Trump Often Made False Claims

Trump and his press secretary often made claims that appeared to be palpably false, as, for example, in saying that more people showed up to his inauguration than any previous president . Trump also claimed that the only reason that he lost the popular vote was because millions of immigrants illegally voted.

No evidence substantiated this claim or similar claims that he made about the election of 2020.

Trump Named Three Supreme Court Justices

Although Republicans had a majority in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, Trumps administration had a rocky start. Although he succeeded in getting Neil Gorsuch confirmed as a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court , efforts to repeal Obamacare did not succeed. Controversy over both the presidents actions and tweets took attention and energy away from his plans for major improvements in Americas infrastructure and tax reform, though tax changes eventually were implemented by Congress in December 2017.

Trump was given another opportunity to appoint a Supreme Court justice when Justice Anthony Kennedy, who had often cast a decisive swing vote in close cases, announced his retirement. Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh a former Kennedy clerk who served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Considered much more conservative than Kennedy, Kavanaugh was confirmed on Oct. 6, 2018, after highly contentious Senate Judiciary Committee hearings.

Don’t Miss: How Is Trump Doing In The Election

Biden On November Jobs Report: ‘america Is Back To Work’

Meanwhile, we’re entering another grim pandemic winter, and though the omicron wave taking hold across the country will hopefully be less murderous thanks to possible lessened severity and increased population-wide immunity, it’s still going to be hard on hospitals. Parents are struggling with child care, people may fear going to work, others may end up sick and so on.

In short, the economy doesn’t feel nearly as good as 4 percent unemployment should feel.

The second factor is partisanship. The University of Michigan conducts a survey on consumer sentiment broken out by party, which shows a truly staggering gap between the two a relatively recent development, incidentally. Since Biden won the election, Republican attitudes on the economy have soured to the point where they register worse consumer sentiment than at the pit of the Great Recession in early 2009.

Republicans are more biased in both directions these days: ecstatic when their guy was in office and operatically pessimistic now that he’s not.

Strengthen Us Competitiveness Against Mexico

President Trumps Job Approval Holds at 46 Percent: Good or Bad News ...

Trump has many initiatives that involve Mexico.

Trump successfully renegotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement in 2018. The new treaty, now called the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement , was officially ratified by all three parties in early 2020. Its goal was to bring back some U.S. manufacturing jobs sent across the border in previous years. The most significant change is that auto companies must manufacture more parts in the NAFTA trade area.

Trump promised to reduce the number of workers coming from Mexico by completing the wall along the 1,954-mile border. Legislative initiatives from the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations led to more than 650 miles of completed wall. Trump added another 371 miles, with a goal to complete 450 miles by the end of 2020.

Nearly half of all current unauthorized immigrants crossed the border with visas and then stayed after the permits expired.

End Outsourcing And Bring Back Jobs From Overseas

America lost 31.4% of its manufacturing jobs between 2000 and 2011 these were steady jobs that, on average, paid $28.85 per hour.

U.S. companies outsourced many of these jobs to save money. But robotics, artificial intelligence, and bio-engineering also made some jobs obsolete, so ending outsourcing may not bring back all the jobs that were lost. It’s possible that government-sponsored training for these specialties might create more jobs for U.S. workers than a trade war.

Democrats generally understand they will need federal employees to implement their policies, though they may believe that those employees need to be liberated from rules, Light added. Republicans have the same hierarchy, but are motivated by a different goal. Both parties in the past have come in saying, Weve got an agenda weve got four years, maybe eight, so we cant wait for action.

In the Trump administration, Light noted, many may agree with Bannons concept of a deep state, but are uncomfortable with that language.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon steps off Air Force One on April 9, 2017, at Andrews Air Force Base, Md.

Others are skeptical that many in Trumps circles actually buy into the notion of a deep state. If they had this theory of the deep state and were worried, the first thing they would do is appoint a lot of political appointees, said Donald Devine, who headed the Office of Personnel Management in the Reagan administration.

Norm Ornstein, a longtime observer of Washington at the American Enterprise Institute, is appalled at what he sees as Bannons promotion of a conspiracy theory of lawless people trying to undermine American values for their own warped sense and defying laws and property.

A Dearth Of Shared Facts And Information

One of the few things that Republicans and Democrats could agree on during Trumps tenure is that they didnt share the same set of facts. In a 2019 survey, around three-quarters of Americans said most Republican and Democratic voters disagreed not just over political plans and policies, but over basic facts.

Much of the disconnect between the parties involved the news media, which Trump routinely disparaged as fake news and the enemy of the people. Republicans, in particular, expressed widespread and growing distrust of the press. In a 2019 survey, Republicans voiced more distrust than trust in 2o of the 30 specific news outlets they were asked about, even as Democrats expressed more trust than distrust in 22 of those same outlets. Republicans overwhelmingly turned to and trusted one outlet included in the study Fox News even as Democrats used and expressed trust in a wider range of sources. The study concluded that the two sides placed their trust in two nearly inverse media environments.

