The Youth Vote Is New But Dont Assume It Necessarily Favors A Young President

Lately, its been hard to ignore the unbearable oldness of American politics. Donald Trump, the countrys oldest first-term president at 74, was born the year the bikini was invented. Joe Biden, the 77-year-old Democratic nominee, is older thanthemicrowave. Bernie Sanders, 79, was born shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the same year you could first buy a packet of M& Ms. Two of the highest-profile women candidates for president Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren were also born in the 1940s, at least a decade before little girls started to play with Barbie dolls.

The graying of the American presidency is especially notable because our nations most visionary presidents have typically been young. Theodore Roosevelt, who became the youngest president ever at 42, had the foresight to preserve roughly 230 million acres of public land for future generations to enjoy. John F. Kennedy, inaugurated at 43 with the cry that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans, found some common cause with the civil rights movement, vowed to put a man on the moon, and started the Peace Corps to spread American values around the world. Barack Obama, who became president at 46, shielded young undocumented immigrants from deportation and committed to the Paris climate agreement, aimed at preserving the planet for future generations.

Trump Has Been Running And Losing Against Biden For Months

Ultimately, the 2020 primary issue Democrats care about most is who can stand up to Trump and beat him. Biden is in a unique position. Hes faced almost a year of attacks by Trump and it hasnt hurt him.

In the fall, the American public learned that Trump had enlisted his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani to gin up dirt on Bidens son Hunter Biden by leaning on the government of Ukraine. While these revelations ultimately ended in the presidents impeachment, they also led to months and months of Trump attacking Joe Biden.

In October, Trump really lit into him with personal insults . Trumps daughter-in-law Lara Trump and his former press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders went on to make fun of Bidens slight stutter.

Amid all this, Bidens fundraising skyrocketed, and he paid no penalty in the polls. Biden remains up over Trump in head-to-head polling in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

Why are you so obsessed with me, Mr. President?

Joe Biden

Bidens campaign made an ad about Trumps attacks, which Biden tweeted with a joke, Why are you so obsessed with me? Sometimes a joke is funny because it gets at the truth.

Us Senate Campaign In Delaware

In 1972, Biden defeated Republican incumbent J. Caleb Boggs to become the junior U.S. senator from Delaware. He was the only Democrat willing to challenge Boggs. With minimal campaign funds, he was given no chance of winning. Family members managed and staffed the campaign, which relied on meeting voters face-to-face and hand-distributing position papers, an approach made feasible by Delaware’s small size. He received help from the AFLCIO and Democratic pollster Patrick Caddell. His platform focused on the environment, withdrawal from Vietnam, civil rights, mass transit, equitable taxation, health care, and public dissatisfaction with “politics as usual”. A few months before the election, Biden trailed Boggs by almost thirty percentage points, but his energy, attractive young family, and ability to connect with voters’ emotions worked to his advantage, and he won with 50.5 percent of the vote. At the time of his election, he was still 29 years old, but reached the constitutionally required age of 30 before he was sworn in as Senator.

Biden says hed be fortunate to have Trump run against him in 2024

When Donald Trump was inaugurated in January 2017, he became the oldest ever commander in chief sworn in at the age of 70 years and 220 days old.

That was surpassed by his successor Joe Biden, who was 78 years and 61 days when he became the countrys 46th president in January 2021.

Mr Trump took the mantle as oldest ever president from Ronald Reagan, who himself was the oldest person to assume the presidency at 69 years and 349 years old at his first inauguration in 1981.

Reagan was the oldest president when he left office at the age of 77 in 1989, just 22 days away from turning 78.

If Mr Biden decides to run for the White House again he would be 81 years old on election day, 15 days away from his 82nd birthday, while Mr Trump would be 77.

Role In The 2016 Presidential Campaign

During his second term, Biden was often said to be preparing for a possible bid for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination. With his family, many friends, and donors encouraging him in mid-2015 to enter the race, and with Hillary Clinton‘s favorability ratings in decline at that time, Biden was reported to again be seriously considering the prospect and a “Draft Biden 2016″ PAC was established.

As of September 11,2015, Biden was still uncertain about running. He felt his son’s recent death had largely drained his emotional energy, and said, “nobody has a right … to seek that office unless they’re willing to give it 110% of who they are.” On October 21, speaking from a podium in the Rose Garden with his wife and Obama by his side, Biden announced his decision not to run for president in 2016. In January 2016, Biden affirmed that it was the right decision, but admitted to regretting not running for president “every day”.

