But that doesn’t mean speaking out against the man and his poisonous campaign is any less important. Resistance may be futile, but it is necessary, particularly if there is a chance to persuade anyone still persuadable. So, here goes.
To be fair, the bewilderment surrounding Obama’s proclamation was warranted. Her statement, whether implied or inferred, was an opinion that stood in stark contrast to the belief held by the majority of Americans the belief that America is and always will be a beacon of hope the pride that America is the world’s first responder that America is still the shining city on the hill.
So what has changed? If Obama’s opinion at the time was inexcusable, what should we make of the vainer and more pessimistic Trump? His entire campaign is built around the simple phrase “Make America Great Again.” But no one has asked him when the country was worthy of his pride. Was it at her founding? In the 1950s? The ’80s? Was it when Gen. John Pershing dipped bullets in pig’s blood ?

President Donald Trump may not be as much of a fan of capitalism after he learns that Walmart is undercutting him on his own themed merchandise.
The retail giant is selling “USA” hats at a fraction of the cost of official MAGA hats sold by Trump’s online campaign store.
Walmart’s $10 hats, which its website describes as USA Trump hats, are similar to the hat worn by Trump to a number of official outings. The hat has USA emblazoned on the front, the number 45 on one side and the American flag on the other.
On Trump’s online campaign website, the hat is available for $40, with its description reading: “The only place online to purchase the Official USA rope hat worn by 45th President-Elect Donald J. Trump, himself.”
According to Time magazine, which reported the sales by Walmart of similar hats, the caps “do not appear to be official merchandise nor made by the same manufacturer.”
Indeed, Walmart’s website does not indicate that its hats are official merchandise, although they are very similar to the official merchandise, also featuring USA on the front, 45 on one side and the American flag on the other, with the description: “USA Trump Hat 45th President Make America Great Again.”
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington hit out at the president over his decision to wear his Trump hat as he set off to visit Texas after the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.
A Dearth Of Biden Merch
Todd L. Belt, director of the political management program at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., told the Deseret News in 2019 that hes never seen any other type of political merchandise take off the way Trumps MAGA hats did. The expansion of Trump merchandise to the point where retails shops are profitable can be explained, in part, by what Belt called the performance of identity.
Showing other people which side youre on has become more magnified lately. And thats part of the hyperpartisan landscape were in, he said.
But on social media, people have noticed that there seems to be no equivalent business opportunity for Democrats or liberals.
Biden merchandise is available on the online White House gift shop and is made by private sellers at online shops like Zazzle and Etsy, but there are no traveling Biden shops at least none that are getting any publicity. A Google search for Biden pop-up shop yields a for a table in Tennessee where people were selling Biden buttons, signs and bumperstickers. Eleven people had responded to the post.
That said, the popularity of Trump merchandise doesnt necessarily correspond with electoral college votes.
Last year, Boyts said, a local reporter asked him who he thought would win the election. I said I bet every dollar that Trump will win because I dont get calls from people wanting to buy Joe Biden stuff. You would have thought … but thats not how it played out.

NEW YORK — In a fundraising email to supporters, Donald Trump revealed a new MAGA hat which he says he designed.
As opposed to the classic red cap with “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” in white letters slapped on the front, the new cap says the abbreviated “MAGA” in white letters outlined in yellow.
“I just designed our BRAND NEW MAGA Hat and I want YOU to have it,” the Saturday email from the former president reads. “Youve always been one of my most LOYAL supporters, so I dont want you to have just ANY hat I want YOU to have the MAGA Hat that I personally HAND-SIGNED for YOU.”
The fundraising email encourages people to donate to have a chance at snagging one of the new cotton twill hats signed by Trump,
Trump continues, “Our movement isnt slowing down, in fact, its only speeding up. Thats why I wanted to design a NEW HAT for all of our best supporters.”
The new MAGA hat is also sold for $40 via Trump’s website, alongside the original Make America Great Again hat for $30.

Donald Trump has allegedly redesigned his iconic MAGA hat himself, and told his fans in an email that he will sign the $40 item.
In a fundraising email at the weekend, the former president said he had redesigned his iconic red MAGA hat by swapping the words Make American Great Again for the simpler acronym MAGA in red and gold lettering.
He wrote in the email that he redesigned our BRAND NEW MAGA Hat and I want YOU to have it.
Our movement isnt slowing down. In fact, it’s only speeding up. That’s why I wanted to design a NEW HAT for all of our best supporters. he added in the email, as The New York Post reported.
The redesigned hat, which went on sale on Monday, is $10 more expensive than the original MAGA hat, and $5 more expensive than a hat with the words Save America on the front.
All three are available on his Save America store, which is hosted by WinRed the Republican fundraising nonprofit that was forced to deny accusations that it broke federal campaign finance laws, after reporting an operating budget of zero.
WinRed, according to The Daily Beast, was accused on Monday of failing to report who it was paying to work for it, or who its service providers were, after raising a total of $2.24 billion for GOP campaigns in 2020.
Mr Trumps online store reopened on WinRed in April after it was shut down by its former host, Shopify, in the wake of the Capitol riot on 6 January.

Hundreds of autographed Trump collectibles with high price tags are being hawked on eBay and other online marketplaces.
In December, a baseball signed by both Trump and Vice President Mike Pence sold for $4,999.99. The ball came with a certificate of authenticity, the eBay listing said. Also in December, a listing for original artwork said to be drawn and signed by Trump in 2000 sold for $4,200 plus a $100 shipping fee.
A seller in Rhode Island currently has an eBay listing for $100,000 of Trumps 1990 book “Surviving at the Top,” which is signed to Mom & Dad. A MAGA hat supposedly signed by Trump is going for $7,999.16.
Trump, a king of branding, seems irked that someone other than him is profiting from his name. This is, after all, a man who knows the value of merch and has put that knowledge to work on his campaign which has a brisk business in red hats, patriotic pins and Trump 2020 T-shirts.
Last year Rep. Peter King of New York took his 11-year-old granddaughter to the White House to watch the signing of a health care bill for first responders to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. King told The Atlantic Trump gave his granddaughter the signed speech with the admonition: If I find this on eBay tonight, Im coming after you.
Are Maga Hats Made In China
Questions about the Trump campaign’s symbolic red hats started and were debunked in 2015. The claims circulated again last year and have found new traction as the country heads toward Election Day.
In 2016, a closer look at the hats by the Associated Press found that some did not contain the fabric that the manufacturer says is always used.
Brian Kennedy, president of Cali Fame of Los Angeles, the company that makes the official hats, did not explain the discrepancy but said “all or virtually all” of the materials are from the United States.
In 2019, Kennedy told AP that the hats are made entirely in Carson, California.
USA TODAY has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment on the merchandise. But according to the official Trump merchandise website, the campaign’s products are “proudly made in the USA.”
While the “made in China” tags can be found on some Trump merchandise, those items are not official products of the campaign they’re from outside vendors.
A WCIV report of a Trump rally in Charleston, South Carolina, in March illustrated this distinction. Vendors at Trump rallies often sell merchandise, but most of these items are made outside the U.S. in countries like China, Honduras and Haiti.
