Election 2020: What has President Trump done to America? | The Economist

Donald Trump once pledged that, if elected president, he would put America first and spend no time at all worried about what the rest of the world thought about us. Mission accomplished!

drasticallyabundantlyThe Point: We’ve never been in this place before in the modern presidency and the post-World War II world. It’s yet another line Trump has not just crossed, but obliterated.

Trump Has Made Russian

Propaganda experts have identified a powerful technique they call the fire hose of falsehood. Perfected by the Russians, this information-warfare method, according to researchers at the Rand Corporation, is marked by high numbers of channels and messages and a shameless willingness to disseminate partial truths or outright fictions. By pumping out every manner of lie, half-truth, and conspiracy theory through every available channel, a propagandist can cause bewilderment and cynicism as the public concludes that anything might or might not be true and that no one can be trusted. This bewilderment and cynicism, in turn, make the public more receptive to demagogues, dictators, and kleptocrats.

Even that old KGB hand Vladimir Putin has cause to admire Trumps achievement. Until Trump, no American politician had ever imagined running a fire-hose-of-falsehood campaign against the American public, much less had figured out how to do it. Trump saw the possibilities and capitalized on them. He opened the disinformation spigot on the first day of his presidency, with a blatant lie about the size of his inauguration crowd, and then spewed falsehoods at a rate that defied fact-checkingin October, more than 50 falsehoods a day.

Trump Has Consolidated His Role As The Republican Partys Godfather

Plenty of Republicans, both in politics and on the street, view Trump and his policies with distaste. But, as the saying goes, when you have them by thewell, lets say by certain soft parts of their anatomytheir hearts and minds will follow.

Trumps leverage is in the Republican primaries. In most congressional districts, a single tweet from the president can make life difficult for a Republican who annoys him. A Trump denunciation can bring forth one or more primary challengers. An endorsement can make the difference between winning and losing, or between winning comfortably and squeaking through. Trumps demands and proclamations influence who runs for office, how they run, and how they behave in office.

What Trump Has Done To America

The Supreme Court slammed the door on President Donald Trumps preposterous lawsuits. State legislators ignored his pressure to countermand the voters. The Electoral College cast a majority of its votes for President-elect Joe Biden. Trumps efforts to usurp the presidency have failed. That is cause for relief.

But not too much relief. No one who understands the law believed that Trump and his supporters and enablers stood more than a minuscule chance of overturning the election. In the course of failing to usurp the presidency, however, Trump succeeded at usurping the Republican Party. On that front, his accomplishments since November 3 have been impressive. With his legal challenges safely out of the way, now is a good moment to take stock.

Bunker President: Biden Has Done Just 10 Interviews Since Becoming President Trump Did 57 By This Point

Trump: Pakistan Has Not Done

President Joe Bidens administration has been characterized by constant gaffes and disasters. The American people want explanations for these missteps, but Biden has consistently avoided tough questions.

Former CBS White House reporter Mark Knoller said that as of Tuesday, Biden had participated in a measly 10 interviews since becoming president.

Mark Knoller

By this point in his administration, former President Donald Trump had done 57 interviews, Politico reported.

The outlet took a jab at Trump by pointing out that 16 of those interviews were within the friendly confines of Fox News. Never mind that he did over double the number of interviews with outlets that probably lean left.

In addition, Politico said former President Barack Obama had participated in 131 interviews by this point in his presidency. Most of those were probably more puff pieces than hard-hitting journalism considering the establishment media was head-over-heels for Obama after his election.

Biden even did more interviews as vice president than hes doing now.

The confusing thing is that Biden could be giving interviews within the friendly confines of CNN or CNBC. No one is truly expecting him to go on Fox News and face the fire.

The American public just wants to see the president speak with anyone in the media. But he cannot muster the courage to do even that.

Joe Biden baselessly claims he was involved in civil rights movement.

Us 2020 Election: The Economy Under Trump In Six Charts

Claim: President Trump says he built the greatest ever US economy prior to the coronavirus outbreak and that now it’s recovering faster than ever.

Reality Check verdict: It’s true the economy was doing well prior to the pandemic – continuing a trend which began during the Obama administration – but there have been periods when it was much stronger.

The US economy was then hit by the biggest economic contraction ever recorded as a result of the pandemic. It has since bounced back strongly, but hasn’t regained all its losses.

We’ve looked at the economy in six key charts.

The latest numbers show economic output surged by an annualised 33% in the third quarter of 2020, following a record fall as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic.

The recovery, although strong, hasn’t yet brought economic activity back to pre-pandemic levels.

Mr Trump has said the recent recovery in growth is “the biggest in the history of our country by almost triple…that’s bigger than any nation”.

Yes, it is the biggest quarterly increase, but by more like double – outdoing the previous peak of 16.7% in the first quarter of 1950.

However, Mr Trump’s comparison with other countries isn’t right. From July to September this year, the economy grew by 7.4% in the US . This is less than Germany, Italy and the eurozone as a whole.

During his first three years in office, President Trump oversaw an annual average growth of 2.5%.

Perhaps no one was less surprised last week when it was reported that U.S. President Donald Trump had called American war dead losers and suckers than his former high school classmate George M. White.

The 74-year-old retired Army veteran was Trumps superiorthe first captain, or highest-ranking cadetin Trumps 1964 graduating class at the New York Military Academy. White said he witnessed up close Trumps contempt for military service, discipline, and tradition, as well his ungoverned sense of entitlement, all helped along by his father Fred Trumps generous donations to the school.

