On policy, there is no question that Donald Trump is the most pro-Israel, pro-Jewish candidate to ever run for the U.S. presidency. And this years Republican Party platform is the most pro-Israel political platform in the history of the United States, on either side of the political aisle. That is why when Jewish and pro-Israel voters learn about Donald Trumps policies, they support Donald Trump. Lets examine the evidence and look at other ties that bond Mr. Trump to Israel and the Jewish people.

Protecting Pro-Israel College Students

Donald Trump’s presidency provides few moments of tranquility. But last week, amid roaring controversies that threaten her father’s administration, Ivanka Trump took in a quiet moment of prayer and reflection at the Western Wall, one of the holiest sites in Judaism.

Her visit was striking for two reasons. It was a rare moment in which the First Daughter’s carefully guarded faith was on public display. And it underscored the unique role she plays in an administration that has faced criticism for not confronting anti-Semitism.

Ivanka is arguably the most powerful Jewish woman in America today, someone who has long had a special influence on her father and is now settling in as an unpaid adviser to the President. Her commitment to faith contrasts with Trump, whose outward religious practice has been much more limited. But one question looming over Ivanka is how — or whether — she will use her status at the top of the new Washington to guide a national conversation about the rising number of threats to Jewish community centers and places of worship.

So far, she’s taking a characteristically cautious approach.

Since her move to Washington at the beginning of the Trump administration, Ivanka has spoken little about her faith or her conversion to Judaism before she married Jared Kushner, an Orthodox Jew, in 2009. She declined to speak to CNN about how her faith guides her life and her thinking about policy. Both she and her aides describe it as an intensely personal matter.

How Presidents Have Spoken About The Jewish People Has Changed Over Time

Both Presidents Reagan and Truman were the most likely to reference Jewish immigrants or refugees followed by Bush , Obama, and Carter. Reagans role in acknowledging Jewish oppression in the Soviet Union was established as early as 1983 and his administration was seen as a vital ally. After his death in 2004, journalist Ron Kampeas noted that Reagans presidency was seen by many as halcyon days for Jewish issues in foreign policy, principally because of the effects of Reagans greatest triumph: the collapse of the Soviet bloc.

Initially, we had understood this rise in mentions during the Truman administration as directly related to the Holocaust and World War II. A more likely explanation comes from the issues between Israel and Palestine, which does connect to the aftermath of World War II, but Truman does not explicitly reference the Holocaust within these communications.

Us Jews Political Views

Pew Research Center surveys, including the 2020 study, show that Jews are among the most consistently liberal and Democratic groups in the U.S. population. Seven-in-ten Jewish adults identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party, and half describe their political views as liberal.

This general inclination toward the Democratic Party and liberal values goes hand-in-hand with disapproval of former Republican President Donald Trump. In this survey, conducted roughly five to 12 months before the 2020 presidential election, nearly three-quarters of Jewish adults disapproved of the job Trump was doing as president, while just 27% rated him positively far below the 65% who approved of President Barack Obamas job performance in 2013.

Orthodox Jews, however, stand out as a small subgroup whose political profile is virtually the reverse of Jews as a whole: 60% of Orthodox Jews describe their political views as conservative, 75% identify as Republicans or lean toward the GOP, and 81% approved of Trumps job performance at the time of the survey.

Studying How Presidents Have Talked About The Jewish People

Has it always been this way? How did previous Commanders-in-Chief speak about the Jewish people? We have made an initial analysis of American presidential rhetoric and communication concerning the Jewish people. In collecting data for this research, we utilized the American Presidency Project and evaluated over two thousand available presidential communications containing the words Jew, Jews, or Jewish from 1872 onwards. As Figure 1 shows, these included press releases, interviews, toasts, proclamations, press conferences, news conferences, letters, religious messages, statements, messages, annual messages, remarks, speeches, and addresses. We collectively refer to these as communications.

The American Presidency Projects first mention of Jew/Jews/Jewish starts with President Grant in 1872. Our study analyzes that first mention all the way through the end of 2019. Figure 2 shows a gradual increase in mentions over time, with notable increases in 1946, 1980, 1999, and 2016. There is a general upward trend in overall mentions starting around 1977 and continuing to the present.

Donald Trump Talks Very Differently About The Jewish People Compared To Past Presidents

Over the last two years, President Trump has repeatedly questioned the loyalty of Jewish people in America, claiming that voting for a Democrat would be a great disloyalty. In new research which looks at nearly 150 years of presidential communications, Shyam K. Sriram, Victoria Combs and Cole McNamara look at how presidents have talked about the Jewish people over the years, and find that Trumps rhetoric is a significant departure from what has gone before.

