Pm: The Most Memorable Us Capitol Rioter Was From Arizona

Arguably the highest-profile protester at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was a horn-hatted, bare-chested, heavily shamanistic tattooed man from Phoenix seen carrying a spear through hallways as he squared off with police.

Jake Angeli, 34, was recorded on video strutting into the U.S. Senate chamber and taking the dais. He left a note for Vice President Mike Pence Its only a matter of time. Justice is coming! that prosecutors said was a threat.

Angeli, according to prosecutors citing security footage, was among the first people to breach the Capitol. A federal judge said that Angeli quite literally spearheaded it.

His attire fur hat with horns, his face painted red, white and blue intricate tattoos visible on his bare chest holding a spear made him one of the most-photographed and recognizable protesters.

He has since been mocked on NBCs Saturday Night Live, CBSs The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and by the Sirius XM radio host Howard Stern, among others. A play in London inspired by Trumps presidency, The 47th, features a character dressed in Angelis getup.

Angeli told FBI agents that he went to Washington, D.C., because he was answering the call from President Donald Trump, who had asked supporters to amass on the day Congress would officially certify the 2020 election.

The thought, expressed by Trump himself in a speech just before the riot, was that enough public pressure would push Congress to delay or reject the election results.

Ohio Republicans Get Shout Outs

Trump thanked a slate of Republicans for their work in Ohio, including Secretary of State Frank LaRose and auditor Keith Faber. He applauded LaRose specifically for his role in the states redistricting process.

He didnt acknowledge the candidates running for governor this year, but he made a reference to this terrible governor that you had when talking about former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who ran against Trump in the 2016 GOP primary. Trump also praised Ohio Republican Party chair Bob Paduchik.

Is Trumps Coming To Michigan Controversial

It is. And heres why: Trumps endorsement of DePerno and Karamo comes ahead of an April 23 endorsement convention where the state Republican Party delegates will begin formally nominating candidates for down-ballot races, including attorney general and secretary of state. The nominees for other races, like governor or congressional seats, will be selected by the voters themselves during the Aug. 2 primary. And its not only Trump who has made endorsements, but also state party co-chair Meshawn Maddock, a staunch Trump supporter who is expected to be at the rally.

Taken together, that has quite a few Republicans either privately or publicly upset. Party leaders and officials typically dont make endorsements ahead of primaries or the partys selection, not wanting to make it seem as though they are trying to dictate an outcome. In the case of DePerno and Karamo, some Republicans are making the case that their pro-Trump stances are extreme to a point where more mainstream voters will reject them. That could keep the party from winning in what is otherwise expected to be a favorable year.

Why Does The Free Press Call Trumps Claims About 2020 Baseless

This gets a little complicated, but the long and short of it is that there has been no credible evidence found, in numerous audits, court cases and other efforts, to back up Trumps claims of widespread election fraud in any state, including Michigan, where he made those allegations.

Democratic and Republican election challengers observed the vote count across Michigan, including in Detroit, where Trump wrongly claimed that invalid ballots appeared mysteriously in the middle of the night. Officials from both parties reviewed and certified the results. Courts rejected challenges to the outcome as based on misunderstanding, conspiracy and conjecture. Post-election audits confirmed that voting machines accurately read ballots. Trumps own attorney general, William Barr, told Trump that a look into allegations of corruption in Detroit found them baseless.

A comprehensive investigation led by GOP lawmakers uncovered no evidence of widespread fraud and told voters they should have confidence that Joe Biden legitimately won Michigan. And a review in Michigan, nowhere near enough to have tipped the outcome of the election, which Biden won in the state by more than 154,000 votes.

Trump Rio Rancho Rally: Time and Channel

His handlers say the rally is a continuation of President Trumps unprecedented effort to advance the MAGA agenda by energizing voters and highlighting America First candidates and causes. In Michigan, hes coming specifically to raise the profile of a couple of Republican candidates he has endorsed: Matthew DePerno, a lawyer who is running for the partys nomination for state attorney general, and Kristina Karamo, who is running for the nomination for secretary of state, the chief elections officer in Michigan.

