What Has Trump Done For Our Country

White Nationalists And Charlottesville Rally

JUST IN: Trump Releases Veterans Day Message, Jabs Biden: ‘Our Country Has Gone Through A Lot’

On August 13, 2017, Trump condemned violence “on many sides” after a gathering of hundreds of white nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia, the previous day turned deadly. A white supremacist drove a car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one woman and injuring 19 others. According to Sessions, that action met the definition of domestic terrorism. During the rally there had been other violence, as some counter-protesters charged at the white nationalists with swinging clubs and mace, throwing bottles, rocks, and paint. Trump did not expressly mention Neo-Nazis, white supremacists, or the alt-right movement in his remarks on August 13, but the following day condemned “the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups“. On August 15, he again blamed “both sides”.

Potential Conflicts Of Interest

Trump’s presidency has been marked by significant public concern about conflict of interest stemming from his diverse business ventures. In the lead up to his inauguration, Trump promised to remove himself from the day-to-day operations of his businesses. Trump placed his sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. at the head of his businesses claiming they would not communicate with him regarding his interests. However, critics noted that this would not prevent him from having input into his businesses and knowing how to benefit himself, and Trump continued to receive quarterly updates on his businesses. As his presidency progressed, he failed to take steps or show interest in further distancing himself from his business interests resulting in numerous potential conflicts. Ethics experts found Trump’s plan to address conflicts of interest between his position as president and his private business interests to be entirely inadequate. Unlike every other president in the last 40 years, Trump did not put his business interests in a blind trust or equivalent arrangement “to cleanly sever himself from his business interests”. In January 2018, a year into his presidency, Trump owned stakes in hundreds of businesses.

Attacked A Republican For Having A Brother That Doesn’t Exist

As his options for overturning the election started to run dry, Trump began lashing out at Republicans, specifically targeting Brad Raffensperger the secretary of state for Georgia. In a strange moment, Trump tweeted a conspiracy theory that Raffensperger’s brother “works for China” and that they “definitely don’t want ‘Trump.'” The only problem is that Raffensperger doesn’t have a brother at all.

When He Seemingly Told Police Officers To Rough Up Suspects

Here’s the president of the United States encouraging police officers to be rough with people they arrest https://t.co/iLzoUEY89e David Mack 1501267005

In 2017, Trump gave a speech in Long Island to members of the Suffolk County Police Department. In it, he seemed to encourage roughing up suspects, saying:

When you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over, like, don’t hit their head and they’ve just killed somebody. Don’t hit their head. I said, you can take the hand away, okay?

He doubled down, saying Dont be too nice. The remarks drew such criticism that Suffolk County even tweeted a rejoinder.

As a department, we do not and will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners. Suffolk County Police Department 1501275200

‘putting Democracy To The Test’

Opinion

Kathryn Brownell is a history professor at Purdue University, focusing on the relationships between media, politics, and popular culture, with an emphasis on the American presidency.

What’s Trump’s key legacy?

Broadly speaking: Donald Trump, and his enablers in the Republican Party and conservative media, have put American democracy to the test in an unprecedented way. As a historian who studies the intersection of media and the presidency, it is truly striking the ways in which he has convinced millions of people that his fabricated version of events is true.

What happened on 6 January at the US Capitol is a culmination of over four years during which President Trump actively advanced misinformation.

Just as Watergate and the impeachment inquiry dominated historical interpretations of Richard Nixon’s legacy for decades, I do think that this particular post-election moment will be at the forefront of historical assessments of his presidency.

What else stands out to you?

Kellyanne Conway’s first introduction of the notion of “alternative facts” just days into the Trump administration when disputing the size of the inaugural crowds between Trump and Barack Obama.

Trump harnessed the power of social media and blurred the lines between entertainment and politics in ways that allowed him to bypass critics and connect directly to his supporters in an unfiltered way.

Tried To Penalise Sanctuary Cities For Migrants

Sanctuary cities are a loose name for states or localities that have regulations which can act as an obstacle for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to hunt down migrants they think they can deport.

So of course Trump has tried to penalise those areas.

How? By threatening to withhold federal funding from them.

Transition Period Inauguration And First 100 Days

Trump was inaugurated on January 20, 2017. He was sworn in by Chief JusticeJohn Roberts. In his seventeen-minute inaugural address, Trump painted a dark picture of contemporary America, pledging to end “American carnage” caused by urban crime and saying America’s “wealth, strength, and confidence has dissipated” by jobs lost overseas. He declared his strategy would be “America First.” The largest single-day protest in U.S. history, the Women’s March, took place the day after his inauguration and was driven by opposition to Trump and his policies and views.

One of Trump’s major first year accomplishments, made as part of a “100day pledge,” was the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch as an associate justice of the Supreme Court. Despite the Republican Party holding a majority in both houses of Congress, however, he was unable to fulfill another hundred-day promise, repealing the Affordable Care Act .

