Lawyers In Trump White House To Appear Before 1/6 Grand Jury

WASHINGTON The White House counsel under former President Donald Trump and his top deputy are set to appear Friday before a federal grand jury investigating efforts to undo the 2020 presidential election, a person familiar with the matter said Thursday.

Pat Cipollone was the top White House lawyer at the end of the Trump administration as Trump and outside allies pressed for ways to overturn the results of the election, culminating in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Cipollone vigorously resisted efforts to undo the election and has said he did not believe there was sufficient fraud to have affected the outcome of the race won by Democrat Joe Biden.

He and Patrick Philbin, a deputy White House counsel also set to appear before the grand jury, have already cooperated with a separate House committee probe investigating the Jan. 6 attack and attempts to subvert the election.

The person who confirmed their appearance before the grand jury was not authorized to discuss the matter and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. ABC News was first to report the appearance. Spokespeople for the Justice Department declined to comment.

The scheduled grand jury appearances underscore how Justice Department officials examining schemes to overturn the presidential contest have been seeking the cooperation of senior White House officials and advisers who opposed those efforts.

Trump Mastered Twitter Early On To Attack Political Opponents

He distinguished himself from a large field of Republican contenders with strong and stinging rhetoric often communicated through the social network Twitter. He employed similar rhetoric against Hillary Clinton, whom he accused of committing crimes by using a private web server for email correspondence when she was secretary of state.

Trump began his campaign by claiming that the U.S. was being overrun by illegal immigrants who committed crimes and by promising to build a huge wall on Americas southern border to keep them out. Trump mustered support among Republicans by his opposition to the Affordable Care Act , which he promised to repeal.

He questioned U.S. trade policies, said that Americas allies needed to contribute more to their own defense, opposed governmental regulations that he thought were interfering with economic growth, and was far friendlier to Russian leader Vladimir Putin and other foreign strongmen than his predecessor was.

Trump, who had never before held elective office, was arguably aided by the perception that he offered an alternative to politics as it was and by leaks from the Democratic National Campaign headquarters.

Trump was combative during the presidential debates, in one case launching a sharp attack against moderator and then-Fox News reporter Megyn Kelly.

What Happens When You Send An Email

In most cases, you will initially receive a canned response from the government. You may get a response from the government office that you emailed, but the response is usually written by staff members.

In rare cases, you may receive an email from the actual government official. Again, this is rare. Given the volume of emails they receive, it is usually not feasible for the official to personally respond to messages.

The following will help you get in touch with various members of the U.S. government via email:

British Elections Send A Message To Trump Gop And Bidens Democrats

If Donald Trump were at all self-reflective, he would probably be kicking himself right now as he surveys the results of last weeks British elections. Through his own mistakes and obstinance in his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, he might conclude that he kicked away his chance to serve a second term in the White House.

These were the first elections in Britain since Boris Johnson became prime minister in 2019 and Johnsons Conservative Party came out winning, both in local races and in a signature victory in a working-class, parliamentary district in northeast England long held by the Labour Party.

Johnson, like Trump, mishandled the early stages of the pandemic. Like the former U.S. president, he contracted covid-19, and had a far worse case, having been hospitalized and in intensive care for a time. But his later handling of the pandemic was less uneven, and this year Britain stepped farther and faster in administering vaccinations than other European nations. It helped.

The British elections were not purely about the coronavirus pandemic, but nothing in politics today is free from the viruss effects in health, economic well-being and the public mood. On the most important issue of campaign 2020, Trump was a victim of his own making.

As Republicans debate Trumps role and what it means to be a conservative, Johnson, like Trump, is rewriting the rules of what conservatism means.

Biden At Independence Hall: Trump And Allies Threaten Democracy

  • Zeke Miller and Josh Boak
  • Updated Sep. 1, 2022 8:07 pm

President Joe Biden warned Thursday night that equality and democracy are under assault in the U.S. as he sounded an alarm about his predecessor, Donald Trump, and MAGA Republican adherents, labeling them an extremist threat to the nation and its future.

