Super Tuesday: Bernie Sanders Still Confident He Can Beat Trump

WASHINGTON Bernie Sanders is predicting victory in Texas not only in the Democratic primary but in Novembers general election.

The Vermont senator adopted the tone of a candidate who has already secured the nomination before thousands of cheering supporters who filled a basketball arena on the campus of the University of Houston on Sunday.

Referring to supporters of President Donald Trump, Sanders said, Dont tell anybody because these folks get very agitated and nervous before continuing, We are going to win here.

Sanders meant during the primarys Super Tuesday on March 3, but also said in November were going to defeat Trump here.

Sanders said Texas maybe more than any other state has the possibility of transforming this country since on television, they say Texas is a conservative state, its a red state. I dont believe it for a minute.

The senator said if working class, black and Hispanics Texans come out to vote, were going to win.

He also called Trump a bully and a vindictive person who cant even get along with the people who he appoints.

Tennessee Extends Voting In Several Locations After Tornado Damage

A Davidson County judge Tuesday afternoon ruled that Tennessee polls can remain open until 8 p.m. CT at all sites across Nashville.

Polls were originally set to close at 8 p.m. ET. Five polling sites will remain open until 11 p.m. ET.

The ruling came at the request of four of the top Democratic presidential campaigns, along with the Tennessee Democratic Party. The groups filed suit in a Nashville court on Tuesday to extend poll times amid heavy tornado damage throughout the city. A voting-rights group had also urged Tennessee to extend Tuesdays primary voting in areas damaged by tornadoes.

Tornadoes killed at least 22 people and shredded at least 140 buildings amid violent storms ranging from Texas to North Carolina. A tornado cut a swatch of destruction through Nashville.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee declared a state of emergency. President Donald Trump said he would visit the region Friday to review damage from the very vicious tornadoes.

Kristen Clarke, president of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, part of a consortium monitoring election security on Tuesday, urged Lee, Secretary of State Tre Hargett and elections coordinator Mark Goins to extend the period for voting.

It is critical that all voters be provided a fair and full opportunity to vote, Clarke said. That is not possible for people in those parts of Tennessee that have been devastated by the tornado.

Virginia Vermont First To Close Polls

First up on this Super Tuesday: Vermont and Virginia.

Those two contests one potentially competitive, the other probably not closed at 7 p.m.

Results will take hours to come in, and sometimes projections will as well. But in other instances, the winner could be called quickly. In South Carolina, one network called former Vice President Joe Biden the winner based on exit polling seconds before the voting was over. Another called it the second polls closed.

Vermont is the home state of Sen. Bernie Sanders, giving him a significant home-field advantage.

Virginia is a state where Biden has spent a significant amount of time, and his success or failure there could be an early indicator of whether his South Carolina win was a one-off or a sign of new momentum.

Thirty minutes later, another key state closes: Alabama. Thats another close contest where Bidens recent success in South Carolina could be a factor.

Then a large wave of states come in at 8 p.m.: Alabama, Maine, Massachusetts and Oklahoma. Tennessee had planned to close at 8 p.m. but some voting locations will stay open longer because of the deadly storms that hit the state early Tuesday.

The last state to close is California, where voting will wrap up at 11 p.m. EST. It could take days for the results in that state, however, as many voters have mailed their ballots.

Bernie Sanders Comes Closest To Beating Trump In Texas New Poll Says

President Donald Trump may still be leading the political polls in Texas, but data released Wednesday show Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is actually the biggest threat to Trump winning the state, although former Vice President Joe Biden is still the current Democratic front runner in Texas.

Polling by the non-partisan organization, the Texas Lyceum, showed that in a trial presidential election ballot, Sanders held 47 percent to Trump’s 50 percent. When Biden was put up against the president in a hypothetical matchup, Biden scored 46 percent to Trump’s 51 percent.

Biden did, however, pick up the win for the overall poll as 28 percent of potential Democratic voters in the Texas primary supported Biden. Sanders came in second place with 26 percent while Senator Elizabeth Warren came in a distant third place with 13 percent, a full 13 points behind Sanders.