Some of the media organizations Trump criticized most vocally saw the biggest increases in GOP distrust over time. The share of Republicans who said they distrusted CNN rose from 33% in a 2014 survey to 58% by 2019. The proportion of Republicans who said they distrusted The Washington Post and The New York Times rose 17 and 12 percentage points, respectively, during that span.3

How Much Influence Does The President Have On The Economy

Although presidential candidates usually make a lot of economic promises, their ability to fulfill them is somewhat limited. Much depends on factors outside of the president’s control, such as the state of the economy when they take office or national and global events that occur during their time in office. Presidents can impact the economy through things like budget decisions, tariffs, Federal Reserve appointments, and influencing Congress, but many of these policies have a delayed impact on the economy.

Misogyny And Allegations Of Sexual Misconduct

Trump has a history of insulting and belittling women when speaking to media and on social media. He made lewd comments, demeaned women’s looks, and called them names, such as ‘dog’, ‘crazed, ‘crying lowlife’, ‘face of a pig’, or ‘horseface’.

In October 2016, two days before the second presidential debate, a 2005 “hot mic” recording surfaced in which Trump is heard bragging about kissing and groping women without their consent, saying “when you’re a star, they let you do it, you can do anything… grab ’em by the .” The incident’s widespread media exposure led to Trump’s first public apology during the campaign and caused outrage across the political spectrum.

At least 26 women, including his first wife, have publicly accused Trump of rape, kissing and groping without consent, looking under women’s skirts, or walking in on naked teenage pageant contestants. In 2016, he denied all accusations, calling them “false smears” and alleging a conspiracy against him and the American people.

Donald Trump promised to be the greatest job-producing president in U.S. history. During his 2016 campaign, he pledged to create 25 million jobs in the next 10 years. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were 3.1 million fewer jobs in December 2020 than in January 2017 when Trump took office.

If Donald Trump had been able to keep his campaign promise, he would have beaten the current record-holder, President Bill Clinton, who during his two terms.

To create those jobs, Trump told the Economic Club of New York he wanted to establish a national goal of 4% economic growth. Let’s look at the details of his policies and how they’ve worked during his term.

An Agenda With A Precedent

Indeed, President Reagans government is the problem theme had its heyday only three years after Democratic President Jimmy Carter had worked with Congress to enact the 1978 Civil Service Act, largely as an effort to professionalize government.

Devine, who ran personnel-related issues for Reagans transition team before becoming OPM director, recalls the scene in 1981 as one in which unions were threatening job actions, and either sitting with their arms folded or not showing up. Eventually, after federal air traffic controllers went on strike and Reagan fired them, those job actions stopped.

Most civil servants disliked Reagan. Devine, now a college professor, remembers an early speech on cutting bureaucracy he delivered to the American Society for Public Administration. It drew loud boos and multiple requests for printed copies. My dealings with the bureaucracy showed me their first priorities were maintaining the status quo in their agencies, and they were certainly not Republicans, he said.

The Reagan years, much like today, brought to Washington many appointees to run agencies charged with missions the appointees dont endorse. One such example is Anne Gorsuch Burford, Reagans Environmental Protection Agency administrator. In 1981, with Reagans blessing, she began implementing a 22 percent budget cut and slashed regulations. After a scandal surrounding the $1.6 billion hazardous waste superfund cleanup program, she was cited for contempt of Congress.

Has Donald Trump Been To New York Since Ending His Presidency

Trump was seen leaving Trump Tower in Manhattan in the afternoon after spending two days to look under the hood of his family company that is under investigation by state prosecutors, The Daily Mail reported.

The 45th president had arrived at Trump Tower the night of March 7, with Security Service and New York Police Department personnel and was not spotted again until he departed on Tuesday.

It marked the first time Trump has visited New York City since he left the White House and moved to Florida.

On March 9, Secret Service and NYPD vehicles parked around the building as Trump waved to fans that gathered near his car.

Trumps son Donald Trump Jr trailed his father and got into another vehicle in the motorcade.

A source told the New York Daily News that Trump wanted to re-familiarize with the Trump Organization and his various business interests since returning to civilian life.

Hes quite curious about his businesses and his employees, his organization, and is eager to look under the hood, the source told the newspaper.

Hes not entirely sure of the role he will play, but he misses it, for sure.

Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance and New York state attorney general Letitia James have active investigations into Trumps business dealings.

Relationship With The Press

Trump began promoting himself in the press in the 1970s, and continued to seek media attention throughout his career, sustaining a lovehate relationship with the press. In the 2016 campaign, Trump benefited from a record amount of free media coverage, elevating his standing in the Republican primaries. The New York Times writer Amy Chozick wrote in 2018 that Trumps media dominance enthralled the public and created must-see TV.

As a candidate and as president, Trump frequently accused the press of bias, calling it the fake news media and the enemy of the people. In 2018, journalist Lesley Stahl recounted Trumps saying he intentionally demeaned and discredited the media so when you write negative stories about me no one will believe you.

As president, Trump privately and publicly mused about revoking the press credentials of journalists he viewed as critical. His administration moved to revoke the press passes of two White House reporters, which were restored by the courts. In 2019, a member of the foreign press reported many of the same concerns as those of media in the U.S., expressing concern that a normalization process by reporters and media results in an inaccurate characterization of Trump. The Trump White House held about a hundred formal press briefings in 2017, declining by half during 2018 and to two in 2019.
