How Is Trump Doing In The Primaries

Why So Few Primaries:

How Georgia officials defended the election from Trump pressure | Jan. 6 hearing

One thing that jumped out during the lead up to the primary? The lack of primaries. There are only about a dozen primaries for statewide office throughout the state and most towns only have a couple of races on their individual ballots. Save for some probate judge races, the GOP races include a battle for a U.S. Senate nod, Secretary of the State and in the southwestern part of the state the 4th Congressional District. On the Democratic side, theres the Secretary of the State and Treasurer. Both parties have some general assembly seat races sprinkled in. But overall, in comparison to past primaries that have seen a couple dozen primaries or more, this one is certainly limited.

More Coverage Of The 2022 Midterm Elections

Attorney General Chris Carr defeated John Gordon, a Trump-supported opponent, with more than 73 percent of the vote.

In a primary runoff for an open seat in Georgias Sixth Congressional District, Rich McCormick, a physician and retired Marine, defeated the Trump-backed candidate Jake Evans, the former chairman of the states ethics commission and the son of a Trump administration ambassador.

The former professional football star Herschel Walker, who was endorsed by Mr. Trump, dominated a Senate primary and will face Senator Raphael Warnock, a Democrat and prolific fund-raiser, in the general election.

Tuesday’s Primaries Could Set Up History In Vermont Wisconsin And More Trump

There will be elections in Connecticut, Minnesota, Vermont and Wisconsin.

Tuesday’s primary races — in four states: Connecticut, Minnesota, Vermont and Wisconsin — feature another Donald Trump-Mike Pence proxy battle for governor, another attempt by Trump to oust a state legislative leader for perceived lack of loyalty, a member of the progressive “squad” facing down a primary challenge and a potential barrier-breaking primary in Vermont, the last state in the nation never to send a woman to Congress.

In Wisconsin, several Republicans are hoping to take on incumbent Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in a race with implications for abortion rights and the 2024 election in a politically divided state.

Trump has thrown his support behind Tim Michels, a veteran and co-owner of a construction company. Michels has been pitching himself as a political outsider, even though this is not his first run for public office.

Michels has avoided saying whether or not he would try to attempt the impossible and reverse Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election, something that other Trump endorsees have said that they plan to do.

Michels’ opponent Rebecca Kleefisch, a former two-term lieutenant governor, is backed by Pence and former Gov. Scott Walker. Kleefisch initially said President Joe Biden was legitimately elected, but she has since baselessly claimed the election was “rigged” — comparing it even to the NFL “Deflategate” scandal.

Us Primaries: Rusty Bowers Who Defied Trump Loses Re

BBC News

A Republican who resisted pressure from Donald Trump to help overturn the 2020 election has lost a vote to a candidate endorsed by the former president.

Rusty Bowers was hoping to fight for election to the Arizona state senate, but lost the party’s primary vote to David Farnsworth.

The staunch conservative also testified against Mr Trump to the committee investigating last year’s Capitol riot.

Republican voters elsewhere in the US also backed Trump-endorsed candidates.

Candidates were chosen in a number of states on Tuesday following primary elections that decide who will stand for the party in November’s mid-terms.

Those who have publicly supported Donald Trump and repeated his false claims about fraud and malpractice in the 2020 presidential election performed well.

It was a clear indication of Mr Trump’s continuing influence on the Republican Party and the enduring support for his claims about the election he lost to President Joe Biden.

Mr Trump, who has hinted publicly at potentially running for president again, has endorsed dozens of Republican candidates.

Mr Bowers, 69, gave emotional testimony to the committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol in which he said Mr Trump and his adviser Rudy Giuliani tried to push him to help overturn the election results.

Dixon is also an opponent of abortion access, arguing that the only exception should be when the procedure is needed to save the life of the mother.

When asked on a recent podcast, “No BS Newshour,” whether she would tell a 14-year-old who was hypothetically sexually abused by an uncle to carry the pregnancy to term, Dixon doubled-down on her stance, : “A life is a life for me.” Dixon’s view on abortions is in direct contrast to Whitmer, who is considered a prominent Democratic voice for abortion rights.

1st time abortion is on the ballot since Roe

The first major abortion ballot initiative after the overturning of Roe v. Wade will play out in Kansas on Tuesday. Voters will have to accept or reject a proposal to amend the state constitution to eliminate the right to access abortion, which remained in place after the Supreme Court reversed Roe in June and said the issue should be left to individual states.

The proposal is backed by Republican Sen. Roger Marshall and former Kansas lawmaker and Trump Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, while its opponents include Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly and Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

If the amendment passes, abortion would not be immediately banned in Kansas but it would pave the way for the Republican-controlled legislature to pass stricter abortion laws.