Newsweek reached out to the Sanders campaign for comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.

Rounding out the top five were billionaire Michael Bloomberg with 9 percent and former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg with 6 percent.

Trump lost the 2016 Texas Republican primary to Texas Senator Ted Cruz by a wide margin. Cruz wound up with almost 44 percent of the vote while Trump came in second with only 26.7 percent. But after Cruz’s popularity spiraled, culminating in a defeat in the Indiana primary, Cruz suspended his campaign.

There are a lot of things I thought I would never see happen in Texas politics. Just to pick a few across a vast and varied spectrum: Ann Richardss election to the governorship in 1990 seemed miraculous a sign that Texas had turned a corner and was finally heading in a progressive direction. Of course it didnt, as we saw with her successor George W. Bush and his ascendancy to the presidency in the 2000 election, a step in a different direction but no less surprising to those who had seen, up close and personal, his pretty confounding lack of gravitas.

State Senator Wendy Davis in pink running shoes giving the anti-abortion boys in the Legislature what-for with her 2013 filibuster was another this cant be happening moment. Some jolts have come on a micro scale, as when I recently learned that a group of liberal friends in Austin occasionally had breakfast with Karl Rove. A master builder of Republican dominance in Texas and elsewhere has transitioned from Evil Genius to Wise Man.

That last statement may be the least surprising of 2020.

Biden Continues Southern Streak With A Win In Alabama

Joe Biden continued his surge in the Southern states on Tuesday, racking up another victory in Alabama after he was earlier declared the winner in North Carolina, which has 110 delegates on offer, and Virginia, which has 99 delegates.

The former vice president was forecasted for an overwhelming win Alabama, which has 52 delegates, according to an analysis by FiveThirtyEight. In 2016 Hillary Clinton defeated current frontrunner Sen. Bernie Sanders by more than 55 points in the Cotton State, where 54% of African Americans made up the primary electorate. Her commanding lead suggested the race was Biden’s to lose this time around.

Biden has argued he’s the best placed Democrat to mobilize black voters at the polls, and proved his campaign strategy by winning the primary in the diverse state of South Carolina on Feb. 29. He won 48.4% of the vote and picked up 39 delegates in the Palmetto State. Sanders earned 15 delegates with 19.9% of the vote.

North Carolina To Delay Results

North Carolina election officials voted unanimously to extend voting by 40 minutes on Tuesday.

The extension will also likely mean the delay of official results in the state’s primary until 8:10 p.m. It’s not clear whether cable news networks will announce projections or hold off until polls close.

North Carolina, which announced the delay on Twitter, had been scheduled to be the next state to close after Virginia and Vermont, at 7:30 p.m.

Biden Faces A Big Super Tuesday Test With Latino Voters

Joe Bidens chances of staying competitive with Bernie Sanders after Super Tuesday may rest on whether he can broaden his support with Hispanic voters who have so far gravitated overwhelmingly toward the Vermont senator.

In California and Texas, the two biggest prizes in the bonanza of Super Tuesday contests, about 30% of eligible voters are Latino.

Recent polls taken before Bidens big win in South Carolina Saturday show Sanders has nearly three times the support among Latino Democrats in California as Biden and a 12 percentage-point lead over Biden with Latino Democrats in Texas.

Biden’s Super Tuesday test:Biden faces big test with Latino voters on Super Tuesday as he seeks to cut into Sanders’ strength

Sanders is going to get a delegate lead. Its just a question of how much, said Kyle Kondik, an analyst at the University of Virginias Center for Politics. If Biden can accumulate support and prevent Sanders support among Hispanics from going up as candidates drop out, then it becomes more doable.

After Strong Finishes In Iowa And New Hampshire Sanders Hopes To Win Texas

Dem voters: Bernie Sanders Can Beat Trump And ‘Republican Decoy’ Bloomberg | MSNBC

By Gromer Jeffers Jr.

9:12 PM on Feb 14, 2020 CST

MESQUITE Bernie Sanders on Friday said he will win Texas on the strength of a multigenerational movement, and then oust President Donald Trump from the White House.

