Whats Crowdstrike And The Server And What Is Its Role In The Ukraine Scandal
A subplot to both Trumps call with Zelensky and his broader approach to Ukraine is his apparent belief that a company called Crowdstrike has ties to Ukraine and that it possibly stashed a Democratic National Committee server that was hacked during the 2016 elections. Trump would like the Ukrainians to hand this over to the US government.
This is a reference to a conspiracy theory that rolls together a couple of misperceptions.
That starts with the fact that Crowdstrike has nothing to do with Ukraine. Its an American company whose co-founder was born in Russia but emigrated to the US as a kid. Crowdstrike was hired by the Democratic National Committee to help investigate the hacking of their email during the 2016 campaign, and Trump is disturbed by the fact that the DNC did not turn a physical server over to the FBI or anyone else. Critically, there is no server that could be hidden in Ukraine because the DNC used a modern cloud-based distributed email setup.
But the notion Trump is alluding to is the idea that the DNC was not really hacked by Russian actors at all. Instead, that attribution was faked by the allegedly Ukraine-linked Crowdstrike, which then hid the evidence as part of a larger plot to frame both Trump and the Russian government. Trump has time and again sought to exonerate Russia of culpability for computer crimes in 2016, and his interest in Crowdstrike seems to be part of that larger agenda.

Religious Affiliation And Attendance
As in previous elections, voters in 2016 were sharply divided along religious lines. Protestants constituted about half of the electorate and reported voting for Trump over Clinton by a 56% to 39% margin. Catholics were more evenly divided 52% reported voting for Trump, while 44% said they backed Clinton. Conversely, a solid majority of the religiously unaffiliated atheists, agnostics and those who said their religion was nothing in particular said they voted for Clinton over Trump .
Within the Protestant tradition, voters were divided by race and evangelicalism. White evangelical Protestants, who constituted one out of every five voters, consistently have been among the strongest supporters of Republican candidates and supported Trump by a 77% to 16% margin.
This is nearly identical to the 78% to 16% advantage that Mitt Romney held over Barack Obama among white evangelicals in Pew Research Center polling on the eve of the 2012 presidential election.
Among white mainline Protestants 57% said they voted for Trump and 37% reported voting for Clinton. Clinton won overwhelmingly among black Protestants .
White non-Hispanic Catholics supported Trump by a ratio of about two-to-one , while Hispanic Catholics favored Clinton by an even larger 78% to 19% margin.

The investigation into Donald Trumps handling of classified national security records is forcing Republicans into a strained defense during a pre-midterm sprint in which theyd much rather be talking about Joe Biden.
After having decried the FBIs search of the ex-presidents home, many Trump defenders went silent uponthe release on Friday of the probable-cause affidavit that revealed the extent of Trumps efforts to hold onto the top-secret documents. GOP worries about the developments of the case and Trump announcing a 2024 run before November are giving way to a subtle, broader warning about putting the former president too much on the ballot this fall.
Republicans should focus on defeating Democrats, and every Democrat should have the word Biden in front of their name, said Trump ally and former Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich. The Republican focus should be to win the election in November. Trump will do a fine job defending himself. Hell be fine.

Donald Trump famously hated the actual job of being president of the United States, given its emphasis on reading documents, listening to experts, and giving a crap about other people. On the other hand, he did enjoy the power, and one aspect of the power he really seemed to like was the fact that, according to his lawyers, he couldnt be held accountable for any crimes while in office.
Now, at the moment, Donald Trump is not president, and his legal situation isnt looking so hot. For one thing, the January 6 committee has given the Justice Department a whole bunch of reasons to indict the guy, and on Sunday, vice-chair Liz Cheneysaid the panel may make its own criminal referral. For another, the Fulton County criminal investigation into Trumps attempt to overturn the 2020 election is heating up and actually appears to have legs. Anyway, can you see where this is going?
Meanwhile, during an interview with ABCs This Week on Sunday, Cheney confirmed that the January 6 committee could refer Trump for criminal charges to the DOJ, while also noting that the Justice Department does not need to wait on the panel to make its own indictment. Democratic lawmakers could use the 14th Amendment to keep former president Donald Trump from running for the presidency again in the 2024 election, according to an opinion piece.
Section 3 of the 14th Amendment states that a person is disqualified from being president, vice-president, senator or representative in Congress if they participated in an insurrection or rebellion or aided such acts against the United States while holding federal office.
To use the 14th Amendment, the Democratic Party could file a lawsuit against Trump in federal court, seeking a ruling that Trump participated in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection and an order that would disqualify him from running even as a candidate for the presidency. Trump can then choose to fight the lawsuit or claim the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination, according to an opinion piece written by Alan B. Morrison and published by The Hill.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in January for a charge of incitement of insurrection after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol in the final days of his office. The riot led to the death of five people, including a Capitol police officer.