Both candidates, by the way, have been strong supporters of Trumps unsupported claims that the 2020 election, including in Michigan, was corrupt and stolen from him.

How About A Candidate For Governor

As for Michigans marquee race this election cycle the race for governor Trump has yet to endorse a candidate for the Republican nomination to take on Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer this fall.

Politically speaking, that makes some sense, given that no front-runner has emerged. But its still entirely possible the former president could make a decision sometime, possibly soon. And whatever his delay, its not for lack of suitors.

At least seven of the candidates seeking the Republican nomination were expected to attend Saturdays rally. That includes former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, Oakland County businessman Perry Johnson, Norton Shores businesswoman Tudor Dixon, Ottawa County real estate agent Ryan Kelley, Oakland County pastor Ralph Rebandt, Livingston County evangelist Bob Scott, and Grand Rapids businesswoman Donna Brandenburg.

As for the others, Kalamazoo chiropractor Garrett Soldano is on a spring break vacation with his two young sons and is unable to attend, and Michigan State Police Capt. Mike Brown, of Stevensville, cited a prior campaign commitment. Grand Haven financial adviser Michael Markey said he also would be on a previously scheduled family vacation Saturday.

Also, as of Friday, Oakland County businessman and former auto dealer Kevin Rinke said he hadnt made a decision as to whether to attend, a spokeswoman said.

Pm: Ali Alexander Cooperated And That Affects Biggs Gosar

Ali Alexander, the architect of the “Stop the Steal” movement, cooperated with the committee early on, and that could shed light on what more the panel has learned about Arizona Republican Reps. Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar.

It’s unclear when Alexander’s contributions may come up, but when they do, it could offer some of the most important information the committee gathered involving two of the more controversial members of Congress.

In a since-deleted social media post before the attack on the Capitol, Alexander singled out Biggs and Gosar, along with Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., for helping give his group’s effort success.

Alexander called Gosar the movement’s “spirit animal” and said he spoke “in person” to Biggs. A spokesman for Biggs insisted in the days after the riot that Biggs had no direct contact with Alexander, so their interaction remains a point of wide factual dispute.

Alexander also had ties to state Rep. Mark Finchem, R-Oro Valley, and former state Rep. Anthony Kern, R-Glendale, who spoke at “Stop the Steal” rallies and were at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Finchem and Kern were mingling with crowds amassed on the Capitol steps, photos, texts and social media accounts show.

Pm: Arizona Connections To The Probe

As the Democratic-led House committee begins showing its evidence, there are several major Arizona-related matters to clarify.

What does the committee say about the roles of Arizona Republican Reps. Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs? The panel sought but failed to get Biggs testimony, but it didnt make a similar request of Gosar. That seems odd because they were both involved in many of the same activities that the committee indicated knowing more about.

Both, for example, attended a December 2020 strategy meeting at the White House and both pressed Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers, R-Mesa, to help in their effort to question or replace the states certified election results.

White House phone calls, baseless fraud: The origins of the Arizona election review

Another big question is what to make of the Trump electors who submitted paperwork claiming a Trump victory in Arizona. Were those participants trying to preserve legal arguments for Trump, or were they aware it could be used to justify setting aside election results?

There were at least some people tied to extremist groups from Arizona at the Capitol on Jan. 6, and some have already been charged or convicted. But will the committee make clear how the national network of extremists interacted with locals in Arizona?

Pm: Biggs Resumes Attacks On Committee

Biden remains stuck in Trump’s shadow

After the committee paused for a 10-minute recess, Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., offered his assessment of what he had seen to that point.

The partisan January 6 committee is nothing more than an illegitimate show trial, he said in a tweet.

He included a photo that included an earlier statement from him as well.

The Democrats have basically corrupted every institution in America, Biggs said. The committee is designed for television. Its not designed to find truth. Its not designed to come up with a legitimate legislative purpose.

The statements build on Biggs view that the committees work is intended to harm Republicans.

Earlier on Thursday, Biggs noted his refusal to testify before the committee, saying this was political warfare and dangerously un-American.