For some, one of the more negative aspects of the Trump presidency have been his repeated statements regarding Jewish loyalty. On April 7th, 2019, he told attendees of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas, Nevada, I stood with your prime minister at the White House to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Even the Times of Israel noted that the president was appearing to conflate Jews and Israelis. Speaking at the White House on , he asked, Where has the Democratic Party gone? Where have they gone that they are defending these two people over the state of Israel? And I think any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty. The next day, President Trump told reporters referring to the group of Democratic Congressional legislators known colloquially as The Squad, which includes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, We have a group, I call it AOC plus three they are anti-Semites, they are against Israel.

President Trump Converts To Orthodox Judaism

Trumps decision comes after days of consulting with his D.C. area rabbi Rabbi Gary Busey.

President Trump announced that he will follow in his beautiful daughters footsteps and convert to Orthodox Judaism. This is an unprecedented move for a President, but he is convinced this will help ease any harsh and negative feelings toward him since the Charlottesville attack and his plethora of blunders when it comes to race relations and anti-Semitism. Timed perfectly for Hanukkah and the holiday season, Trumps decision comes after days of consulting with his D.C. area rabbi Rabbi Gary Busey.

President Trump is committed to only eating kosher food even though it means giving up his late-night fast food treats like McDonalds and taco bowl from the Trump Grill. But he is very much looking forward to gefilte fish and traditional potato stew, chulent. It is unclear whether Melania and Baron will convert as well, but President Trump is encouraging them to join him. Even if that means Melania will have to wear long skirts and wigs.

I love the Jewish people, Trump said in a statement. Last year I enjoyed a great Hanukah with the latkes and the dreidels at my amazing Mar-a-Lago, and I figured why not wear a yarmulke and just convert. I intend on making religion great again, too. Believe me.

President Trump wants to make a few things clear regarding his conversion:

1) this doesnt mean he will disavow David Duke.

2) he will still support Steve Bannon and Breitbart.

The Trump Family’s Immigrant Story

For decades, they denied their German roots, claiming to be of Scandinavian origin.

On October 7, 1885, Friedrich Trump, a 16-year-old German barber, bought a one-way ticket for America, escaping three years of compulsory German military service. He had been a sickly child, unsuited to hard labor, and feared the effects of the draft. It might have been illegal, but America didnt care about this law-breakingat that time, Germans were seen as highly desirable migrantsand Trump was welcomed with open arms. Less than two weeks later, he arrived in New York, where he would eventually make a small fortune. More than a century later, his grandson, Donald Trump, became the 45th president of Friedrichs adopted home.

But for decades, Trump denied this German heritage altogether, instead claiming that his grandfathers roots lay further north, in Scandinavia. came here from Sweden as a child, Trump asserted in his co-written book The Art of the Deal. In fact, his cousin and family historian John Walter told The New York Times, Trump maintained the ruse at the request of his own realtor father, Fred Trump, who had obfuscated his German ancestry to avoid upsetting Jewish friends and clients. After the war, Walter told the Times, hes still Swedish. was just going, going, going.

What Role Did Women Play In Ancient Rome

He married a woman from his German hometown, Kallstadt, where his parents had owned vineyards, and attempted to return home with his fortune. But when his draft dodging came to the fore, the couple lost their Bavarian citizenship and were obliged to return to America for good. There, they had three children: Trumps father, Fred, was the middle child. Born in the Bronx borough of New York City in 1905, Fred Trump was an all-American child who spoke no German. Former President Donald Trump veered into several antisemitic tropes in a recent interview, claiming that Israel used to have absolute power over Congress and saying that American Jews the majority of whom vote Democratic either dont like Israel or dont care about Israel.

Trumps comments to Israeli journalist Barak Ravid are not the first time hes used language that skews toward biased stereotypes about Jews: In 2019, the then-president said Jews who vote Democratic are being very disloyal to Israel. His most recent remarks come, however, as Republicans on Capitol Hill remain highly critical of progressive Democrats increasing support for Palestinian rights and burgeoning criticism of Israeli government policies toward Palestinians.

Trump also claimed to Ravid, who recently published a book about his administrations Abraham Accords treaties between Israel and Arab nations, that evangelical Christians in the United States love Israel more than the Jews touting a group he heavily courted in his 2016 presidential campaign and a pillar of his political base.

The former president also cited the heritage of the Sulzberger family that publishes The New York Times, which he said hates Israel.

Mr. Trump has been called to account for the discrepancy in the past, sometimes admitting it, sometimes not.
