The short answer is that hes presidentand the Senate GOP protected him from any near-term consequences in their sham trial.
But its looking increasingly possible he loses in November. And he may well face prosecution once hes no longer in office.

It was all Joe Bidens fault. It was all Donald Trumps fault. The Democratic Party has gone too far leftor not far enough. Republicans won because of the culture wars and the racist dog whistles. Ah, the blame game. Theres nothing else quite like this particular political ritual when, once every four years, Virginia and New Jersey hold the first major statewide contests following the Presidential election a year earlierand everyone sifts through the results for important national implications, which may or may not exist. A year from now, will we still be debating the bogeyman of critical race theory that some Republicans have decided is the ticket to taking control of Congress? Who knows? But such is todays news cycle. Youngkin ran with it maybe it will work everywhere.

Trumps Future: Nine Possibilities
As former President Donald Trumps second impeachment trial begins, it shines a light on a new reality: although its been nearly 100 days since Trump lost his re-election he is not going away, at least in the short term. What will become of Trump? Here are nine possible outcomes for Trumps futurethe first four possibilities keep him in the middle of national politics in the latter five, he would more likely fade away.
1. Leading the Trumpublican faction of the GOP
Over the course of four years as president, Trump masterfully consolidated Republican voters into a cult of personality. His hardcore supporters were willing to believe anything that left his lips, regardless of evidence to the contrary. They were willing to put their own lives at risk as he huddled them together at rallies and mocked those taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. They were willing to commit insurrection against their own government, all in his name and to support his lies about election malfeasance.
That non-trivial group of Republican and Republican-leaning voters is not going away, and they remain loyal not to the party but to Donald Trump. It remains to be seen exactly how large this group is, how much power they will wield in Republican primaries and whether a non-Trumpublican candidate can consolidate the remainder of the party.

Trump Impeachment Trial: Live Updates
House Democratic managers stressed in their presentation how close a mob of Trump supporters got to Pence, and that some rioters had yelled, “Hang Mike Pence.” Managers’ reconstructed timeline of the events also included Trump’s tweets throughout Jan. 6.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., the lead impeachment manager, was first to respond to Romney’s question. He noted the events of Jan. 6 were broadcast on live television and on the radio, saying Trump had to know that the rioters had already breached the building and were armed with weapons, and that the police were outnumbered.
“Here are the facts that are not in dispute,” Raskin said. “Donald Trump had not taken any measures to send help to the overwhelmed Capitol police. As president, when you see all of this going on and the people around you are imploring you to do something, and your vice president is there, why wouldn’t you do it?”
Raskin also noted remarks by Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, who has told reporters that he spoke to Trump over the phone as the mob began ransacking the Capitol. During their brief conversation, Tuberville said he told the former president that Pence had been evacuated from the chamber moments earlier.
“Sen. Tuberville specifically said that he told the president, ‘Mr. President, they just took the vice president out, I’ve got to go,’ ” Raskin said.
That conversation took place shortly after 2 p.m., Raskin noted.

Ok Then What About Charges On A State Or Local Level
This is where investigations are underway and charges are potentially more likely.
There are already two criminal investigations into Trump happening at the state level.
One of those in Georgia relates to Trump pressuring Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger via a now-infamous phone call to overturn the election results.
New York state is broadening an ongoing investigation of Trump, honing in on allegations of financial crimes in Trump’s many business ventures.
On a local level, there are already dozens of lawsuits in the works, as well as at least two known criminal investigations related to his business dealings.
Trump Lawyer: His Call To Georgia Officials To ‘find’ Votes Was Taken Out Of Context
Trump’s lawyers largely sidestepped Trump’s false claims of election fraud. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., asked during the question-and-answer session: “Are the prosecutors right when they claim that Trump was telling a big lie, or in your judgment did Trump actually win the election?”
Trump lawyer Michael van der Veen shot back, “My judgment? Who asked that?”
“I did,” Sanders replied.
“My judgment is irrelevant,” van der Veen said.
“You represent the president of the United States!” Sanders yelled back before Sen. Patrick Leahy, the presiding officer, gaveled the chamber back to order.
Trump’s rhetoric about widespread fraud and a stolen election was false, dismissed by many courts stemming from dozens of lawsuits filed by the Trump campaign and allies across several key states.

New Concerns Over American Democracy
Throughout his tenure, Donald Trump questioned the legitimacy of democratic institutions, from the free press to the federal judiciary and the electoral process itself. In surveys conducted between 2016 and 2019, more than half of Americans said Trump had little or no respect for the nations democratic institutions and traditions, though these views, too, split sharply along partisan lines.
The 2020 election brought concerns about democracy into much starker relief. Even before the election, Trump had cast doubt on the security of mail-in voting and refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power in the event that he lost. When he did lose, he refused to publicly concede defeat, his campaign and allies filed dozens of unsuccessful lawsuits to challenge the results and Trump personally pressured state government officials to retroactively tilt the outcome in his favor.
Most Americans placed at least some blame on Trump for the riot at the Capitol, including 52% who said he bore a lot of responsibility for it. Again, however, partisans views differed widely: 81% of Democrats said Trump bore a lot of responsibility, compared with just 18% of Republicans.

The comments are particularly telling, given the slew of Trump’s other misogynistic , which range from saying no one would vote for his former rival, Carly Fiorina, because of of her face, joking about dating his own daughter, and punishing women for abortions.
Takeaways From The Trump Impeachment Trial After Defense Wraps Up
Trump’s lawyers, however, did not stick to a narrow constitutional argument. Instead, they accused Democrats of using the impeachment process for partisan gain and of trying to disenfranchise the people who voted for Trump’s reelection. The defense declined to provide evidence of what the president knew about the violence, when he knew it and what he did about it.
The Democratic House impeachment managers argued that the former president, who addressed a rally outside the White House ahead of the insurrection, was “singularly responsible” for the violence on Jan. 6.
They relied, in large measure, on video to prove their case, including never-before-seen Capitol security footage. The videos showed on the Senate floor during what was an, at times, emotional trial brought back the vivid images of the Capitol violence to the very place it happened.

In a similar vein, Larry Bagnell, a Liberal MP for the Yukon reportedly received a fundraising letter from Trump’s campaign, which was promptly deleted by his staff.
Since it’s illegal for foreign nationals to contribute to U.S. elections and for American candidates to solicit funds from foreign nationals, it’s unclear why Trump was contacting Canadians for funds . According to Capital Economics, a Trump victory would be “very bad” for Canada’s economy,” so he probably won’t be receiving much cash from Canadian politicians anytime soon.
