Mitt Romney Calls Donald Trump ‘900lb Gorilla In The Republican Party’

  • Utah senator and 2012 candidate says GOP won policy battle

Donald Trump, stewing at the White House, reportedly approached by Jared Kushner about conceding the election but as yet unmoved, is the 900lb gorilla when it comes to the Republican party, Utah senator and 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said on Sunday.

The presidential election was called for Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate, on Saturday, when Pennsylvania moved into his electoral college column four days after the vote.

Trump, who responded with defiance and by playing golf will have an enormous impact on our party going forward, Romney told NBCs Meet the Press.

I believe the great majority of people who voted for Donald Trump want to make sure that his principles and his policies are pursued. So yeah, hes not disappearing by any means. Hes the 900lb gorilla when it comes to the Republican party.

Romney is a relative moderate in Trumps party and a relatively independent voice he was the only Republican senator to vote for impeachment but he also voted to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the supreme court with unprecedented and many say unseemly haste.

The presidential race, he said on Sunday, considering Republican victories in congressional, state and local elections, was more a matter of a referendum on a person. And that when it came to policy, we did pretty well.

Did Mitt Romney Test Positive For Coronavirus No Hes Taking Pre

Sen. Mitt Romney speaks as he attends a Senate GOP lunch meeting on Capitol Hill

Earlier on Sunday, Senator Rand Paul confirmed he had tested positive for COVID-19 on Twitter. The statement read, He is feeling fine and is in quarantine. He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events. He was not aware of any direct contact with any infected person.

He expects to be back in the Senate after his quarantine period ends and will continue to work for the people of Kentucky at this difficult time. Ten days ago, our D.C. office began operating remotely, hence virtually no staff has had contact with Senator Rand Paul.

In response to this news, Senator Mitt Romney, who joined Paul during the Senates GOP lunch on Friday, said he was very unhappy to hear of his friends diagnosis. Hes compromised, given health conditions hes had in the past, so well be praying for him and thinking about him.

Later that day, Romney announced hed be going into self-quarantine, with his official statement on the matter shared on Twitter.

Senator Romneys office issued the following statement:

Romneys fellow Utah Senator, Mike Lee, also announced hes enterting self-quarantine. Joining him after Paul tested positive for COVID-19 was Florida Senator Rick Scott, and Republican Colorado Sentor Cory Gardner.

Donald Trump Interviewed Mitt Romney To Torture Him Roger Stone Says

Spencer Platt/Getty

Donald Trumps long-time but informal adviser Roger Stone says the Secretary of State job was dangled in front of Mitt Romney in order to torture him for previously opposing the president-elect.

During a Sunday appearance on InfoWars with Alex Jones, a conspiratorial media outlet that has become a mouthpiece of the next president, Stone called Romney a choker and said that Trump was simply toying with him.

Donald Trump was interviewing Mitt Romney for Secretary of State in order to torture him, Stone claimed on the program. To toy with him. And given the history, thats completely understandable. Mitt Romney crossed a line. He didnt just oppose Trump, which is his democratic right, he called him a phony and a fraud. And a con man. And thats not the kind of man you want as Secretary of State.

Stones involvement with the current transition efforts is unclear as he is not formally advising Trump. But the two men have kept a close relationship for years and Stone claims that he was at Trump Tower last week. The transition team did not respond to a request for confirmation about his presence from The Daily Beast.

Well, you know Trump correctly said he was a choker, Stone said in the interview, and at the key moment in the campaign against Barack Obama he choked. Donald Trump is not a choker, in fact, hes a scratch golfer. So in this particular case, Trump did what Romney couldnt.

It all depends on who has Trumps ear last.

Romney: Trump Is ‘guilty Of An Appalling Abuse Of Public Trust’

Mitt Romney impeachment vote approved by voters 50%

Wednesday, the president tweeted an ad depicting Romney as a Democratic “secret asset.” Recalling Romney’s loss to President Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election, Trump tweeted early Thursday that if the “failed presidential candidate” had “devoted the same energy and anger to defeating a faltering Barack Obama as he sanctimoniously does to me, he could have won the election.”

Speaking with The New York Times podcast “The Daily,” Romney said he expects “unimaginable” consequences for his vote, adding that he does not yet know what they will be.

