What Time Will Trump Speak Tonight Your Guide To The Tuesday Congressional Address

Media elites to keep Trump-Russia Pulitzer prizes despite disinformation

President Donald Trump is expected to give a speech to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night at around 9 p.m. Eastern. While the speech isn’t technically a State of the Union address, its intent and style appear to be very similar to that of a State of the Union: The speech, noted CNN, is Trump’s attempt to sell Congress on his plans and show off his accomplishments, despite having a tumultuous first month in office.

In a press briefing on Feb. 22, press secretary Sean Spicer said the speech is intended to “remind the American people what done already” and that Trump plans to “lay out his vision.” The briefing also provided a long list to reporters on some of the topics Trump would touch upon, including healthcare and education. Spicer noted that the speech is “still a work in progress” and the goal is to bolster support for Trump’s upcoming plans and stabilize Trump’s image with Congress and the country.

Tuesday morning, the president stated that he and his team have struggled with messaging, telling Fox and Friends, “In terms of messaging, I would give myself a C or C-plus. … I don’t think we’ve explained it well enough to the American public.”

Networks like ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox will offer television coverage.

Highlights From Trump’s Speech

Trump arrived to a roaring crowd in Florida. Chants of “U-S-A” could be heard from the audience.

“We are bringing back our country and we are bringing back our freedom,” the former president promised, saying the “sleeping giant” of the conservative movement had been awoken.

He said Republican voters will “stand up to left-wing fascists” in the 2024 election.

Without evidence, Trump again repeated that the 2020 election was “stolen.”

An Associated Press review of every potential case of voter fraud in the six battleground states disputed by the former president has found fewer than 475, a number that would have made no difference in the 2020 election.

Jan. 6 panel has outtakes of Trump’s message day after riot

Trump kicked off his speech early and took hits at the Biden administration for inflation and foreign policy, among other issues. He incorrectly claimed he may have won the 2020 election in Ohio by more than 8 percentage points, which was the result certified by state election officials.

Trump also told the crowd they need to send Vance to the U.S. Senate and kept directing comments to “J.D.” throughout his remarks.

House Democrats Pass Bill Protecting Same

Most Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives voted against the Democrats Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that protects current same-sex marriages and partially codifies same-sex marriage into law, but does not make the right to marry for same-sex couples the law of the land.

The bill passed 267-157, with 47 Republicans joining Democrats to protect marriage. No Democrats voted no. Among the Republicans voting yes were Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

The bill was drafted after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last month, which had made the right to abortion the law of the land. Justice Clarence Thomas strongly suggested the Court should rescind the right of same-sex couples to marry, have intimate relations, and the right to contraception.

READ MORE:

HR 8404, the Respect for Marriage Act, repeals the Defense of Marriage Act, which the U.S. Supreme Court effectively overruled in its 2013 Windsor decision and 2015 decision in Obergefell, which did make same-sex marriage the law of the land. DOMA banned the federal government from recognizing marriages of same-sex couples and allowed states the ability to not recognize them as well.

The Respect for Marriage Act requires states to recognize any marriage of lawfully performed in any other state, but does not require states to legalize same-sex marriage. It bans states from discriminating against marriages on the basis of the sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin of those individuals.

Fact Check: 20000 Migrant Children Brought Illegally Into The Us In December

TRUMP CLAIM: Last month, 20,000 migrant children were illegally brought into the United States.

FACT CHECK: Probably True. According to CBP, 4,982 unaccompanied minors were apprehended at the border in October 2018, and November, 5,283 were caught. In addition, family units — that is, individuals apprehended with a family member by the U.S. Border Patrol — numbered 23,115 in October and 25,172 in November. Assuming that each “family unit” contains at least one child, that means that the numbers of children are well above the 20,000 number cited by the president tonight.

Read Trump’s Full Remarks

Here are the president’s full remarks from his Tuesday evening Oval Office address:

My fellow Americans: Tonight, I am speaking to you because there is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border. Every day, Customs and Border Patrol agents encounter thousands of illegal immigrants trying to enter our country. We are out of space to hold them, and we have no way to promptly return them back home to their country. America proudly welcomes millions of lawful immigrants who enrich our society and contribute to our nation. But all Americans are hurt by uncontrolled, illegal migration. It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages. Among those hardest hit are African Americans and Hispanic Americans.

Our southern border is a pipeline for vast quantities of illegal drugs, including meth, heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl. Every week, 300 of our citizens are killed by heroin alone, 90 percent of which floods across from our southern border. More Americans will die from drugs this year than were killed in the entire Vietnam War. In the last two years, ICE officers made 266,000 arrests of aliens with criminal records, including those charged or convicted of 100,000 assaults, 30,000 sex crimes, and 4,000 violent killings. Over the years, thousands of Americans have been brutally killed by those who illegally entered our country, and thousands more lives will be lost if we don’t act right now.

Ohio Republicans Get Shout Outs

Former high-ranking Trump official will testify at Jan. 6 hearing

Trump thanked a slate of Republicans for their work in Ohio, including Secretary of State Frank LaRose and auditor Keith Faber. He applauded LaRose specifically for his role in the state’s redistricting process.

He didn’t acknowledge the candidates running for governor this year, but he made a reference to “this terrible governor that you had” when talking about former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who ran against Trump in the 2016 GOP primary. Trump also praised Ohio Republican Party chair Bob Paduchik.

Trump Campaign Fundraises Ahead Of Speech

The Trump campaign sent an email to supporters Tuesday afternoon ahead of Mr. Trump’s speech in the Oval Office, encouraging supporters to reach the fundraising goal of $500,000 by the end of the night to “do something so HUGE, even Democrats and the Fake News won’t be able to ignore.”

Mr. Trump said that the topics of his speech this evening would be the drugs “poisoning our loved ones,” MS-13 gang members, and “illegal criminals” who are “flooding our nation.”

“I want to make one thing clear to Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi: Your safety is not a political game or a negotiation tactic!” the email said, in the voice of Mr. Trump.

It also said that the campaign would be gathering information on everyone who donated to the “Official Secure the Border Fund.”

“I want to know who stood with me when it mattered most so I’ve asked my team to send me a list of EVERY AMERICAN PATRIOT who donates to the Official Secure the Border Fund,” the email concluded.

Presidential Candidates Plan To Take Voters Questions In Nationally Televised Events On Rival Networks

President and former Vice President plan to respond to voters in live nationally televised town-hall events on Thursday, after an originally scheduled presidential debate was canceled. The town halls are to air at the same time on rival networks.

Organizers initially changed the second debate, which was scheduled for Miami this evening, to a virtual format after Mr. Trump tested positive for Covid-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus. The Republican nominees campaign refused to agree to a virtual debate, and the event was canceled. As the pandemic continues to rattle the campaign, Democratic vice-presidential nominee Kamala Harris canceled campaign travel after an aide tested positive for coronavirus out of an abundance of caution, said Mr. Bidens campaign manager, Jen OMalley Dillon. The next presidential debate is scheduled for Oct. 22 in Nashville, Tenn.
