Bidens Approach To China Is Both Old And New

Is President Trump Good or Bad for GOP Midterm Candidates?

A lot has been said in recent months of the similarities between Trump and Biden in terms of foreign policy. In short: while it seems that the USs rhetoric has changed under Biden, the substance has not.

This seems particularly true when it comes to China. For example, Biden has not revoked Trumps spree of tariffs, as the below chart shows.

Although the tone might be less inflammatory, the Biden administration has clearly continued a policy of suspicion over China, and continues to voice concern over the imbalanced economic relationship between the two countries, says Crow at PwC.

A ‘strategic competition’ with China, as practised by Trump, remains the guiding principle. However, within this framework, Biden appears to want to avoid knee-jerk tariffs, for example, and adopt less overtly aggressive tactics. Indeed, the new administration has not issued any new tariffs on China.

Although the tone might be less inflammatory, the Biden administration has clearly continued a policy of suspicion over China. Dr Alexis Crow

Bidens China approach is perhaps best summarised by US Secretary of State Antony Blinkens statement that the US must be competitive when it should be, collaborative when it can be, and adversarial when it must be.

While Trumps era was defined by isolationism, Biden has already reignited the multilateralism and collaborative spirit of yore, such as engaging in shuttle diplomacy with its allies around the Asia-Pacific region .

Reasons Trump Is Unfit To Be President

Part of the mad genius of Donald J. Trump is that he never runs from scandals. He just creates more of them. So many more that anyone attempting to track them all risks becoming numb as a survival mechanism.

A collective amnesia sets in. We ask ourselves, Do you remember that time when Trump got impeached, said that super-racist thing, cozied up to dictators, threatened our elections, or oh, whatever that was?

Well, we at The Bulwark do. Yes, it can be hard to keep up. We all need reminders. So, lest anyone forget or require convincing, heres a non-exhaustive list of 100 reasons Donald Trump is unfit to be president.

Fair And Reciprocal Trade

Secured historic trade deals to defend American workers.

Took strong actions to confront unfair trade practices and put America First.

  • Imposed tariffs on hundreds of billions worth of Chinese goods to protect American jobs and stop Chinas abuses under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
  • Directed an all-of-government effort to halt and punish efforts by the Communist Party of China to steal and profit from American innovations and intellectual property.
  • Imposed tariffs on foreign aluminum and foreign steel to protect our vital industries and support our national security.
  • Approved tariffs on $1.8 billion in imports of washing machines and $8.5 billion in imports of solar panels.
  • Blocked illegal timber imports from Peru.
  • Took action against France for its digital services tax that unfairly targets American technology companies.
  • Launched investigations into digital services taxes that have been proposed or adopted by 10 other countries.

Historic support for American farmers.

Donald Trump Is A Good President But Only For The Top 1%

On all economic measures, from jobs to health to GDP to disposable income, the president has failed America

As the worlds business elites trek to Davos for their annual gathering, people should be asking a simple question: have they overcome their infatuation with the US president?

Two years ago, a few rare corporate leaders were concerned about climate change, or upset at Donald Trumps misogyny and bigotry. Most, however, were celebrating the presidents tax cuts for billionaires and corporations and looking forward to his efforts to deregulate the economy. That would allow businesses to pollute the air more, get more Americans hooked on opioids, entice more children to eat their diabetes-inducing foods and engage in the sort of financial shenanigans that brought on the 2008 crisis.

Today, many corporate bosses are still talking about the continued GDP growth and record stock prices. But neither GDP nor the Dow is a good measure of economic performance. Neither tells us whats happening to ordinary citizens living standards or anything about sustainability. In fact, US economic performance over the past four years is Exhibit A in the indictment against relying on these indicators.

One reason for declining life expectancy in the US is what Anne Case and the Nobel laureate economist Angus Deaton call deaths of despair, caused by alcohol, drug overdoses and suicide. In 2017 , such deaths stood at almost four times their 1999 level.

“Grab them by the pussy!” Donald J. Trump, the newly elected president of the United States is known for his demeaning remarks against women and Latin American immigrants. Many people believe that anyone who oversteps the boundaries of good taste and manner is unfit to be a leader in a company or any organisation. However, proper manners are not what make a company successful. A leader cannot care about every opinion if he bring his or his organization’s agenda forward. Why do many people believe

Failure: Family Separations And The Deaths Of Migrant Children

Trump in 2016 campaigned on reducing undocumented immigration, pledging to take a hardline approach.

He made good on that promise when coming into office, but was accused of human-rights abuses and violating international law by the UN.

The Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy on illegal border crossings led to the separations of at least 5,500 families and saw children placed in cages.

The president of the American Academy of Pediatrics at the time described the practice as “nothing less than government-sanctioned child abuse.”

After widespread backlash, Trump issued an executive order in June 2018 to halt the family separations, and a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to reunite all those it had separated. But the fallout from the separations is ongoing.

Trump falsely blamed his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, for the policy that saw thousands of children separated from their parents.