New York Criminal Inquiry
Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, has been investigating whether Trumps family real estate company misrepresented the values of its properties to get favorable bank loans and lower tax bills.
Two top lawyers who had been leading the investigation resigned in February, throwing the investigations future into question, but Braggs office has said it is ongoing.

The House committee probing the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol kicked off a prime-time hearing Thursday with searing charges against Donald Trump, painting a portrait of the former president at the center of a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election.
Trump, charged Rep. Bennie Thompson, the Mississippi Democrat who leads the Jan. 6 panel, engaged in what became a sprawling, multi-step conspiracy aimed at overturning the presidential election, that was aimed at replacing Americans votes with his will to remain in power after his term ended.
Donald Trump was at the center of this conspiracy, said Thompson.
Lawmakers leading the probe said Thursdays prime-time hearing would be the start of sessions revealing new details about the insurrection. The panel, led by Thompson and Vice Chairwoman Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Republican, showed a videotaped deposition by former Attorney General Bill Barr, in which he said he told Trump that claims the election was stolen were bullshit. Trumps daughter Ivanka, in a separate video, said she accepted Barrs statement about lack of election fraud.
Trump has denied responsibility or any wrongdoing related to the Jan. 6 attack.
Trump, said Cheney, summoned the mob, assembled the mob and lit the flame of this attack.

The environment is what pulled Kelly DeJong into politics.
She was still young when her conservative-leaning mom and stepdad publicly vocalized their opposition to a pump that would divert some water from the Delaware River. The fight over that pump lasted years and failed to stop its construction. Its now close to DeJongs home in Bucks County.
In college, she registered to vote with the Green Party, but in recent years, she switched to the Democratic Party so she could vote in the primary.
I wasnt active in politics until 2016, when Trump got elected, she said. Her oldest daughter, 6 years old during that election, saw some of Trumps ads on television and didnt like they way he talked about people. We were raising her to be kind to people. She was so upset when he ended up winning, DeJong said.
Shes now involved in local politics, especially school board elections, which have become contentious after the debate over masks escalated into arguments she found disconcerting, over the rights of LGBTQ students in school, she said.
She, too, lives close to where she grew up, a place that wasnt nearly as diverse in her childhood as college at Carnegie Mellon University, where she graduated with a degree in architecture. She moved to Los Angeles after college but moved back to southeast Pennsylvania to settle down, marry and raise a family. DeJong and her husband, who is self-employed, have two daughters.

Former President Donald J. Trump is preparing to swoop into Ohio on Saturday to rally Republicans behind J.D. Vance in a key Senate race. Two weeks earlier, he did the same for Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania.
Neither candidate invited him.
Instead, aides to the former president simply informed the Senate campaigns that he was coming. Never mind that Mr. Trump, while viewed heroically by many Republicans, remains widely disliked among crucial swing voters.
The question of how to handle Mr. Trump has so bedeviled some Republican candidates for Senate that they have held private meetings about the best way to field the inevitable calls from his team, according to strategists familiar with the discussions.
This awkward state of affairs reflects the contortions many Republican candidates are going through as they leave primary season behind and pivot to the general election, when Democrats are trying to bind them to the former president.

The anti-tax Club for Growth endorsed Barnette on Wednesday and has begun airing TV ads on her behalf. That follows the anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony Lists decision on Tuesday to back Barnette over Oz.
The endorsement by Susan B. Anthony List is timely, with abortion in the headlines, and its backing of Barnette highlighted the story she has told of being the outcome of a rape when her mother was 11.
Kathy is a courageous advocate for life who exposes the human cost of abortion, Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of Susan B. Anthony List, said in a statement.
Its unclear whether the endorsements and advertising will be enough to carry Barnette to the top of the field in Pennsylvanias May 17 primary.
The Club for Growth, for instance, unleashed millions of dollars in advertising against Trump-backed JD Vance in Ohios GOP Senate primary earlier this month only for the Hillbilly Elegy author to go on and win the race by an eight-point margin.

What Lawsuits And Investigations Is Donald Trump Facing
As FBI agents search Trumps Mar-a-Lago resort, heres a recap of legal turmoil facing him on several fronts
Donald Trump said on Monday that FBI agents searched his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
While the search appears to be part of an investigation into Trumps unlawful removal and destruction of White House records after his presidency, the businessman and politician is facing investigations and lawsuits on a number of fronts.
Heres a recap.
The US National Archives and Records Administration in February notified Congress that it had recovered about 15 boxes of White House documents from Trumps Florida home, some of which contained classified materials.
The US House of Representatives oversight committee at that time said it was expanding an investigation into Trumps actions and asked the Archives to turn over additional information. Trump previously confirmed that he had agreed to return certain records to the Archives, calling it an ordinary and routine process.
