Which Republican Is Running Against Trump

Sen Tom Cotton Of Arkansas

Pence was asked if he’d run against Trump in 2024. Hear his response

Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas has been busy giving speeches, endorsing candidates and recruiting people for what looks like a presidential campaign operation, be it for 2024 or beyond.

During a September visit to Iowa, where he campaigned for local candidates, Cotton told Fox News he didn’t want to speculate on “far off” elections, but is focused on GOP efforts to win back Congress.

“Those races and further off from that will work themselves out when we get there,” Cotton said.

Former Vice President Mike Pence

The former vice president traveled to Iowa often while he was in office to tout the Trump administration’s policy agenda. He made his first return since losing the 2020 general election in July 2021 when he attended the Family Leadership Summit, a gathering of Christian conservatives and evangelicals. He also headlined an event for U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra in Iowa’s heavily conservative 4th Congressional District, which covers the northwest corner of the state.

Trump Pence Rivalry Intensifies As They Consider 2024 Runs

NEW YORK Former Vice President Mike Pence is becoming increasingly brazen in his willingness to counter former President Donald Trump.

The two will hold dueling events in Arizona on Friday as they stump for rival candidates who offer dramatically different visions of the Republican Party in a critical battleground state. Days later, they will once again cross paths as they deliver major speeches on the same day in Washington, D.C.

The encounters mark a more confrontational phase in the fraught relationship between the former running mates and once close confidantes who could soon find themselves competing against one another in the 2024 GOP presidential primary if they both ultimately choose to run.

I think this is a continuation of the larger message that Pence is trying to embody here, which is the Republican Party should look to the future, said Scott Jennings, a longtime party strategist. This is going to be the existential question for the Republican Party: Are we going to listen to a slightly different view than Donald Trumps? Right now, the standard-bearer for this is Mike Pence.

That description marks a striking turnaround for Pence, who spent his four years in the White House as Trumps most loyal defender. But Trump turned on his vice president when Pence refused to go along with his unconstitutional efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, putting Pence in the crosshairs of a violent mob on Jan. 6.

“I don’t think there’s been any effort” by the RNC to remain neutral, longtime Republican donor and Canary LLC CEO Dan Eberhart told ABC News. “This is a symbiotic relationship.”

“The RNC needs Trump or Trump surrogates or Trump’s likeness to raise money, and Trump wants them to continue paying his bills and be as pro-Trump as possible,” Eberhart said. “So neither is in a hurry to cut the umbilical cord.”

The RNC has continued to fundraise off of Trump’s name in its emails to supporters, touting a so-called “Trump Life Membership,” boosting his social media platform, and, most recently, promoting Trump’s first visit to Washington, D.C., since January of last year. Other potential 2024 presidential candidates and key party figures like former Vice President Mike Pence and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have not received the same spotlight as Trump, experts say.

Eberhart said the current relationship between Trump and the RNC is putting other potential 2024 presidential candidates at an “absolute disadvantage.”

“Other Republican candidates seeking the Republican nomination for president have good reason to worry that the party apparatus is rigged against them in its unwavering support for Trump,” echoed Craig Holman, government affairs lobbyist at the progressive government-watchdog group Public Citizen.

Eberhart said “it’s an open secret” within the Republican Party that “nobody wants Trump to announce his candidacy until after the midterms.”

Georgias Republican Us Senators Call On Gop State Election Chief To Resign

Bill Weld: Im Running Against Trump in the Republican Primary

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, himself a Republican, called the claims laughable and refused to step aside.

The early rancor and fighting over the presidential election results, which are headed for a recount despite Bidens growing lead, is a preview of the intense fight to come over the fate of the two Senate seats. Vice President Pence told GOP senators that he plans to campaign in the state, and national Democrats are already pouring money and support to their challengers, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.

The Georgia runoffs are slated for Jan. 5, after the Senate is scheduled to begin a new session. That uncertainty means the Senate will be unable to officially organize until the results of that election are finalized.

