It’s one thing to dislike the things a politician says or does, but to attribute Donald Trumps behaviours to dementia is both hurtful and unhelpful.
This language reinforces the myth that people with dementia are ‘crazy’ or incapable of making sound decisions.
It also supports the idea that people living with dementia are unfit for employment, which may not be the case.
We want a society in which people with dementia feel understood, valued and able to contribute to their community. But to get there we need to stop making assumptions and recognise the many people living well with dementia.

In Alzheimers, as language skills deteriorate, we see two types of tell-tale speech disorders, or paraphasias:
Semantic paraphasia involves choosing the incorrect words. For instance, after Attorney General William Barr released a letter on the Mueller report, Trump said: I hope they now go and take a look at the oranges, the oranges of that investigation, the beginnings of that investigation.”
Phonemic paraphasia, which is linked to the moderate to severe stages of Alzheimers, is described as “the substitution of a word with a nonword that preserves at least half of the segments and/or number of syllables of the intended word. Trumps speech patterns appear even more disordered when you go beyond the sound bite and look at a whole speech. According to Raw Story, John Talmadge, a professor of clinical psychology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, believes that the contents of the POTUS rant were indicative of his dementia. More specifically, Talmadge claimed that Trumps rant proved that his mental condition is deteriorating.

There is a much bigger issue in play here. We live in an age where many feel that the art of debate is dying as people become increasingly intolerable of opinions other than their own. People would rather discredit someone personallythe debate style known as argumentum ad hominemthan engage them, and questioning their cognitive capabilities has become disturbingly common tactic.
Dementia is, however, an extremely complex and nuanced health issue. Dementia itself is not classified as a disease but more a symptom of one of many diseases . In simple terms, we can classify dementia as a loss of cognitive functioning. But it is very much a case of the more we learn about it, the more we notice the huge gaps in our knowledge base.
Although there are some mental declines as we age, not all of our faculties automatically decline, and some actually improve. Elizabeth Zelinski, a professor of gerontology and psychology at the University of Southern California, said some older people are generally better at some things than younger people, in particular divergent thinking, the ability to approach problems in creative or unexpected ways.