When The Trump Hotel Organisation Received $600000 For Hosting An Event For Kuwait

Trump apparently never divested from his business interests which means when an event held by Kuwait to celebrate their national day was held at Washingtons Trump International, there were questions raised.

Like whether the sitting president would see any of the reported $60,000 fee paid by Kuwait to host the event there.

And whether Trumps solution which is donating all profits from foreign government payments made to his hotels to the United States Treasury would really prevent any conflict of interest.

When He Attacked Former Prisoner Of War John Mccain As A Loser

Trump: Hate has no place in our country – BBC News

There was no love lost between late Republican Senator John McCain and Donald Trump.

But Trump certainly got in some low blows against his rival.

Upon McCains death in 2018, from a brain tumour, it was reported by witnesses that Trump was angered by his funeral being officially commemorated.

“Were not going to support that losers funeral, witnesses claimed the president said.

However, Trump then denied hed ever called McCain a loser.

Only problem was, footage from Trumps 2015 campaign run show him clearly slamming McCain as just that.

Trump Rolling Back Obama Era Policies

Its OK, too, in Trumps America, to be upset that your school-age daughter might be forced to and locker rooms with biological males or forced to compete against biological males in sports that are supposedly girls-only. In 2017 Trump rescinded an Obama-era regulation directing public schools across the nation to let transgender students use opposite-sex facilities. Earlier this year the Trump-administration Justice Department joined a lawsuit filed on behalf of three Connecticut high school girls who are challenging a state law that allowed two transgender students to win the top prizes in girls track events.

Also rescinded by the Trump administration was the Obama Education Departments Dear Colleague letter in 2011 that required college tribunals to turn themselves into kangaroo courts when judging accusations of sexual assault against faculty and students: low standards of proof, no cross-examination if the alleged victim doesnt feel up to it, nothing wrong with violating double jeopardy by adjudicating the case all over again when the first outcome is in favor of the accused. Its OK in Trumps America to expect due process and a fair hearing when youre accused of a campus sex offense after your drunken hookup of the night before leads to hurt feelings.

Signed Welfare Reform Requiring Able

The Trump administration released guidance in January 2018 that lets states take away Medicaid coverage from people who arent working or engaged in work-related activities. Tens of thousands of people have been affected. For instance, in Arkansas over 18,000 Medicaid beneficiaries lost coverage in 2018, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Trump Has Consolidated Antidemocratic Forces Control Of The Republican Party

Many Republicans still believe in democratic norms such as the rule of law, the centrality of truth, the peaceful transfer of power, and the legitimacy of the opposition party. But Trump is not among those Republicans, and he has won astonishing acquiescence and support from his party as he has set about trashing democratic norms and principles. In The Atlanticthree years ago, Benjamin Wittes and I warned that the Republican Party, as an institution, had become a danger to the rule of law and the integrity of our democracy. Thereafter, Trump only escalated his assaults on democratic norms.

Now, however, he has pushed even deeper into illiberal territory, spuriously attacking the legitimacy of the election. In doing so, he has won the support of many of the partys federal officeholders and the silence of the large majority of the rest. Just a handful of Republican senators, Mitt Romney most impressively, have found the backbone to call him out.

Trump has placed himself explicitly in the teleocratic camp. Teleocracy is incompatible with democracy and the rule of law Trumps position would once have horrified Republicans. Now, by acquiescing to Trump, they have made it their de facto creed. By contrast, although prominent Democrats questioned the legitimacy of Trumps election in 2016 and George W. Bushs in 2000, Democratic leaders generally adhere to nomocratic tenets, and none has come remotely as unmoored from them as Trump has.

When He Separated Migrant Children From Their Parents

Of the many scandalous things that Trump has done in his presidency, the separation of children from the parents at his controversial detention facilities at the US/Mexico border was probably the worst.

Evidence had emerged of migrant children literally being placed in cages at the facility, something which Trump tried to blame Barack Obama for. In June 2019, Trump official Marsha Brown even tried to argue that said children didnt need to be safe and sanitary.

Failure: Family Separations And The Deaths Of Migrant Children

Trump in 2016 campaigned on reducing undocumented immigration, pledging to take a hardline approach.

He made good on that promise when coming into office, but was accused of human-rights abuses and violating international law by the UN.

The Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy on illegal border crossings led to the separations of at least 5,500 families and saw children placed in cages.

The president of the American Academy of Pediatrics at the time described the practice as “nothing less than government-sanctioned child abuse.”

After widespread backlash, Trump issued an executive order in June 2018 to halt the family separations, and a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to reunite all those it had separated. But the fallout from the separations is ongoing.

Trump falsely blamed his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, for the policy that saw thousands of children separated from their parents.

At least six migrant children died in US custody, leading to widespread condemnation of conditions in detention facilities.

The UN human-rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, in July 2019 said she was “shocked” by the US government’s treatment of migrant children and the conditions they faced in detention facilities after crossing the border from Mexico.