Why Were Those Three Removed

The state party removed the candidates because the trio didnt meet its requirements to be considered Tennessee Republicans.

Chip Saltsman, Lees campaign manager, said one of the requirements was to vote in three of the last four Tennessee Republican primaries held in August every two years.

Ortagus and Starbuck could not meet these requirements because they only recently moved to Tennessee.

Ortagus, a former Fox News commentator, relocated from Washington, D.C., to Nashville in 2021. The Florida native had no previous ties to the state.

Starbuck moved to Tennessee in 2019.

Others Who Didn’t Make The Ballot

Austin Chenge: The Grand Rapids-based businessman, who faced eligibility issues, dropped out of the race in March and endorsed Rinke.

Chenge had released a series of proposals to end voting machine contracts, “cancel Black History Month” and make Michigan a “constitutional carry” for firearms by eliminating the need for a concealed pistol permit.

Bob Scott: The Howell-area substitute teacher did not submit signatures to qualify for the GOP primary ballot but is considering an independent run.

Scott described himself as a strong supporter of the First and Second Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, which protect free speech and firearm rights.

Evan Space: The Lansing resident did not submit signatures to qualify for the GOP primary ballot for the second time in as many cycles. He also failed to make the ballot in 2018.

Space had leaned into his name, promising to establish space exploration launch sites and related college programs. Among his other novel proposals, Space said he would appoint a lieutenant governor to run the Upper Peninsula and treat it more like an independent state.

Best Of Frenemies: Ron Desantis Stalks Trump With Republican Primary Tour

Trump Goes After The ‘Big 12’ GOP Incumbents For The Midterms

The Florida governor has been dubbed a mini-Trump and was once boosted by the ex-president but a potential rivalry in 2024 has turned relations sour

As Floridas governor, Ron DeSantis, packs his suitcase for a five-day trip to campaign for Trump-endorsed candidates, he might afford himself a dastardly chuckle.

The trek, taking in Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio and Pennsylvania is nominally aimed at boosting Republicans chances ahead of Novembers crucial primaries. For DeSantis, however, there is surely a grander design. Each of the rising Republican stars destinations is a swing state, key to winning the 2024 presidential election.

The Florida governor who must walk the tightrope of being both ally and rival of Trump is hotly tipped to run for president, and this outwardly benevolent campaigning trip will further swell his profile.

There is a downside, however. DeSantiss sojourn will put him on a collision course with the Republican partys most sensitive, volatile and powerful figure: Donald Trump. With this tour, DeSantiss tightrope is getting more and more rocky.

Trump was key to getting DeSantis, who has been dubbed a mini-Trump, elected governor in 2018, but bad blood between the pair particularly from Trumps side has been brewing for some time.

The rise of DeSantis has not always gone down well with the twice-impeached former president who, according to one report, now hates his former protege.

Former Us Ambassador To The United Nations Nikki Haley

Haley, 49, stands out in the potential pool of 2024 Republican candidates by her resume. She has experience as an executive as the former governor of South Carolina and foreign policy experience from her time as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Haley was a member of the Republican Partys 2010 tea party class. A former South Carolina state representative, her long shot gubernatorial campaign saw its fortunes improve after she was endorsed by Sarah Palin. Haley rocketed from fourth to first just days after the endorsement, and she went on to clinch the nomination and become her states first female and first Indian-American governor.

As governor, she signed a bill removing the Confederate flag from the state Capitol following the white supremacist attack at the Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston. She left office in 2017 to join the Trump administration as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and Quinnipiac poll found she was at one point the most popular member of Trumps foreign policy team.

I think that shes done a pretty masterful job in filling out her resume, said Robert Oldendick, a professor and director of graduate studies at the University of South Carolinas department of political science.

Haley criticized Trump following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by his supporters, saying she was disgusted by his conduct. Oldendick said he thought her pretty pointed criticism of the president will potentially cause some problems.

