Comedian Michael Ian Black Writes Satirical ‘a Child’s First Book Of Trump’

A Child’s First Book of Trump

If you’re wondering about the man with the wayward flop of yellow hair who is always in the news, comedian Michael Ian Black offers an explanation in a new off-beat book:

“The beasty is called an American Trump

Its skin is bright orange, its figure is plump

Its fur so complex, you might get enveloped.

Its hands are, sadly, underdeveloped.

And where does it live? On flat-screen TVs!

It rushes toward every camera it sees.

It thrives in the most contentious conditions

Connecticut museums and galleries offering exhibits »

And excretes the most appalling emissions.”

Black, the popular comedian and actor, has written “A Child’s First Book of Trump” . The brightly illustrated, satirical book on presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump hits stores Tuesday, July 5.

Despite the title, it’s not really a book for kids. “I think you could read it to your children if they don’t scare easily,” Black said in a phone interview from his home in Redding. “It’s clearly aimed at adults who are finding themselves feeling a little befuddled at the rise of a certain orange beast.”

The book’s release was timed to coincide with the Republican National Convention, which will be held July 18 to 21 in Cleveland. Black will appear at R.J. Julia Booksellers, 768 Boston Post Road in Madison, on July 19 at 7 p.m.

Black said he wrote the book over one weekend. His first draft “was strident and angry,” he said. At his editor’s request he lightened it up a bit and is glad he did.

Striking a semi-Seussian tone, Black explores the “strange beast” that seems to be everywhere these days from its propensity for saying “I’m the best!” to its poop that “spells out Trump’ in ten-foot-high letters!” Black checks off all the key Trump jokes with some pretty clever rhymes , and Rosenthal portrays the “American Trump” as an orange, bean-shaped biomorph with unmistakable pursed lips and an intensely horizontal coif. But the truth is that Black has picked the easiest of targets he assumes a sympathetic readership, but lets them off scot-free by positioning them as victims. What’s more, he gives the worst advice possible when it comes to dealing with a bully: ignore him or run away the final image shows crowds streaming toward the Canadian border.

‘a Child’s First Book Of Trump’ Is Sporadically Funny

I’m guessing that your first question about this timely Trump satire is will it make a good birthday, hostess or thank-you gift for that hard-to-buy-for liberal in your life?

The short answer is yes, in a pinch. Both author Michael Ian Black and illustrator Marc Rosenthal offer flashes of fun in this satirical picture book for adults, and the packaging is top-notch. The cover is at once a skillful evocation of midcentury classics like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and a hilarious swat at The Donald, depicted here as a swollen orange lima bean of a man, posing proudly within the gaudiest of gilt frames.

And then there’s Black’s pitch-perfect dedication: “For the haters and losers.” I’m thinking even Trump would smile at that one.

Sadly, it’s mostly downhill from there, as Black delivers an ode, in rhymed couplets, to a man with all the well-known flaws and foibles:

“The beasty is called an American Trump.

Its skin is bright orange, its figure is plump

Its fur so complex, you might get enveloped.

Its hands are, sadly, underdeveloped.”

A Childs First Book of Trump is aimed at adults, says author, but could be read to children if they dont scare easily

If youre at a loss to explain the phenomenon that is Donald Trump to your children, help may be at hand from A Childs First Book of Trump, published this week.

US comedian and writer Michael Ian Black has written the book, published by Simon and Schuster, and although the 32-page picture book is released under the publishers Books for Young Readers imprint, its more likely to appeal to adults, says the author.

Black, who lives in Connecticut, describes the presumptive Republican presidential candidate thus:

The beasty is called an American TrumpIts skin is bright orange, its figure is plump Its fur so complex, you might get enveloped. Its hands are, sadly, underdeveloped. And where does it live? On flat-screen TVs!It rushes toward every camera it sees.It thrives in the most contentious conditionsAnd excretes the most appalling emissions.

I think you could read it to your children if they dont scare easily, Black told the Hartford Courant. Its clearly aimed at adults who are finding themselves feeling a little befuddled at the rise of a certain orange beast.

But Black admitted that he was asked by his editor to lighten the tone after completing a strident and angry draft in a single weekend.

The result is a Dr Seuss-style rhyming tale which, Black told the Courant, is the perfect medium for describing Trump.

Michael Ian Black Says His Trump Kids Book Was Inspired By Hillary Clinton

Comedian Michael Ian Black has a confession: The title of his forthcoming book, A Childs First Book of Trump, is sort of deliberately misleading. Yes, you can read this satire with your kids, but its not really meant for them. And thats not just because theres a mild obscenity on Page 6. Despite the simple rhymes and whimsical illustrations, the humor here is more John Oliver than Dr. Seuss.

That said, the book does have a Seussical bent to it, says Black, who has written several books legitimately for children and starred in some shows you might not want them to see .

The books main character, American Trump, is vaguely Lorax-like with his orange Humpty Dumpty-size head way out of proportion to his hands topped by a brilliant whoosh of yellow hair. The rhyming text is also a kind of wicked homage to Seuss:

I have all the best words and all the best things!

My water is bottled from all the best springs!

My wine is the best, and so is my brain.

You wanna know why? Too bad! Ill explain.

The book, illustrated by Marc Rosenthal, is Blacks attempt to riff on another childrens book about Trumps Democratic rival. About two months ago, Black was in a bookstore when he saw an earnest, inspirational childrens book about Hillary Clinton.

So what should you do with a Trump running wild?

Reason and logic will only incite it.

Chanda will edit the book agent Barry Goldblatt negotiated the world rights deal for Black, and Holly McGhee of Pippin Properties represented Rosenthal.