Were going to win the state of Texas,” Sanders told several thousand supporters in Mesquite. Were going to beat Trump. Were going to transform this country.

Sanders said Trump had steered the nation off course and continued to be a flawed president.

We cannot have a president who continues to be a pathological liar, Sanders said.

More than 4,000 people gathered at the Mesquite rodeo arena to hear Sanders, who is riding high after strong finishes in the early contest states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

The Texas presidential primary is March 3, and a win here could cement Sanders as the Democratic Partys front-runner for the nomination against Trump.

Sanders sought to assure voters that his progressive policies were nothing to fear. Rivals have warned that the nomination a self-described Democratic socialist against Trump would lead to certain defeat. He said that was a sign that his campaign is resonating.

The establishment is getting very nervous, Sanders said. He said that his campaign is not just about beating Trump, but taking on the Democratic Party establishment and the greed of powerful corporations what he called the “billionaire class.

At the rally, Sanders said, this country belongs to all of us, not just the one percent.

What Texas Democrats Value

While many Hispanic officeholders in Texas have endorsed other candidates, Sanders focus on lessening the countrys economic divide appeals to many Latinos. And thats not just the young, interviews with poll respondents suggest.

Richard Méndez, 70, a retired El Paso mail carrier, said rich Americans wealth keeps piling up, and theyre not even doing anything.

Still, Sanders should stop talking about being a democratic socialist, Méndez said.

Hes just going to give ammunition to that other guy to win the election, he said, referring to President Donald Trump.

But Im still going to support Sanders all the way, Méndez said. Hes going to give Medicare for everybody and would forgive student loans and all the good things like that more help for the people.

Fears that Sanders might not be able to win in November, though, drive others into Biden and Bloombergs arms.

I think Bernies great. Really, honestly, said registered nurse Joyce Chan, 41, of Houston, whos backing Biden. Im just a little worried that wont be able to beat Trump. I just want a good, strong candidate that will have a really good chance of beating Trump.

Retired oil and gas production foreman Tommy Henderson of Odessa, a Bloomberg backer, said hed like to see more free community college programs that put people to work, but not Sanders free college for all.

Asked why hes not for the incumbent, whos also a businessman, Henderson replied,

A Possible Warning Sign For Bloomberg

Todays voters are the first to weigh in on the campaign of former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg who has spent a record amount of his own money trying to get the Democratic nomination.

In a potentially bad sign for him, about half the Democratic primary voters in Texas and Tennessee said its unfair that candidates can spend unlimited amounts of their own money on their campaigns, according to early results from the NBC News Exit poll.

Tom Steyer, the other billionaire who wanted to be president, dropped out Saturday after getting no delegates in South Carolina despite outspending the field there.

Bloomberg did not compete in the first four states. Hes acknowledged that the best he can do is get a plurality not a majority of delegates. If no candidates gets a majority during the nominating contests, the winner will be determined at the convention.

I dont think I can win any other way, Bloomberg told reporters in Florida today.

Bernie Sanders Surges In Texas While Trump Is Under

AUSTIN, Texas — U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders has doubled his support among Democratic voters in Texas and now leads the race for that partys presidential nomination in Texas, according to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll.

Sanders had the support of 24% of the self-identified Democratic primary voters in the poll, up from 12% in October. Sanders passed both former Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the two leaders in the . Early voting in the Texas primaries starts on Tuesday election day Super Tuesday is March 3.

The field of candidates has changed since the earlier survey. Beto ORourke, who was third in October, has dropped out of the race. And Michael Bloomberg, who entered the contest late, landed fourth in the newest poll, ahead of Pete Buttigieg and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the second- and third-place finishers in this weeks New Hampshire primary. Warren finished fourth in that contest, with Biden fifth.

Andrew Yang, who dropped out of the presidential race this week, was behind Buttigieg and ahead of Klobuchar in the latest UT/TT Poll.

Most of the movement has been Sanders and Bloomberg, with Biden still, said Joshua Blank, research director for the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin. To be unable to increase his vote share is pretty telling for Biden.
