On April 18, 2017, President Trump signed the Buy American and Hire American Executive Order, which seeks to create higher wages and employment rates for U.S. workers and to protect their economic interests by rigorously enforcing and administering our immigration laws. It also directs DHS, in coordination with other agencies, to advance policies to help ensure H-1B visas are awarded to the most-skilled or highest-paid beneficiaries.

USCIS is working on a combination of rulemaking, policy memoranda, and operational changes to implement the Buy American and Hire American Executive Order. We are creating and carrying out these initiatives to protect the economic interests of U.S. workers and prevent fraud and abuse within the immigration system.

On July 26, 2017, over 760 callers participated in our first listening session on the Buy American and Hire American Executive Order to protect American workers and strengthen the American economy. We heard from many stakeholders who have experienced up-close how immigration policy directly affects working people. Their suggestions captured a wide range of diverse opinions and viewpoints, but every caller expressed the need to continue improving the integrity of our immigration system, a call for action that we are actively answering.

There is a sign that has become ubiquitous on the lawns of Democrats who have lawns. In This House, We Believe, the sign begins, followed by a stack of progressive maxims listed in capital letters. The classic version reads: Black Lives Matter / Womens Rights Are Human Rights / No Human Is Illegal / Science Is Real / Love Is Love. Then the kicker: Kindness Is Everything.

When the yard sign first appeared, in the wake of the 2016 election, I barely noticed it. That era had produced such an exhausting array of ironic paraphernalia that a placard of earnest liberal word salad hardly registered as a rich text. But over the past five years, as the sign spread across the suburbs, I found myself seduced by its chaotic jumble of typefaces, its lifestyle-blog-adjacent aesthetic, its sanctimonious final line and its curious staying power.

Trump Street Starts A Bitter Fight Over Political Signs And Much More In The Alaska Town Of Eagle

Signs in Eagle, Alaska, 2020.

The trouble in Eagle started in June, when Jefferson Street became Trump Street.

Some in the Yukon River community in Alaskas eastern Interior liked the name change. Others did not, and said the city government had acted illegally in allowing the sign.

All summer, a political sign battle raged in this tiny corner of Alaska. Trump has been spray painted on groves of aspen and spruce trees. Signs have been torn down. There have been public recriminations on Facebook. Both sides have accused the other of vandalism and intimidation.

The political divisions in Eagle arent much different from those in communities all over the country on the eve of a presidential election, a time of polarization and unrest, in the midst of an ongoing global pandemic.

Eagle is a hamlet of fewer than 100 people on a bend of the Yukon River, just a few miles from the Canadian border. The Gwichin community of Eagle Village is situated about 7 miles up the river.

The town is remote, even by Alaska Bush standards. Big box stores in Fairbanks are a nine- or 10-hour drive away during the summer, the only time when a road link exists via the Taylor Highway. The state stops maintaining the road in October, and the town becomes a fly-in-only community.

The area has always attracted people who chiefly want to be left alone to live as they please, said Mary Morris, a jeweler and former school secretary who has lived in Eagle since 1980.

I Think Donald Trump Is Gods Right Arm

Two decades ago, David Small floated the Yukon River from Whitehorse all the way to Emmonak near the Bering Sea coast. He stopped through Eagle on his way and decided it was the place for him. He says he was impressed by its tidiness and the way people treated one another.

I spent years and decades actually traveling around the world and I found the best place ever, said Small, a U.S. Navy veteran and former oceangoing sailor.

It was Small who came up with the idea to make Jefferson Street into Trump Street.

Small says he is not a member of a political party. Some of the political issues most important to him, such as abolishing daylight saving time, dont come up much in mainstream politics.

He says he appreciates Trump because of his support of the Second Amendment, among other attributes.

I really believe in the fact that God has big plans for America, big plans, and good plans, said Small. I think Donald Trump is Gods right arm.

