When Did Trump Stop Travel From China

What Else Did The Us President Say

Trump visits China

âThis is the most aggressive and comprehensive effort to confront a foreign virus in modern history,â he said in a prime-time televised address from the Oval Office on Wednesday.

Justifying the travel restrictions, he accused the EU of failing to take âthe same precautionsâ as the US in fighting the virus.

In his speech he said all travel from Europe would be suspended, but a presidential proclamation later said it would only apply to anyone who had been in the EUâs Schengen border-free area in the 14 days before their arrival in the US.

Mr Trump also said the suspension would also apply to cargo coming from Europe into the US. He later tweeted to say that trade would âin no way be affectedâ.

The speech included plans to provide billions of dollars in loans to small businesses and the president urged Congress to free up more funds.

President Trump said for most Americans the risk was âvery, very lowâ adding, âno nation is more prepared or more resilient than the United Statesâ.

The Trump Administration Travel Orders

On January 31, 2020, former President Donald Trump issued a presidential proclamation banning travel from China to the United States. This marked the beginning of the administrations effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 by means of implementing extensive immigration and visa restriction policies. By the end of May 2020, the Trump administration had issued travel bans to and from China, Iran, the Schengen Area of Europe, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Brazil. Although termed bans they are not total and there are many exceptions. Overall, these proclamations restrict the entry of immigrants or non-immigrants who have been physically present in these geographic areas in the preceding 14 days from entering the country, unless exempted or otherwise excepted. The exceptions include:

  • Non-citizen nationals of the United States
  • Lawful permanent residents of the United States
  • Noncitizen spouses of a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • And multiple other categories.

The slowdown in activity has raised fears that essential supplies, including food, will run short, which the government insists it will not allow to happen.

And it is unclear when Chinas economic engine a huge producer of both consumer goods and industrial components might return to anything resembling normal.

But if the restrictions in China are kept in place for many months and the virus keeps spreading, profits will suffer.

We dont really know what were planning for, Mr. Barstow said.

The number of cases have steeply inclined with every day, Dr. Fauci said.

The Changing Landscape Of Covid

From the earliest days of COVID-19 there has been an ongoing debate about the benefits of travel restrictions in reducing the spread of the disease. The Trump administration instituted multiple different restrictions, many of which have been continued by the Biden administration. Most notable among those is the border restriction on non-essential travel. However, as restrictions have shifted and administrations have changed, it has become harder to keep track of the travel ban jungle and the COVID-related restrictions that have affected visa-holders and travelers to and from the United States during the pandemic.

Trumps Order Was Not Solely His Decision Nor Did It Fully Close The Us Off To China

China should stay neutral if North Korea attacks US, but will stop ...

Beijings airport as viewed from a departing Airbus A330 operated by China Eastern Airlines.

WASHINGTON Defending early missteps in the U.S. response to the coronavirus, President Donald Trump has repeatedly boasted of travel restrictions on China that he suggests he put in place on his own over the objections of health experts and saved thousands of lives.

His claims arent substantiated.

Were the ones that gave the great response, and were the ones that kept China out of here. ⦠If I didnt do that early call on China and nobody wanted that to happen. Everybody thought it was just unnecessary to do it, Trump said at a news briefing on Wednesday.

Everybody was against it, hed said on Fox News a day earlier. Almost everybody, I would say, was just absolutely against it. ⦠I made a decision to close off to China that was weeks early. ⦠And I must say, doctors nobody wanted to make that decision at the time.

At a news briefing on March 19 hed said: Ill tell you how prepared I was: I called for a ban.

His decision was far from a solo one, nor was it made over opposition from health experts, as the White House coronavirus task force makes clear. His decision followed a consensus by his public health advisers that the restrictions should take place.

As to the result of the decision, Trump has been out on a limb, saying, at a news briefing on Wednesday, And if we didnt do that, thousands and thousands of people would have died.

Did Joe Biden Call Trump Hysterical & Xenophobic For His Travel Restrictions

GettyFormer vice president and Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

Pence also claimed that Biden called Trumps travel restrictions xenophobic and hysterical during the debate. Nonpartisan fact-checkers, however, have pointed out that Bidens comments on Trump were made in the context of criticizing his general temperament when it comes to race.

According to Politifact, which drew on multiple outlets as sources, Biden did claim that Trump had a record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering around the time Trump announced the travel restrictions.

According to CNN, Bidens remarks were targeted at what he perceived as Trumps general racism, and made at a campaign stop, when he was not yet aware of the travel restrictions.

Conservative outlet The National Review disagreed, however, tying Bidens statement, as well as a concurrent tweet from the campaign, directly to Trumps travel policies.

Trump Biden Spin China Travel Restrictions

Both President Donald Trump and leading Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden are spinning the facts on the administrations coronavirus travel restrictions for those who had been in China.

Trump has repeatedly boasted, as he did on , that I stopped people from China very early very, very early from coming into our country. On April 1, Trump said that banning dangerous foreign travel that threatens the health of our people was one of the actions his administration took that was far earlier than anyone would have thought and way ahead of anybody else.

On ABCs This Week on April 5, Biden said 45 nations had already moved to restrict travel from China before the president moved. Said Biden, We started off awfully slow.

The U.S. did not act way ahead of anybody else in imposing travel restrictions from China, as Trump alleges, nor was it late getting into the act compared with other countries around the world, as Biden says.

ThinkGlobalHealth, a project of the Council on Foreign Relations, has been tracking the travel restrictions on China due to COVID-19. Its country-by-country analysis of the date and type of travel restrictions shows that in the days after the World Health Organization on Jan. 30 the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, 36 countries imposed travel restrictions, including the U.S., by Feb. 2.