After Obama endorsed Hillary Clinton on June 9, 2016, Biden endorsed her later that day. Throughout the 2016 election, Biden strongly criticized Clinton’s opponent, Donald Trump, in often colorful terms.

Death Of Wife And Daughter

On December 18, 1972, a few weeks after the election, Biden’s wife Neilia and one-year-old daughter Naomi were killed in an automobile accident while Christmas shopping in Hockessin, Delaware. Neilia’s station wagon was hit by a semi-trailer truck as she pulled out from an intersection. Their sons Beau and Hunter survived the accident and were taken to the hospital in fair condition, Beau with a broken leg and other wounds and Hunter with a minor skull fracture and other head injuries. Biden considered resigning to care for them, but Senate Majority LeaderMike Mansfield persuaded him not to.

Years later, Biden said he had heard that the truck driver allegedly drank alcohol before the collision. The driver’s family denied that claim, and the police never substantiated it. Biden later apologized to the family. The accident had filled him with anger and religious doubt. He wrote that he “felt God had played a horrible trick” on him, and he had trouble focusing on work.

Their Ages After Leaving Office In 2029

Can Biden heal America when Trump and his allies dont want it healed ...

If Biden wins the next election and manages to complete his second term, he will be 86 years old by the time he leaves office in January of 2029.

If we look at the odds, Biden has a 50% chance of living to that age.

On the other hand, if Trump retakes the White House and finishes a second term, he will be 82 in 2029. Judging by the interim life table, Trump has a 66% chance of living that long.

Biden Heading To Ohio To Spotlight Rule To Rescue Pensions

Josh Boak And Aamer Madhani

Associated Press

WASHINGTON Reassuring frustrated blue-collar voters, President Joe Biden on Wednesday is visiting Ohio to highlight federal action to shore up troubled pension funding for millions now on the job or retired.

Bidens speech at a Cleveland high school is showcasing a final rule tied to his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package from last year. The rule allows troubled multi-company pensions to be made financially whole, ensuring full benefits for 2 million to 3 million workers and retirees.

Hurt politically by inflation at a 40-year high and damage wrought by the pandemic, the president chose to deliver his message in a state that has been trending strongly Republican, with Donald Trump easily carrying it twice. This is Biden’s sixth visit as president as he labors to personally reverse that electoral tide.

Details about Bidens remarks were shared by two administration officials who insisted on anonymity to preview his speech.

The roughly 200 pension plans receiving assistance faced possible insolvency without government aid. And without the full benefits, workers and retirees could struggle to pay for housing, food and other essentials. The financial support should help keep the pension funds solvent for roughly 30 years until 2051.

That’s important, several retirees said.

Despite The Health Concerns Older Presidential Candidates Have An Advantage

Over the past couple of years, there has been plenty of discussion about the age of US presidential candidates.

More specifically, there have been worries that old age may negatively impact the abilities of a serving president.

For example, the impact of a stressful campaign on an older politician became a major topic of conversation in 2019 after Democratic Party challenger Bernie Sanders suffered a heart attack.

There is no doubt that elderly politicians find it easier to get into a position of power in the United States than other age groups.

This is because most of them have had lengthy political careers. In other words, they have been in the limelight for decades and are highly recognizable to voters.

Many voters also associate aging with characteristics such as wisdom and experience.

President Biden: Im Begging Youdont Run In 2024 Our Country Needs You To Stand Down

Recent explosive testimony from the January 6 Committee hearings has proven even further what we all already know: Donald Trump must not become president, ever again.

Which means that President Joe Biden must not run again in 2024.

Even as the country navigates the January 6 hearings, the aftermath of the mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, and a wave of controversial Supreme Court decisions including the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the basic political environment for the Democratic Party appears largely unchanged. The party seems to be careening toward a disaster in the midterms.

There is one figure in American politics who I think could shift this dynamic: President Biden. He wont do this with more speeches or press conferences or barnstorming the country. President Biden can only save the Democratsand by extension, the countryby promising that this is his final act. That is, he should announce immediately that he will not seek reelection in 2024. By doing so, I think Biden could change the political environment almost overnight.

Announcing that he wont be running accomplishes two goals. It releases candidates from the anchor he represents, tying them to a deeply unpopular president. And it allows Biden to legitimately point out that since he isnt seeking another term, decisions he makes going forward will in no way be driven by political gain.

The alternative is far less appealing.