Who Were The Candidates In These Primaries

If the biggest takeaway from the 2018 primaries was the large number of women running, the biggest takeaway from the primaries in these two states is the large number of veterans running. In Indiana, 19 of the 50 total candidates identified as a veteran. In Ohio, 13 of the 73 candidates identified as vets. In total, 32 veterans ran in the May 3 primaries, making up around a quarter of all candidates.

In terms of other demographics, the candidates of the May 3 primaries were mostly white, male, married, and college educated.

In Indiana, there were 22 candidates running in the Democratic primary and 28 candidates running in the Republican primary. Most candidates were white , with the second highest number being African American and the third highest being Latino . Most mentioned they were married . They were also overwhelmingly male, with men making up 82% of all candidates and women making up 18% of all candidates . They were also very college educated, with 76% having at least a four-year college degree and 42% having more than a four-year degree.

The driving force behind Donald Trumps election picks in Georgia was simple: the 11,000 votes that cost him the state in 2020.

Those who supported the former presidents efforts to overturn the election results were rewarded with endorsements. Those who didnt including Gov. Brian Kemp, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Attorney General Chris Carr ended up with Trump-backed primary challengers.

But things didnt go quite the way Trump planned. Kemp won big over former Sen. David Perdue on Tuesday. Carr and Insurance Commissioner John King also won by huge margins. Raffensperger won the primary outright he didnt even get forced into a runoff, as many expected.

The fate of state Sen. Burt Jones, whom Trump endorsed in the open race for lieutenant governor, remains unclear. While he was leading his nearest challenger by close to 20 percentage points, with 96 percent of the expected vote in, it wasnt clear if Jones would avoid a runoff: He was at 50.1 percent, a hair above the threshold.

The lone bright spot in Trumps Georgia record? His recruited candidate for Senate, Herschel Walker. The former football star maintained a steady lead in the polls since the early days of his campaign and easily sailed to his GOP nomination.

He voted to overturn 2020 electoral votes.

Victories In Illinois With Outside Help

State Senator Darren Bailey, who got a last-minute endorsement from Mr. Trump, won the Republican primary for governor. Democratic spending, including by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, may have helped Mr. Bailey, whom Democrats saw as easier to beat in the general election.

Representative endorsed by Mr. Trump months ago, won her House primary against fellow Representative Rodney Davis after redistricting put them in the same district.

‘She knows it wasnt stolen’: Liz Cheney challenges rival over Trump’s false election claim

It was an interesting scene in Bridgeport shortly after 9:30 p.m. where State Sen. Dennis Bradley was seen celebrating and dancing, hoping to clinch a victory of Herron Gaston. The race, however, had not yet been called. In fact, unofficial race results were hard to come by at that time. It wouldnt be the first time Bridgeport has been slow to report results, of course.

Meanwhile, in Missouri, once-disgraced former Gov. Eric Greitens vies for a new political life in the GOP Senate primary amid a child custody dispute with his ex-wife while opponent Eric Schmitt, the Missouri attorney general, has picked up considerable steam.

On Monday, Trump endorsed a vague “ERIC” — and both Greitens and Schmitt have each claimed the endorsement as their own.

Three GOP lawmakers who voted to impeach Trump face voters

Tuesday also brings contests between Trump-endorsed candidates and three Republican incumbents who voted to impeach the former president after the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6. Reps. Peter Meijer of Michigan, Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington and Dan Newhouse of Washington have distanced themselves from the former president, earning the ire of both some congressional colleagues and the conservative base.

They are almost the last of the Trump-defying members of Congress up for re-election — ahead of only Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, defending her seat in a closely-watched primary later this month.

Out of the 10 Republican members of Congress who impeached Trump last year, four, including Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, decided not to seek reelection. And one lost to state Rep. Russell Fry.

Only Rep. David Valadao of California successfully fended off his primary challenger.

In an interview with ABC News last week, Meijer was more blunt.

Several Reasons For Satisfaction

In total, among the 10 representatives who voted against Mr. Trump, and whom he has since vilified, the record so far not including Tuesday’s vote was in his favor: Four chose not to run again and one was defeated . Only one, David Valadao, in California, has won his primary so far. Liz Cheney, who has become the former president’s most vocal opponent, is expected to lose in the Wyoming primary on August 16.

Trump Vs Pence Proxy War Ends In Decisive Gop Primary Election

Donald Trump has beaten Mike Pence in the proxy war which became a subplot in a number of GOP primary elections.

On Tuesday, Pence-endorsed former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch conceded defeat to Trump-backed businessman Tim Michels in the Wisconsin Republican primary for governor.

Michels, another primary candidate who supports the false claim the last election was rigged against Trump, will now go on to face Democrat Tony Evers in November’s midterm election.