Dueling Narratives

That contradicts the narratives of both Trump and Biden.

Moving to counter the spreading coronavirus outbreak, the Trump administration said Friday that it would bar entry by most foreign nationals who had recently visited China and put some American travelers under a quarantine as it declared a rare public health emergency.

The temporary restrictions followed announcements by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines that they would suspend air service between the United States and China for several months.

The travel disruption sent shocks through the stock market and rattled industries that depend on the flow of goods and people between the worlds two largest economies. Planning was upended for companies across a vast global supply chain, from Apple to John Deere, the tractor company.

The S& P 500 suffered its worst loss since October, falling 1.8 percent, as the spread of the virus and the increasingly urgent efforts by companies and governments to contain it fanned fears of an economic slowdown.

How Can Americans Of Good Conscience Not Come Together To Shut This Down

Watch President Donald Trump’s address to the nation on coronavirus pandemic

How is it possible those of us who see how wildly messed up this all is cant come together as one in condemnation? How is it possible for Republicans to continue supporting a malignant figure who would unleash his hateful hounds on them in a heartbeat?

As Trump and pathetic wannabes like Greene have committed outrage after outrage after outrage, each time sinking to new depths, theres a common refrain: Ignore them. Dont give them the attention they crave.

As Trump Administration Debated Travel Restrictions Thousands Streamed In From China

By Katherine Eban

– In defending his strategy against the deadly coronavirus, President Donald Trump repeatedly has said he slowed its spread into the United States by acting decisively to bar travelers from China on Jan. 31.

I was criticized by the Democrats when I closed the Country down to China many weeks ahead of what almost everyone recommended. Saved many lives, he tweeted, for instance, on March 2.

But Reuters has found that the administration took a month from the time it learned of the outbreak in late December to impose the initial travel restrictions amid furious infighting.

During that time, the National Security Council staff, the state department and other federal agencies argued about everything from how best to screen for sick travelers to the economic impact of any restrictions, according to two government officials familiar with the deliberations.

The NSC staff ultimately proposed aggressive travel restrictions to high-level administration officials – but it took at least a week more for the president to adopt them, one of the government officials said.

Each day that the administration debated the travel measures, roughly 14,000 travelers arrived in the United States from China, according to figures cited by the Trump administration. Among them was a traveler who came from Wuhan to Seattle in mid-January, who turned out to be the first confirmed case in the United States.

Delayed Travel Restrictions From China Failed To Contain The Coronavirus

By the time President Trump started implementing U.S. travel restrictions from China on February 2, nearly 40 countries had already enforced travel restrictions. The Marshall Islands was the first country to implement restrictions on all travelers coming from or traveling through China, on January 24. Anyone wishing to enter was required to spend at least fourteen days in a country not affected by the coronavirus prior to arriving in the Marshall Islands. Thirty-eight countries banned travel, barred noncitizens or canceled all flights from China before or on the same date as the United States, and 12 additional countries enforced a travel policy but with less restrictive policies, such as suspending visas.*

Because of Trumps late response, more than 430,000 people came to the United States from China after Chinese officials notified the U.S. administration of the seriousness of the Wuhan outbreaknearly 40,000 of whom arrived after Trumps restrictions went into effect.

One month later Donald Trump took office and in his first week, he signed an executive order imposing a travel ban on citizens of five Muslim-majority countries. One of those countries was Iran.

âFor the first couple of minutes we were all in denial. We thought: âThis is not going to happen ⦠Iâm legal here, sheâs applying for a tourist visa.â But then the visa process went on and on and on, and my kid was born⦠it was rough,â she says.

Republicans Keep Their Mouths Shut In Face Of Trump’s Hatefulness

MyRightWingDad.net

Any serious response from so-called reasonable Republican elected leaders? Nope.GOP Sen. Rick Scott, asked several times about Trump’s words, told CNN he doesn’t “condone violence” and added the useless, mealy mouthed comment: “I hope no one is racist.”

How courageous. Republican leaders wont say a thing, even to defend themselves, even when its clear Trump and his MAGA minions have loyalty only to themselves.

For the sizable swath of voters and politicians who remain loyal to Trump despite his falling approval numbers, this is not the behavior of a political party. This is the behavior of a cult: fealty to one individual zero tolerance for any who stray from the core beliefs threats of violence toward any who step out of line characterizing those who disagree as existential threats.

MAGA followers think you are not a Democrat you are a member of a party now actively killing Republicans. You are not a mainstream conservative you are a person with a death wish.

How Are Businesses And Colleges Affected

Theres panic in some US colleges and universities that have a large number of foreign students. Some students and faculty members fear theyll have to decide between careers or families. Some raced back to the United States as the executive order loomed, so they would be able to complete a degree. Now theyre left to wonder when theyll get to see their families again if they remain in the United States.

Theres hardship for those who planned to come to the States as well. Mahmoud Hassan, an 18-year-old Syrian in Damascus, accepted an offer to attend MIT earlier this year, but because of the ban, he said his dreams are basically ruined.

Trumps order sent shock waves through the business world, too, especially the tech industry. Apple CEO Tim Cook denounced the executive order and promised to help employees affected by it, adding that without immigration Apple would not exist. Google warned employees with a visa or green card from one of the banned countries to cancel any travel plans. Facebooks Mark Zuckerberg said the United States needs to keep its citizens safe, but should focus on people who actually pose a threat.