Other streets in town are already named after presidents Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Lincoln. Why not, he thought, honor the current president by renaming his own street. Small said he asked the only other family living on Jefferson Street and the city council for permission and got the OK.

Small made the new Trump Street sign himself, following the black and white stenciled design of the existing sign.

He acknowledges that Trump is a polarizing figure.

Some people didnt much notice it, or mind. Others, like her, were outraged.

How Georgia Gov Kemp Rebounded After Trump Nearly Destroyed Him

When Drew and Marlene Proctor left their Jersey Shore, Pa., home to take their three-week trip across the back roads of the country for their honeymoon, they relished different sightings all along their journey.

But one thing remained constant no matter what state, city, town or village they passed through, Drew said, and that was the amount of Trump signs we saw everywhere.

And I mean everywhere, he added for emphasis. They were in wealthy suburban neighborhoods, blue-collar middle-class towns. You would see them in farm fields and painted on the sides of businesses. Most of them were either large flags, although plenty of them were hand-painted homemade signs too.

In total, the couple traveled through 12 states and logged more than 5,000 miles on their sojourn. I spoke with both Proctors last month as they sat outside a diner, enjoying a burger near Mt. Rushmore in Keystone, SD. As if on cue, a motorcyclist drove by with a Trump flag billowing out the back.

Drew, 47, said people who didnt vote for Trump and regularly fly over these states might be surprised or even shocked by the show of support for the former president who lost to Joe Biden last fall.

Worse, he said, they might mistake the display as cultish.

Those assumptions would be wrong, said Drew, who is a service manager for a European industrial machining company.

Trump was the consequence of peoples sentiments, he was not the cause.

They Kept Stealing His Trump Sign So One Trump Supporter Did This

Arthur Gonsalves is an avid Donald Trump supporter. The Massachusetts man had several homemade Trump signs stolen from his yard. Fed up with it, he decided to fight back. But he got an unexpected response.

To deter the sign thieves, Gonsalves taped an black box with wires that said Danger on to one of his signs. The sign also said Booby trap.

Gonsalves succeeded in the fact that the signs werent stolen. But the police showed up, as The Eagle Tribune reported. The bomb squad was also called.

Police set up a perimeter around the house, closed Jenkins Road, and called the state bomb squad. That last call was cancelled, however, when they heard Gonsalves story. The black device with white tape and dangling wires was an old stereo equalizer. Thats all, he explained. He dug it out after two handmade Trump signs were stolen about two weeks ago from his property. To deter the vandals, Gonsalves attached the box to one of two posts at the ends of a long sign with Trump painted across it in big red letters. He attached a flag to the other post.

Gonsalves, who has lived in the home since 1970, reports that the signs he posted for Ronald Reagan in the 1980s were also stolen.

Measure Would Extend Government Funding For A Week To Prevent Shutdown While 5593

President Donald Trump signed into a seven-day stopgap funding measure Monday night that was designed to avoid the risk of a government shutdown over Christmas.

The Senate, on a voice vote, had cleared the continuing resolution to extend current funding for a week, even though Congress was in the process of passing a mammoth spending measure funding all federal agencies through next September, along with nearly $900 billion in coronavirus relief.

The spending Band-Aid Trump signed gives Congress extra time to process the 5,593-page omnibus without any shutdown risk. The House had approved the stopgap earlier Monday as part of a procedural rule on the omnibus measure. That rule was approved on a mostly party-line vote of 227-180.

While the omnibus measure cleared Congress late Monday night, extra time would be needed to get the final legislation printed and signed by House and Senate officials, then packaged and delivered to Trumps desk. It wasn’t clear that Trump would have had time to sign that voluminous measure by midnight Monday, when the most recent stopgap funding was set to run dry.

Computer glitches with uploading the omnibus legislative text files also delayed the bill’s release Monday morning, contributing to the timing uncertainty.

Under the House procedural maneuver, adoption of the rule for floor debate on the big spending package would automatically send the new stopgap bill to the Senate, which would take it up later on Monday.
