President Donald J. Trump took more than 700 pages of classified documents, including some related to the nations most covert intelligence operations, to his private club and residence in Florida when he left the White House in January 2021, according to a letter that the National Archives sent to his lawyers this year.
The letter, dated May 10 and written by the acting U.S. archivist, Debra Steidel Wall, to one of Mr. Trumps lawyers, Evan Corcoran, described the state of alarm in the Justice Department as officials there began to realize how serious the documents were.
It also suggested that top department prosecutors and members of the intelligence community were delayed in conducting a damage assessment about the documents removal from the White House as Mr. Trumps lawyers tried to argue that some of them might have been protected by executive privilege.
The letter was disclosed on Monday night by one of Mr. Trumps allies in the news media, John Solomon, who also serves as one of the former presidents representatives to the archives. The archives then released the letter on Tuesday.

Clarks superiors said they would never send such a letter. In an email to Clark, acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue said he had seen no evidence of fraud that would make state election results unreliable.
Donoghue said sending such the letter would be a grave step for the department to take and it could have tremendous constitutional, political and social ramifications for the country.
When Justice Department officials resisted these and other efforts to aide Trumps campaign, he considered appointing Clark to be acting attorney general. Senior officials threatened to resign if Clark was appointed, and the president backed down.
But Trump remained frustrated that the department had not uncovered fraud. And he found a target for his wrath: Byung BJay Pak, the U.S. attorney in Atlanta. Trump blamed Pak for failing to uncover fraud, and he said Pak had to go.
Pak resigned on Jan. 4, 2021.

More On The Trump Documents Inquiry
- A Revealing Filing: A court filing by the Justice Department painted the clearest picture to date of its efforts to retrieve documents from the Florida home of former President Donald J. Trump, suggesting classified materials stored at the residence were likely moved and hidden as the government sought their return.
- Special Master: Mr. Trump, who used the slow pace of litigation to run out the clock on congressional oversight, is seeking intervention that could lead to appeals and delay the inquiry
- Was There Obstruction?: The redacted affidavit released by the Justice Department on Aug. 26 included information indicating that prosecutors had evidence suggesting efforts to impede the recovery of documents a scenario that could raise significant legal peril for Mr. Trump.
In his email, Mr. Stern noted that there were two sets of documents in particular the archives could not find: the original correspondence between Mr. Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and a letter that President Barack Obama had left for Mr. Trump on his first day in office.
Mr. Stern told the lawyers that just before Mr. Trump left office, the letters from Mr. Kim were placed in a binder for the president but never made their way to the archives, as required by the law. It is essential that these original records be transferred to NARA as soon as possible, he wrote, using the acronym for the National Archives and Records Administration.

A lot of these systems are flagged automatically or occur when customer complaints come in, so thats a hard case to make. Theres no evidence that the carriers or their partners are flagging and blocking these messages for reasons other than preventing spam.
The telecom companies are also far more reserved when it comes to staking out a political position, with the carriers previously having praised Trump for his large corporate tax cut in 2017.
When it comes to combatting spam, the motivation is primarily driven by the need to eliminate something most people find annoying.

- Letters to the president should be submitted on standard 8.5″ x 11″ paper.
- Typing is preferred. If, for some reason, you opt to send a handwritten letter, be sure to use ink and ensure that it is neat and legible.
- The greeting should specify either “Dear President ,” or “Dear President,”
- As a letter to the president is a formal document, so it’s best to use a standard business letter format.
- Write a draft of your letter, then proofread carefully to ensure that it conveys your intended meaning and is free from errors.
How Do These Mass Text Messages Work
Political campaigns tap companies such as Hustle or RumbleUp that employ hundreds of people who each send thousands of text messages to potential voters. Theyre exactly like the text messages that you or I send to our friends and family, and are categorized as peer-to-peer, or P2P messages. Thats different from whats known as application-to-peer, or A2P, messages, which are more formal blast text messages.
Since P2P messages are normally supposed to be more limited exchanges between individuals, systems may flag accounts that send too many messages. If, for instance, you send more than 1,000 messages in a day, those messages will likely get blocked.
Companies will work with the carriers ahead of time to get prior approval to send these mass messages.

Texts Come Hours Apart With No Clear Explanation For How The Money Will Be Spent
Find your bookmarks in your Independent Premium section, under my profile
Former President Donald Trump is out of office, and has not announced any plans to run in the future, but that hasnt stopped his political action committee from bombarding his fans with daily requests for money and other support.
Months of text messages reviewed by The Independent reveal that supporters of the former president received at least one text message per day throughout the month of May, with some texts coming mere hours apart ahead of fundraising deadlines.
The donation links route money to the Trump Make America Great Again Committee, a joint fundraising committee that splits funds between the Republican National Committee , Mr Trumps 2020 campaign for president, as well as the Save America PAC, an organisation founded by Mr Trump to fund his future political efforts.
The frequency of the calls for donations rivals that of most active political campaigns, and suggests that Mr Trump is keen on maintaining a massive war chest throughout his post-presidency that means his endorsement carries huge financial weight in any local race.
Some texts sent to supporters via the automated service are designed to appear as if they were personally written by the former president, while others are signed by Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr, and former first lady Melania Trump.
The Independent has reached out to the office of Mr Trump for comment.

Archives Told Trump In April That Fbi Would Examine More Than 100 Classified Documents Returned From Mar
Former president Donald Trump returned more than 100 classified documents, comprising more than 700 pages, to the National Archives in January, according to a letter released by the Archives on Tuesday.
Acting Archivist Debra Steidel Wall also notified Trumps lawyer Evan Corcoran that the agency would provide the FBI access to 15 boxes of materials in order to investigate whether those records were handled in an unlawful manner” and conduct an assessment to determine if any damage might have resulted from the improper handling of materials, according to the May 10 letter.
The more than 100 documents turned over in January were among the materials in 15 boxes of records recovered by the Archives from the former presidents Mar-a-Lago club earlier this year, after nearly a year of back and forth over missing presidential documents between Trumps legal team and the agency charged with preserving the nations federal records.
As the Department of Justices National Security Division explained to you on April 29, 2022: There are important national security interests in the FBI and others in the Intelligence Community getting access to these materials. According to NARA, among the materials in the boxes are over 100 documents with classification markings, comprising more than 700 pages. Some include the highest levels of classification, including Special Access Program materials, Steidel Wall wrote.

Read The Bogus Letter Trump Justice Department Ally Wanted To Send To Georgia
The first public hearing of the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol featured a broad look at then-President Donald Trumps efforts to overturn Joe Bidens victory in the 2020 election.
One key piece of evidence featured: A letter that a Trump ally at the Justice Department wanted to send to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, House Speaker David Ralston and Senate President Pro Tem Butch Miller in late December 2020. The letter was part of Trumps effort to enlist the Justice Department in his campaign to overturn the election in Georgia and other swing states.
Jeffrey Clark, a senior Justice Department official allied with Trump, wanted the department to intervene. He drafted the extraordinary letter to Georgia officials, dated Dec. 28, 2020.
The letter said the Justice Department had significant concerns about fraud that may have affected the outcome of the election in Georgia and other states. As evidence, it cited allegations raised in a Georgia Senate report and in a Trump lawsuit. And it urged Georgia officials to convene a special session of the General Assembly to consider invalidating Georgias official election results and selecting the winner themselves.
On Thursday the House committee cited Clarks letter as evidence of Trumps effort to use the Justice Department to overturn Bidens victory on the false premise that the election was stolen.
