Minutes after the House vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell suggested in a statement that Trump’s Senate trial will not start before Jan. 19, the chamber’s next scheduled business day.

It’s also about the time Democrats take over majority control of the Senate. The timetable essentially means McConnell is dropping the trial into the laps of Democrats.

“There is simply no chance that a fair or serious trial” could end before Biden takes office, McConnell wrote. He said it will “best serve our nation” if the government spends the coming week “completely focused on facilitating a safe inauguration and an orderly transfer of power” to Biden.

Still, McConnell did not rule out voting to convict Trump in the event of a trial. In a note to his fellow Republican senators just before the House was to begin voting, he said he is undecided.

“While the press has been full of speculation, I have not made a final decision on how I will vote and I intend to listen to the legal arguments when they are presented to the Senate,” McConnell wrote.

“I hope that the Senate leadership will find a way to deal with their Constitutional responsibilities on impeachment while also working on the other urgent business of this nation,” he said.

Exactly a month and a week after insurrectionists incited a riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, former President Donald Trump‘s second impeachment trial came to a climactic end on Saturday afternoon, with Trump being acquitted for his alleged role of inciting the deadly event. A majority of senators voted to convict the former president, but failed to reach the super majority threshold needed for a conviction.

In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people. There has never been anything like it!” the statement continued.

Drama ensued on the Senate floor Saturday morning when senators voted to hear from witnesses. However, after a roughly one-hour recess, the Senate determined no witnesses would be called, and opted instead to admit into evidence written testimony from Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash.

Trump’s lawyers were often combative in their rebuttal.

Lead Impeachment Manager On Gop Senators Who Joined Democrats On Vote Today: People’s Minds Are Open

Rep. Jamie Raskin, the lead House impeachment manager, told reporters that one more Republican senator joining to vote with Democrats today shows peoples minds are open.

Raskin was initially asked if he was disappointed that so few Republicans joined Democrats to vote on whether the impeachment trial against former President Trump was constitutional.

Raskin flipped the narrative and said that getting one more Republican senator than the five who joined Democrats against GOP Sen. Rand Paul’s motion at the end of January showed that not all minds are made up.

We were told that it would be completely partisan and locked from the last vote and it wasn’t. So people’s minds are open, he told reporters.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana, was the only GOP senator to change his vote on the constitutionality of the trial. Cassidy previously voted in favor of Pauls motion that impeachment after Trump left office is unconstitutional.

Raskin was also asked to react to Trump lawyer Bruce Castor saying the defense legal team switched up their order of speakers after the House impeachment managers did such a good job with their opening statements.

That is a very kind remark, Raskin said of Castor.

Asked if he thinks he can sway enough Republican senators to believe that the trial is constitutional, Raskin said, We haven’t started the evidence yet, but we’re starting tomorrow.

National Guard Says A Portion Of The Troops At Us Capitol Will Be Armed

WASHINGTON A portion of the 20,000 National Guard troops supporting U.S. Capitol security and President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration will be armed, the National Guard Bureau confirmed to CNBC.

“This was requested by federal authorities and authorized by the Secretary of the Army. National Guard members are postured to meet the requirements of the supported civil authorities, up to and including protective equipment and being armed if necessary,” a National Guard Bureau spokesperson wrote in a statement.

For security reasons, officials from the National Guard and the Pentagon would not elaborate on the exact number of troops that will be armed and if the troops will be armed after Inauguration Day.

Earlier in the week, Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau told reporters that the troops arriving to support local law enforcement in Washington will bring their weapons.

“Ideally, we will never need them, but if we do, we want to know that they are close by and readily accessible” Hokanson added.

Hokanson reiterated that it is typical for the National Guard to support law enforcement for inaugurations, adding that there were approximately 9,000 National Guard members at former President Barack Obama’s inauguration. For Trump’s ceremony in 2017, more than 7,000 troops were mobilized.

On the face of it, it seems unlikely. An impeachment trial requires a two-thirds majority for a conviction. If every senator votes, then at least 17 Republicans would need to vote against their former president to reach the required 67-vote threshold.

At the beginning of the trial, 44 Republican senators voted that the process itself is unconstitutional and against holding it at all. It would be quite a leap for them in the space of a few days to go from saying the trial should not take place, to finding Trump guilty.

For many Republican senators the calculation is political. House Representatives who voted to impeach Trump, such as Republican Liz Cheney, have already faced protest and censure from their state Republican parties over their failure to back Trump, who still has strong grassroots support despite losing Novembers election.

Tech companies Google and Airbnb on Wednesday announced actions ahead President-elect Joe Bidens inauguration next week.

Google said it will pause political ads along with any referencing “impeachment, inauguration or protests at the U.S. Capitol” beginning Thursday.

“We regularly pause ads over unpredictable, ‘sensitive’ events when ads can be used to exploit the event or amplify misleading information,” Google said in a statement Wednesday. “Beyond this, we have long-standing policies blocking content that incites violence or promotes hate and we will be extremely vigilant about enforcing on any ads that cross this line.”

Airbnb said Wednesday it will be canceling and blocking future reservations in the Washington metro area during the week of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Guests who had reserved a place will be refunded in full. The company said it will also reimburse the Airbnb hosts with the money that would have been earned from the canceled reservations. HotelTonight reservations will also be canceled, it said.

Who Will Be Prosecuting And Defending

The nine Democratic House lawmakers who will serve as prosecutors, or “managers,” in the Senate trial represent a mix of seasoned hands and newer faces.

The team of managers will be led by Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, who was a constitutional law professor at American University before elected to Congress in 2016. Also on the team: David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Joaquin Castro of Texas, Diana DeGette of Colorado, Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania, Ted Lieu of California, Joe Neguse of Colorado, Stacey Plaskett of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Eric Swalwell of California.

“For us to heal as a nation, we must remember,” Dean said Friday on MSNBC. “And that is what I believe the trial will represent, some of the very first steps toward this nation healing.”

None of the nine were managers in last year’s impeachment trial against Trump.

Trump has has hired South Carolina attorney Butch Bowers to represent him at the upcoming impeachment trial, aides said. Bowers worked for the Justice Department during President George W. Bush’s administration but is better known as for his government work in South Carolina. He has served as counsel to Republican governors Nikki Haley and Mark Sanford, and did a stint as chairman pf South Carolina’s election commission.

Trump political adviser Jason Miller confirmed Bowers’ hiring on social media, retweeting praise of the South Carolina attorney.

“He’s good,” Miller tweeted Thursday. “Very good.”

What Might Trump Be Charged With

Bonifaz, of the Impeach Trump Now group behind the petition, argues that Trumps failure to divest from his businesses has already produced frequent violations of constitutional rules for emoluments, or gifts. Investigations into associations with Russia by Trump or his proxies could conceivably produce some kind of disloyalty charge. If Trump has to testify at some point about any of this, he could face a Clinton-style perjury charge. Abuse of power? Obstruction of justice?