At least six migrant children died in US custody, leading to widespread condemnation of conditions in detention facilities.

The UN human-rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, in July 2019 said she was “shocked” by the US government’s treatment of migrant children and the conditions they faced in detention facilities after crossing the border from Mexico.

Is Trump Like Andrew Jackson Yeah In All The Bad Ways And None Of The Good Ones

In a recent editorial for The Washington Post, historian J.M. Opal criticized Donald Trump by comparing him to Andrew Jackson, who Trump has said is his favorite president. Since historian Arthur Schlesinger’s masterful study “The Age of Jackson” is one of my favorite books, this got my attention.

Opal opens by mentioning the most recent humiliating setback in Trump’s post-presidential career: The “audit” of the presidential election in Arizona’s largest county completely backfired, reaffirming Joe Biden‘s victory in that state. That was one more piece of damaging news in an unbroken chain that has undercut Trump’s attempts to spread the malignant normality he has created for his fascist cult, one which asserts that he was the real winner of the 2020 election.

Opal’s reference to Jackson conjured up a peculiar memory. A few months after financier Anthony Scaramucci was hired and almost immediately fired as White House communications director, I interviewed him about Trump’s understanding of American history which meant that we talked about Andrew Jackson. I referred to a passage from Jackson’s 1832 message vetoing renewal of a charter for America’s national bank, in which he argued that “there are no necessary evils in government. Its evils exist only in its abuses. If it would confine itself to equal protection, and, as Heaven does it rains, shower favors alike on the high and the low, the rich and poor, it would be an unqualified blessing.”

A Look At Trump’s Economic Legacy

Examining the outgoing president’s policies from tax cuts to trade wars.

How Donald Trump has transformed the presidency

President Donald Trump campaigned as a billionaire businessman and champion of the working class with the economic prowess and deal-cutting skills that politicians in Washington, D.C., lacked.

He summed up his position neatly during the campaign: “I’ll be the greatest jobs president that God ever created.”

On the campaign trail, Trump claimed to be laser-focused on bringing back manufacturing and mining jobs, renegotiating trade deals that led to work disappearing overseas and curtailing immigration.

His Clintonian tack of “it’s the economy, stupid,” despite the myriad scandals and investigations that dogged him, largely worked as GDP grew at a healthy clip, the stock market soared and unemployment rates hit a half-century low, until the coronavirus pandemic gutted the job market.

Yet as he leaves after his one-term tenure, Trump has become the first president since Herbert Hoover during the Great Depression to depart office with fewer jobs in the country than when he entered.

Economists say Trumps economic legacy will be defined by his failure in leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic that exacerbated the financial downturn, domestic policies that overwhelmingly benefited the wealthy, and international trade policies that hurt U.S. industry while simultaneously alienating allies.

Here is a look at the outgoing president’s legacy on the U.S. economy.

Accomplishment: Defeating Isis’s Caliphate And Killing Abu Bakr Al

ISIS shocked the world in 2014 when it took over a large swath of territory across Iraq and Syria and declared a caliphate.

The terrorist group’s territorial holdings were the basis for its so-called caliphate, and provided it will a major base of operations to conduct attacks across the world.

After a five-year effort led by the US, ISIS’s caliphate was finally defeated in March 2019.

Trump at times falsely claimed that ISIS is totally defeated, embellishing the extent of the US military’s success against the terrorist organization during his presidency. Though the terrorist group has lost its territory its so-called caliphate it’s still estimated to have up to 18,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.

In late October, a US raid led to the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Baghdadi was the world’s most wanted terrorist up to that point and his death represented a major blow to the terrorist group.

“Last night, the United States brought the world’s No. 1 terrorist leader to justice,” Trump said at the time. “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead.”

“Capturing or killing him has been the top national security priority of my administration,” he added.

A Dearth Of Shared Facts And Information

One of the few things that Republicans and Democrats could agree on during Trumps tenure is that they didnt share the same set of facts. In a 2019 survey, around three-quarters of Americans said most Republican and Democratic voters disagreed not just over political plans and policies, but over basic facts.

Much of the disconnect between the parties involved the news media, which Trump routinely disparaged as fake news and the enemy of the people. Republicans, in particular, expressed widespread and growing distrust of the press. In a 2019 survey, Republicans voiced more distrust than trust in 2o of the 30 specific news outlets they were asked about, even as Democrats expressed more trust than distrust in 22 of those same outlets. Republicans overwhelmingly turned to and trusted one outlet included in the study Fox News even as Democrats used and expressed trust in a wider range of sources. The study concluded that the two sides placed their trust in two nearly inverse media environments.

Some of the media organizations Trump criticized most vocally saw the biggest increases in GOP distrust over time. The share of Republicans who said they distrusted CNN rose from 33% in a 2014 survey to 58% by 2019. The proportion of Republicans who said they distrusted The Washington Post and The New York Times rose 17 and 12 percentage points, respectively, during that span.3
