Has Donald Trump changed in the 14 months since hes been out of office? Has the time away given him any perspective on the many mistakes his administration made? Nevertheless, TheWashington Post wanted a little more proofto look under the hood and hear it from the deranged horses mouth that, yes, he is still a lying sociopath. And they got it!

Later that day, he dispatched White House press secretary Sean Spicer, in Spicer’s first briefing room appearance, to claim “the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration — period — both in person and around the globe.”

Donald Trump made more than 30,000 false or misleading statements during his four years as president of the United States, analysis suggests.

The astounding figure, which roughly equates to 21 false statements per day of his tenure at the White House, comes after a tumultuous post election period in which he spent weeks falsely alleging that the 2020 election was stolen, in remarks that spurred on his supporters to storm the US Capitol on 6 January.

According to analysis by the Washington Post, Mr Trump made 30,573 false or misleading claims between his first day in office, on 20 January 2017, and his final day on Wednesday, when Joe Biden was sworn in as the countrys next president.

Among the Republicans most repeated untruths was that his administration built the greatest economy in the history of the world. That phrase, according to the Postss analysis, was used at least 493 times.

Another favourite and his second most repeated falsehood was the former presidents claim that tax cuts introduced by his administration were the biggest on record.

The Morality Of Deception

Why, though, are lies thought so wrongful in the first instance?

Immanuel Kant, in the 18th century, provided one powerful account of the wrongness of lying. For Kant, lying was wrong in much the same way that threats and coercion are wrong. All of these override the autonomous will of another person, and treat that person as a mere tool.

For Kant, human beings were morally special precisely because they could use reason to decide what to do. When a gunman uses threats to coerce a person to do a particular act, he disrespects that persons rational agency. Lies are a similar disrespect to rational agency: Ones decision has been manipulated, so that the act is no longer ones own.

Kant defended these conclusions without exception. Kant regarded any lie as immoral even one told to a murderer at the door.

Modern-day philosophers have often accepted Kants account, while seeking exceptions from its rigidness. In his book Ethics for Adversaries, philosopher Arthur Applbaumexplains why citizens might sometimes consent to being deceived, which might be useful in understanding presidential deception.

For example, a political leader who gives honest answers about a forthcoming military operation would likely imperil that operation and most people would not want that. The key, though, is that people might accept such deception, after the fact, because of what that deception made possible.

Trump lied that the tariffs he imposed and bragged about do not exist.

He lied 52 times that he was the one who managed to pass the Veterans Choice health care program, which was passed under Barack Obama in 2014. He lied 30 times that his tariffs had prompted U.S. Steel to open six, seven, eight or nine new plants the claim varied by the day though the company was making investments in two existing plants.

The actual investments could have made for an effective boast. But Trump is Trump, and there is rarely an accurate boast he doesnt think could be improved with some inaccuracy.

President Trump And Truth

It is likely that President Trump has lied more than previous presidents in public and, perhaps more significantly, he has also apparently lied about a wider variety of topics than his predecessors.

Soon after being elected he claimed, falsely, that his inaugural crowd was the largest ever. More recently, he insisted that Hurricane Dorian was likely to affect the coast of Alabama and he seems to have altered a map with a Sharpie to bolster his false claim. The pattern of deception has continued, most recently with his acknowledgment that he about the coronavirus and then his insistence that he had done no such thing.

What is striking about these lies, in contrast to the lies of previous presidents, is that they have generally been told in the absence of a particular and acute threat to either the presidents power or to the preservation of the United States.

Presidents have lied for good reasons and for bad ones, but very few have chosen to lie without a particularly unusual threat to themselves or their nation. If some presidential lies might be forgivable, it could be only because of the good to the nation those lies bring about and President Trumps lies seem unlikely to meet that test.

But that disturbing tally doesnt include the swathes of misinformation about election fraud that Trump has promoted since losing the 2020 vote to President-elect Joe Biden.

Trump told almost 4,000 lies in October alone as he ramped up his pre-election rhetoric and attacks on his rival, according to the columns editor Glenn Kessler. Thats double what he said in all of 2017, Kessler tweeted Monday.

The president set a one-day record for lies on Nov. 2 the day before the 2020 election when he told 504 falsehoods.

As of Jan. 20 last year, Trump had been credited with telling 16,241 lies during his time in office. Hes now on track to nearly double that in one year, Kessler pointed out.

A month later, Trump again said things were improving: At some point, itll go away. It may flare up, and it may not flare up. Well have to see what happens, he said May 15. By that point, at least 1.5 million Americans had been infected 88,101 had died. The numbers decreased slightly in the summer as cities that were home to early surges drove down their caseloads, but by the fall, the virus had taken root in nearly every U.S. community regional surges have led to one steady nationwide increase.

Trump continued to compare the virus to the flu even after he recovered from Covid-19 himself in early October.

Trump also routinely spread misinformation about testing, the efficacy of masks, and potential and unproven treatments for the virus, once claiming that injections of antibacterial cleaning agents like bleach might clean the lungs of the virus.

Erikson added that with Trump’s departure, the public might see Republican senators revert back to the truth, noting Republican Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell is “already done with Trump” in reportedly telling senators to vote their conscience in the upcoming impeachment trial on an article which stems from the election lie.

“If they don’t stand up for the truth, then they’re overestimating the power of this base that still wants them to falsely believe the election was stolen,” Erikson warned.

The most recent Gallup poll on Trump’s favorability found that he is leaving office with his lowest approval rating of his four years in office at 34%. Trump is the only president not to reach 50% approval rating during his time in office, since Gallup started polling the number in 1938.

But despite no evidence to support the view, according to a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, one out of every three Americans — and two in every three Republicans — believes that there was widespread voter fraud in the presidential election, indicating damage on the country’s democratic institutions needing repairs far beyond the Capitol’s shattered glass.