Emboldened ‘unchanged’ Trump Looks To Re

The set of advisers around Trump now is a familiar mix of his top 2020 campaign aides and others who have moved in and out of his orbit over time. They include Miller, Susie Wiles, Bill Stepien, Justin Clark, Corey Lewandowski and Brad Parscale.

While his schedule isn’t set yet, according to Trump’s camp, his coming stops are likely to include efforts to help Ohio congressional candidate Max Miller, a former White House aide looking to win a primary against Rep. Anthony Gonzales, who voted to impeach Trump this year Jody Hice, who is trying to unseat fellow Republican Brad Raffensperger as Georgia secretary of state after Raffensperger defied Trump and validated the state’s electoral votes and Alabama Senate candidate Mo Brooks, according to Trump’s camp.

Trump’s ongoing influence with Republican voters helps explain why most GOP officeholders stick so closely to him. Republicans spared him a conviction in the Senate after the House impeached him for stoking the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, House GOP leaders have made it clear that they view his engagement as essential to their hopes of retaking the chamber, and Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., was deposed as Republican Conference Chair this year over her repeated rebukes of Trump.

Those numbers suggest that Trump could be in a strong position to win a Republican primary but lose the general election in 3½ years. A former Trump campaign operative made that case while discussing Trump’s ambitions.

Early March : Between Super Tuesdays

After Super Tuesday voting, but before winner-take-all voting was to begin, nine states, two territories and Washington, D.C. held their primaries and caucuses. During this period, 377 delegates were at stake. On March 3, 2016, the day before Carson dropped out of the race, Romney criticized Trump in a heavily publicized speech. Later that day, there was another GOP debate, which again featured Trump, Cruz, Rubio and Kasich. Carson did not participate in the debate, as he announced the suspension of his campaign the next day, narrowing the field to four he subsequently endorsed Trump on March 10, 2016, the day after Fiorina endorsed Cruz. Meanwhile, as the prospect of a Trump nomination became more imminent, establishment Republicans pressured Romney or House Speaker Paul Ryan to enter the race Romney had already decided not to enter the race on January 30, 2015, while Ryan announced he would not enter on April 13, 2016.

In the Virgin Islands caucuses on March 10, a slate composed wholly of uncommitted delegates was initially elected. However, the entire slate was later disqualified by the territorial party and was replaced by the elected alternates two uncommitted, two for Rubio and one each for Cruz and Trump. The dispute later went to court. Also on March 10, there was a debate in Florida between the four surviving candidates, which was conducted in a more civil tone than prior debates.

Trump Cabinet Members Urged GOP Gov. Larry Hogan To Run Against Him

Burr, who has said he will not seek re-election, had previously voted to dismiss the impeachment trial on constitutional grounds. Burrs term expires in 2022.

I have listened to the arguments presented by both sides and considered the facts. The facts are clear, explained Burr in a statement.

By what he did and by what he did not do, President Trump violated his oath of office to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, he explained, adding that he didnt come to this decision lightly.

Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes, who backed Donald Trumps efforts to challenge the 2020 election results, is preparing for a 2024 Senate run that could pit him against Sen. Mitt Romney in a GOP primary.

Reyes, who has been elected statewide three times, in recent weeks has discussed the matter with key players in Utah politics and with allies of the former president, according to a person who is familiar with Reyes plans. Reyes will make a final decision and likely announce his intentions in May.

Sean is very seriously considering running, regardless if Mitt runs or not, the person said. Hes confident that regardless of what Sen. Romney wants to do, hes going to pursue this.

Romney hasnt publicly discussed his 2024 plans. The 75-year-old former GOP presidential nominee and Massachusetts governor is being encouraged by some anti-Trump Republicans to run again for president, though multiple political operatives in Utah believe Romney is likely to retire from politics at the end of his current Senate term.

A spokesperson for Trump didnt directly say whether Trump has encouraged Reyes to run for the seat.

He then laughed and walked away.