No, those remarks absolutely didnt surprise me. In my dealings with him he was a heartless, obnoxious son of a bitch, White told me in an interview over the weekend.

Opinion: the norm-busting, ludicrous, calculated, dangerous and inept president leaves behind a damaged country

We can only hope that we have seen the last, ugly stand in the regime of Donald Trump. Last Wednesday afternoon, with a band of the president’s Republican congressional supporters already making formal speeches inside the building to dispute the electoral result, a mob inspired by the president stormed the Capitol, occupying offices and laying siege to the floor of the House.

Ludicrous, calculated, dangerous and inept: the two forces, nefarious Republican lawmakers prepared to advocate overturning a democratic election, and rampaging members of the Trumposphere motivated by a mixture of rage, cultlike devotion, and QAnon conspiracies, expressed the essence of the Trumpian moment.

The norm-busting president finally crossed a line that even many Republicans could not endure. His once reliable enabler-in-chief, Lindsey Graham, has distanced himself, earning abuse from Trump supporters when he passed through Washington’s Reagan National Airport. Normally complicit Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell criticised attempts to dispute the election prior to the events at the Capitol and then condemned the actions when the session resumed.

Failure: Replacing The Affordable Care Act

The late GOP Sen. John McCain’s iconic “thumbs-down” vote denied Trump a full congressional repeal of former President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law.

But Trump did have success in dismantling parts of the law. His tax bill included a rollback of the tax penalty for those who did not enroll in healthcare.

Trump never offered a replacement for the Affordable Care Act. As a candidate Trump promised “insurance for everybody” and a more immediate replacement to the nearly decade-old ACA. But he didn’t deliver on that as president.

Trump Rolling Back Obama Era Policies

Its OK, too, in Trumps America, to be upset that your school-age daughter might be forced to and locker rooms with biological males or forced to compete against biological males in sports that are supposedly girls-only. In 2017 Trump rescinded an Obama-era regulation directing public schools across the nation to let transgender students use opposite-sex facilities. Earlier this year the Trump-administration Justice Department joined a lawsuit filed on behalf of three Connecticut high school girls who are challenging a state law that allowed two transgender students to win the top prizes in girls track events.

Also rescinded by the Trump administration was the Obama Education Departments Dear Colleague letter in 2011 that required college tribunals to turn themselves into kangaroo courts when judging accusations of sexual assault against faculty and students: low standards of proof, no cross-examination if the alleged victim doesnt feel up to it, nothing wrong with violating double jeopardy by adjudicating the case all over again when the first outcome is in favor of the accused. Its OK in Trumps America to expect due process and a fair hearing when youre accused of a campus sex offense after your drunken hookup of the night before leads to hurt feelings.

Its OK to be pro-life. Its OK to be pro-Israel. Its OK to be pro-gun ownership. Its OK to be pro-cop.

$100m To Flint Michigan

Water contamination crisis started in April 2014

Its true that in March 2017, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $100 million grant to the state of Michigan to upgrade the drinking water infrastructure in Flint, which experienced a lead pollution crisis potentially affecting as many as 100,000 people beginning in 2014. There has been some dispute, however, over whether this ought to be labeled a Trump accomplishment or an Obama accomplishment.

As we noted in a previous article, funding for the grant came from a bill signed by President Obama in 2016, though the monies werent officially awarded until after he left office, hence some prefer to credit it to Trump.

When it comes to health care, President Donald Trump has promised far more than he has delivered. But that doesnt mean his administration has had no impact on health issues including the operation of the Affordable Care Act, prescription drug prices and womens access to reproductive health services.

In a last-ditch effort to raise his approval rating on an issue on which he trails Democrat Joe Biden in most polls, Trump on Thursday unveiled his America First Healthcare Plan, which includes a number of promises with no details and pumps some minor achievements into what the administration calls monumental steps to improve the efficiency and quality of health care in the United States.

What Has Trump Done For The Economy

Trump has repeated many times that he has supervised “the greatest economy” ever, according to The Los Angeles Times.

However, the Times reports that the economy has performed roughly on the same level it performed for Barack Obama during the last three years of his tenure.

The economy added 6.6 million jobs in Trumps first three years, compared to 8.1million in the last three years under Obama, according to the newspaper.

The country’s unemployment rate under Trump fell to an impressive 3.5 percent before the devastating coronavirus pandemic struck.

That’s the lowest mark in 50 years.

In April 2020 it was close to 15 percent but has steadily fallen, and in September stood at 7.9 percent.

May 201: California Sues Us Dot For Pulling High

The state of California decided on 21 May to sue the DOT, after the government decided to revoke its $929m in funding from the California High-Speed Rail Authority , which is in charge of developing a high-speed train connecting San Francisco to Los Angeles.

As part of the lawsuit, the state of California and the California High-Speed Rail Authority said that the federal governments decision was precipitated by President Trumps overt hostility to California, its challenge to his border wall initiatives, and what he called the green disaster high-speed rail project.

As reported by legal news website jurist.org, the complainants argued that the Federal Railroad Administration , the DOT division in charge of railways, abruptly stopped cooperating with them in 2018, having invested in the project since 2010. The US Governments decision to terminate the project was reported to California in February 2019.

On 16 May, the FRA published a statement regarding the agreements termination, citing the states lack of progress as the main reason. FRA finds that CHSRA has repeatedly failed to comply with the terms of the FY10 Agreement and has failed to make reasonable progress on the project, read the statement.

Additionally, California has abandoned its original vision of a high-speed passenger rail service connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles, which was essential to its applications for FRA grant funding.
