In a succession of tweets on March 4, 2017, Trump stated he had “just found out” that his predecessor Obama had wiretapped the phones in his offices at Trump Tower during the last months of the 2016 election. Trump did not say where he had obtained the information and offered no evidence to support it. Trump compared the alleged intrusion to McCarthyism and Watergate. Anonymous White House officials told The Washington Post that Trump did not appear to coordinate his comments with other White House officials.
Although no evidence supported Trump’s claims, the tweets resulted in a week of media attention. Fake news websites also took up the allegations, and one falsely claimed that a warrant for Obama’s arrest had been given.

Grygiel, the Syracuse professor, believes that letting Trump back on Twitter isn’t so much about free speech as it is about Musk’s controlling behavior.
“Its his prerogative. He can set his policies the way he wants to,” Grygiel notes. “I said when Trump was first de-platformed it would be that way as long as the owners of Twitter wanted to, and if Musk owns Twitter, it means everything can be renegotiated.”
Another social media expert, Karen North, a professor at the University of Southern California, says she agrees with Musk’s perspective about Trump.
“There are two sides to it. When Trump was banned, it suggested to people that what he says is so meaningful and important that we must become protected from it,” she tells USA TODAY. “Musk believes its better to have the voices heard than to give them more power by silencing them.
But she acknowledges returning a megaphone to someone accused of inciting insurrection comes with risks of its own.
“The other edge of that sword is the voice is there for the broader public and what harms that may happen,” North says.

In the tweets posted recently, the former US President bashed Rep. Liz Cheney and supported the reelection candidate Rep. Madison Cawthorn . He also posted a picture of himself sitting on a throne with a crown.

After the Twitter ban on the former president, Truth Social was created as a social media platform encouraging free speech and freedom of ideas. Twitter has had rigid policies, but Trump has defied the policy time and time again using his paid aide Liz Harrington’s account, Yahoo reported.
Trump promised to wait six hours before posting a message from Truth Social to other platforms, as long as it doesn’t involve politics.
Twitter Permanently Suspends President Donald Trump
Twitter permanently suspended President Donald Trumps account on Friday, citing the risk of further incitement of violence.
The presidents account, with 88 million followers, was initially banned for 12 hours on Wednesday due to severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy, after he used the platform to condemn Vice President Mike Pence as his supporters stormed the Capitol.
Almost immediately, the account that Trump had used for years to convey his every thought, to denounce his enemies and praise his friends, to convey uncountable false statements and official White House announcements, simply disappeared. It was suddenly impossible to see his previous tweets, or even to see his reaction to Twitter’s decision. Instead, his empty account had been marked: “Account suspended.”
Trump’s attempts to tweet from associated accounts also were blocked. At one point, he was tweeting from his campaign account, but that was promptly suspended.
In a blog post, Twitter detailed the reasoning behind the decision.
In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action, Twitter wrote. Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. Mr. Trumps Twitter post in the early hours of Dec. 19, 2020, was the first time he publicly urged supporters to come to Washington on the day Congress was scheduled to certify the Electoral College results showing Joseph R. When asked about Musks comments, White House press secretary Jen Psaki noted that Twitter is a private-sector company that will decide who will and wont be allowed on its platforms.
Freedom of speech should be protected, she said, but social media platforms should not be used as forums to spread disinformation. We have seen a history of that, not just on Twitter but also on Facebook, she said.
President Biden believes more needs to be done to reform Section 230, which protects tech companies from being sued for the content users post on their sites, Psaki said. Musks remarks may be a reminder of the urgency of doing that, she said.

Trump has been criticized for his practice of retweeting or copying material from social media accounts posting antisemitic, racist, or false information, such as claims exaggerating the number of crimes committed by black people.

PolitiFact singled out as particularly obviously false an image retweeted by Trump that claimed that 81% of white murder victims are killed by black people. Politifact noted that, besides being a five-fold exaggeration, the claim was sourced to the non-existent “Crime Statistics Bureau, San Francisco” it later highlighted this retweet when awarding its 2015 “Lie of the Year” badge to Trump’s entire presidential campaign. The fake statistics were first posted by a neo-Nazi Twitter account.

Donald Trumps potential return to Twitter could bring a whole new minefield for Elon Musk to navigate.
Musk, who has struck a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion, said this week that he will lift its permanent suspension of the former president part of a pledge to restore free speech to the social media platform. But Musk also held out the possibility of temporarily suspending people who post content thats illegal, directly incites violence or is otherwise destructive to the world.
Trumps critics say his past tweets crossed that line repeatedly and if Twitter lets him return, his flagrant disregard of the social networks rules will become Musks headache.
For years, Trump used his favorite social media megaphone to insult his opponents, hurl racially or ethnically tinged rhetoric, spread misinformation about topics like elections and public health, and threaten violence against targets such as civil rights protesters and North Korea. That was long before following his praise of the rioters who attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The tweets available Monday included 210 messages Trump has posted on Truth Social since February, which are now also tailored to Twitter. Each tweet pleads: Please Follow and Retweet.
The new account is only for Trumps messages on Truth Social and others he has chosen to retruth.

Trump was permanently banned from Twitter in 2021 for his role in last years attack on the U.S. Capitol. Potential new Twitter owner Elon Musk has indicated he would let Trump back on the platform, but its uncertain if Musk will finalize the purchase deal.
Twitter has a policy prohibiting banned users from dodging restrictions by utilizing other profiles to post messages. But Trump routinely defies the policy by posting messages on the . Now there are two Twitter accounts with his posts.
Twitter did not return a request for comment from HuffPost about the work-around.
