Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, both practicing Orthodox Jews and two of the most abruptly powerful outsiders in Washington, will break religious tradition to fly with President Donald Trump Friday aboard Air Force One to Saudi Arabia.

The two received a rabbinical pass for their weekend travels, an official permission to break from the prohibitions on Shabbat that are generally reserved for life-threatening instances and other situations concerning one’s safety. Observant Orthodox Jews abstain from using motor vehicles and other mechanical transportation methods, as well as electronics and other activities prohibited by Jewish law, from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.

Apart from their mere presence in the capital, which raises nepotism concerns among critics, the new political powerhouse couple have routinely put aside religious norms to maintain their influence and roles in the new administration, Politico reported Friday.

Daughter Of Billionaire Donald Trump Talks To Vogue Magazine About How Converting Has Blessed Her Family Life

Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner Break Orthodox Jewish ...

Stuart Winer is a breaking news editor at The Times of Israel.

Ivanka Trump, the model-turned-businesswoman, has spoken up about her conversion to Judaism and how it has improved her family life.

In an interview with Vogue magazine published last week, the daughter of business mogul Donald Trump revealed that she and her husband, Jared Kushner, keep Shabbat, including not using their telephones on the day of rest.

âWe observe the Sabbath,â Trump said. âFrom Friday to Saturday we donât do anything but hang out with one another. We donât make phone calls.â

The subject of her conversion, which Trump, 33, admits she has preferred to keep out of the public eye, came up during a meeting with reporter Jonathan Van Meter in the Trump SoHo hotel. As waiters brought over food, Trump noted, We donât eat meat or, well, we keep kosher.

The mother of two then went on to speak more about life after her 2009 conversion, a move she made because husband Kushners family are Orthodox Jews, but has since been kept discreet. Trumps father, Donald, is a Presbyterian Christian.

I just feel like itâs such an intimate thing for us,â said Trump, who is reported to have taken the moniker Yael, a popular Jewish womens name. Yael was an Old Testament woman who, according to the story from Judges 5:24-27, killed enemy general Sisera by driving a tent peg though his head, enabling the Israelites to gain victory in a war.

Ivanka Trump A Convert Is The World’s Most Influential Jew

After marrying Jared Kushner in 2009 and converting to Judaism, Ivanka Trump is now the world’s most influential Jew, surpassing other famous figures such as Wonder Woman Gal Gadot and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who have taken the remaining top two spots in a list of the 50 most influential Jews published this week by The Jerusalem Post.

The newspaper released its annual ranking highlighting “those who share one unifying bottom line: someone who has the power to shape his or her community and surrounding communities.” Named the “ultimate Jewish power couple,” Trump tops the list alongside Kushner, who was raised in an Orthodox family.

“In their first six months as presidential advisers, Ivanka and Jared led a resistance within the West Wing against forces they considered too far right of the American political consensusand won,” the Post opens a full article dedicated to the couple. The piece goes on to say that “they are not natural public servants. Neither Ivanka nor Jared sought roles in the government But so long as they remain, they will continue to advise Trump on every policy issue.”

Last year, Ivanka Trump and Kushner reached the fourth spot on the annual list. At the time, the Post described the couple as “the most important advisers to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.”

Can Donald Trump Be Anti

Donald Trumps victory has emboldened a wave of anti-Semitism not seen in the United States for decades. But Trumps defenders often distance him from the rise in anti-Jewish rhetoric and say the president-elect cannot possibly share the views many of his followers proclaim for this simple reason: He has Jewish family.

His daughter Ivanka Trump underwent an Orthodox conversion before her 2009 marriage to Jared Kushner, who was raised observant. Their three children Trumps grandchildren are full Jews according to Jewish law. See? Could an anti-Semite have a Jewish daughter?

In short, Yes.

The idea that having a child who converts precludes distrust or even hatred toward the childs chosen faith is as facile as the idea that you cannot be anti-Semitic because you do business with Jews, have Jewish friends, or are Jewish yourself.

As someone who spent the last year researching a book on religious conversion and as a convert to Judaism myself I can tell you its far more complicated. When a child converts, family members often feel deeply ambivalent about the perceived personal rejection, about the childs religious stance in an increasingly secular world, and about the childs chosen faith specifically.

Of course, an alternate reading of these reactions is that parents do harbor negative feelings toward their childs chosen faith, and they try to cover up those biases.

On January 6, 2021, during the riot at the U.S. Capitol, Ivanka encouraged her father to make a video on condemning the riots, acting as an intermediary between besieged U.S. officials and the President. She tweeted a request for “peaceful” behavior in which she addressed the rioters as “American Patriots.” Minutes later, she deleted the tweet. Her pushing for an apology was seen as an attempt to salvage the Trump brand and allow for post-presidential careers for the family, possibly political ones, as possible legal threats or impeachment may damage the family’s reputation.