“My personal and political and team affiliation made me very much not want to convict,” he said. “I mean, I want to be with my colleagues in the Senate. I don’t want to be the skunk at the garden party. I don’t want to have the disdain of Republicans across the country.”

Perhaps the strongest criticism was leveled by Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., which was amplified by his tightknit circle of conservative allies. Trump Jr. tweeted that Romney is “forever bitter he will never be” president, calling him “too weak to beat the Democrats then so he’s joining them now.”

Utah Gop Accepts Romney’s Vote To Convict Trump

The state party said there is “power” in difference of opinions.

Republicans face backlash for voting with Democrats to convict Trump

The Utah Republican Party released a statement Tuesday accepting the opposite votes cast by Sens. Mitt Romney and Mike Lee at last week’s impeachment trial of former president Donald Trump, unlike other GOP state parties that have censured fellow Republicans.

Romney voted to convict Trump, as he did in his first impeachment, while Lee voted not guilty.

“Our senators have both been criticized for their vote. The differences between our own Utah Republicans showcase a diversity of thought, in contrast to the danger of a party fixated on ‘unanimity of thought,'” the statement said. “There is power in our differences as a political party, and we look forward to each senator explaining their votes to the people of Utah.”

The statement called disagreement in the party “natural and healthy” based on principles. It also stressed that they did not want to look toward the past or be “punitive,” and instead hoped to be optimistic and forward-looking.

Many of the seven GOP senators who voted that the trial was constitutional or to convict Trump were treated similar to the way Utah’s GOP responded.

Trump opened his remarks at the event by railing against the recently concluded impeachment process, taking an unmistakable jab at Romney, who voted to convict Trump one impeachment charge, and Pelosi, who was seated just a few feet away. When he entered the room, Trump held up newspapers emblazoned with headlines announcing his acquittal.

Romney voted on Wednesday convict Trump for abuse of power, and Pelosi, one of the president’s chief foils, launched the impeachment inquiry in September.

Romney Predicts Trump Would Win The 2024 Gop Nomination If He Ran For President

By Thomas Kaplan

Senator Mitt Romney of Utah said on Tuesday that he believed Donald J. Trump would win the Republican nomination for president if he ran for his former office in 2024, another indication of Mr. Trumps perceived strength in the party.

I dont know if hell run in 2024 or not, but if he does, Im pretty sure he will win the nomination, Mr. Romney said at the DealBook DC Policy Project.

Mr. Romney noted that a lot can happen between now and 2024, but he added, I look at the polls, and the polls show that among the names being floated as potential contenders in 2024, if you put President Trump in there among Republicans, he wins in a landslide.

Mr. Romney, the Republican presidential nominee in 2012, is the sole Republican senator who voted to convict Mr. Trump at both of his impeachment trials.

Asked by The New York Timess Andrew Ross Sorkin whether he would campaign against Mr. Trump, Mr. Romney responded: I would not be voting for President Trump again. I havent voted for him in the past. And I would probably be getting behind somebody who I thought more represented the tiny wing of the Republican Party that I represent.

Mr. Romneys comments were a clear sign of Mr. Trumps enduring position in the Republican Party, even after his election defeat last year and his impeachment on a charge of inciting the assault on the Capitol on Jan. 6.

He has by far the largest voice and a big impact in my party, Mr. Romney said.

Romneys Recent Tension With President Trump

Its no secret. Senator Romney and President Trump havent always agreed on policy and leadership. Romney has been increasingly vocal about the presidents politics, even voting for his impeachment in 2019.

However, most recently, Romney has spoken out against President Trumps rhetoric surrounding the upcoming election and elected representatives.

The president calls the Democratic vice president a monster he repeatedly labels the speaker of the House crazy he calls for the Justice Department to put the prior president in jail he attacks the governor of Michigan on the very day a plot is discovered to kidnap her, Romney wrote in a social media post.

Romney also criticized the president for not committing to a peaceful transfer of power if he were to lose the election. The Utah senator expressed his concern for the comment made by the president on Twitter.

Fundamental to democracy is the peaceful transition of power without that, there is Belarus. Any suggestion that a president might not respect this Constitutional guarantee is both unthinkable and unacceptable, tweeted Romney.

The story is breaking and will be updated.