The Wisconsin race was the third time Pence and Trump had backed opposing candidates in the GOP primaries. The results were seen as a signifier as to which direction the GOP, and its voters, are heading as both men are reported to be gearing up for a run for president in 2024.

In Arizona, the Trump-endorsed candidate Kari Lake, who frequently pushes the false claim the 2020 election was “stolen” from the former president, beat the Pence-backed Karrin Taylor Robson in the race for the GOP nomination for governor, with the race declared on August 4.

However, Pence did manage to get one over Trump in the Georgia GOP gubernatorial primary in May, where he endorsed Gov. Brian Kemp for reelection.

Kemp comprehensively beat the Trump-endorsed candidate, former Senator David Perdue,

With only a handful of primaries to go, none of which have any Pence-endorsed candidates, Trump has beaten his former running mate two to one in races where their chosen candidates were on opposite sides.

House Seats In Illinois

What A Trump Presidency Might Mean For Massachusetts

As a result of redistricting, and an aggressive gerrymander by state Democratic legislators, Illinois has two incumbent vs. incumbent Congressional primaries.

Rep. Rodney Davis, an establishment Republican who previously represented a more politically competitive district, was drawn into a ruby red seat in the sprawling 15th District in central Illinois. He has been in a combative primary with Rep. Mary Miller, a firebrand conservative serving her first term in Congress.

Trump has endorsed Miller and backed her at Saturday’s rally with Bailey. During that rally, Miller said the Supreme Court’s overturning Roe v. Wade is a “historic victory for white life.” Her campaign has said she misread prepared remarks and meant to say “right to life.”

On Sunday, Davis’ campaign said the gaffe is “just another part in a disturbing pattern of behavior she’s displayed since coming to Congress.” His campaign had previously highlighted Miller’s speech in January 2021 where she praised Adolf Hitler when talking about education.

“If we win a few elections, we’re still going to be losing, unless we win the hearts and minds of our children. This is the battle. Hitler was right on one thing: He said, ‘Whoever has the youth, has the future.’ Our children are being propagandized,” she said at a “Moms for America” rally in Washington, D.C. She has apologized and said she is “passionately pro-Israel.”

Miller and allies have used that vote against him in ads and on the campaign trail.

Trump Says His Attorneys Werent Allowed Anywhere Near Fbi Raid

Former President Donald Trump crowed on social media Wednesday about the success of candidates he endorsed in Tuesdays primary elections particularly reveling in the defeat of a Republican incumbent in South Carolina who voted to impeach him after last years Capitol riot.

Every single endorsed by Trump candidate won last night, by big margins, with the exception of one very long shot who did FAR better than anticipated against an incumbent, Trump said on Truth Social.

The Impeacher was ousted without even a runoff. A GREAT night!, added the former president, referring to Rep. Tom Rices defeat in the Palmetto States 7th District by state Rep. Russell Fry.

Rice was one of 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach Trump on a single count of incitement of insurrection following the riot that disrupted congressional certification of Joe Bidens 2020 election victory. Trump was ultimately acquitted by the Senate.

The long shot Trump referred to was former South Carolina state Rep. Katie Arrington, whom he endorsed in the 1st District primary against incumbent GOPer Nancy Mace.

Americas No. 1 sport got underway Thursday, with the first preseason game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders broadcast nationally on NBC.

And despite it being a completely meaningless affair, more than 5 million people tuned in. That is a small audience given how many people watch regular season games. But in a sign of how strong a brand the NFL is, the game was by far the highest rated show of the night.

Just remember: The preseason doesnt matter. The last two teams to lose every single regular season game in a season won every game that preseason.

Senate Primaries Will Set Crucial Fall Matchups

In Missouri, state Attorney General Eric Schmitt will win the GOP Senate nomination, CNN projects. His victory is a relief for national party leadership anxious that former Gov. Eric Greitens would win and then lose the general election in November. Greitens had resigned in 2018 amid a sex scandal and accusations of campaign misconduct and more recently faced allegations of abuse from his ex-wife, which he has denied.

Schmitt and Greitens shared an 11th-hour endorsement from Trump, who said on Monday he was backing Eric and leaving it up to voters to decide which one, although both candidates immediately tried to claim the endorsement for themselves.

Echoing a pledge from Greitens, Schmitt who was endorsed by Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah said last week that he would not support Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for leader.

While Trump hedged his bets, the states junior senator, Josh Hawley, suffered a loss after backing Rep. Vicky Hartzler. One of two members of Congress seeking the nomination, she was critical of Trump in the aftermath of January 6, but still voted against certifying the presidential vote and touted her voting record with Trump on the trail.
