isnt really winning the presidential contest so much as all the other candidates are losing it. And no one is losing it faster or with more determination than Jeb Bush.

It was a spectacularly bad week for Bush, who has dropped to around 10 percent in both national and New Hampshire polls.

And all of this was playing out while Bushs campaign admitted that some of its top staff was already taking pay cuts in anticipation of a long slog through the winter, which is generally not a sign that things are going according to plan.