Aiming to reframe the November elections as part of a battle for the nations soul the work of my presidency Biden used his prime-time speech at Independence Hall in Philadelphia to argue that Trump and the Make America Great Again allies who now lead the Republican Party are a menace to the nations system of government, its standing abroad and its citizens way of life.

Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic, Biden declared. He said they are determined to take this country backward, they promote authoritarian leaders and they fan the flames of political violence.

The explicit effort by Biden to marginalize Trump and his adherents marks a sharp turn for the president, who preached his desire to bring about national unity in his Inaugural address. White House officials said it reflects his mounting concern about Trump allies ideological proposals and relentless denial of the nations 2020 election results.

Circuit Court Ruled Trump’s Travel Ban Discriminated Based On Religion

As a candidate, Trump referred often to radical Islamic terrorists. As president, Trump issued two orders banning immigration from a select number of countries, all with Muslim majorities. After a number of federal courts enjoined the first order, Trump issued a second.

In International Refugee Assistance Project v. Trump , the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the law improperly discriminated on the basis of religion, largely using Trumps own campaign statements and tweets as evidence of what the Court considered to be the orders discriminatory purpose. In Trump v. Hawaii, 585 U.S. ____ , however, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Presidents broad authority to impose restrictions on immigrants from foreign countries when he thought they posed special security dangers.

Election And The Attack On The Capitol Building

The Republicans renominated Trump for president, and Joe Biden, Obamas former vice-president, emerged from a wide field to be the Democratic nominee. Biden selected as his running mate Senator Kamala Harris of California, whose mother was from India and whose father was African- American.

As the election approached, COVID-19, a virus that originated in China, began infecting an increasing number of Americans and taking an increasing number of lives. Trump downplayed the deaths, claiming that the virus would disappear. He refused to wear face masks and did not insist that supporters do so at his campaign rallies even after he was briefly hospitalized with the disease.

Largely as a result of the pandemic, many states liberalized voting so that more people could cast mail-in ballots rather than physically go to a polling place. Trump charged that this would lead to voting fraud.

Many states decided to count mail-in ballots after they finished counting votes cast in person on election day. Trump, who had urged his own supporters to vote in person on election day, was shown with an early lead as vote-counting began. This lead evaporated as more votes were counted. Although the election was held on Tuesday, it was not until that Friday that news outlets were comfortable in reporting that Biden had won both the popular vote and the majority of the Electoral College.

Contact The White House By Phone

Even though you arent able to email the President, you can call the White House. However, to be clear, you will likely only speak with a member of the staff. To call, use the following phone numbers:

  • For general comments, call 202-456-1111
  • To reach the switchboard, call 202-456-1414
  • For TTY/TTD, use Comments: 202-456-6213 or the Visitors Office: 202-456-2121

Lets face it, it is highly unlikely that you will get to speak with any sitting POTUS directly on the phone.

Efforts To Obstruct Justice

This is likely to be the crucial difference, possibly alongside No. 1, if Trump is ever charged.

As mentioned earlier, Trump resisted returning these documents. He didnt return them even after one of his attorneys agreed last year that they should be returned. His attorney also signed a document in June stating that all documents marked as classified had been returned, according to the Times. And the government cited the likelihood that it would find evidence of obstruction to obtain the search warrant.

Precisely what the government believes might rise to the level of obstruction, well have to see.

As for Clinton, she testified to Congress about her private email server as part of the Benghazi hearings. She sat with the FBI in a voluntary interview for more than three hours. She also turned over tens of thousands of emails.

Her critics, including Trump, have long suggested that she engaged in a coverup by virtue of her and her team deleting many other emails and destroying phones. Comey said Clintons team turned over 30,000 emails deemed to be work-related after sorting through the documents using headers and word searches, rather than reviewing each one individually. This has long been used to suggest that the effort was nefarious often using hyperbolic language involving bleach and acid but there is no evidence it was.

Donald Trump Really Wants You To Text His Name To 88022 But Will He Ever Text Back

Trump, Jordan spoke by phone the morning of Jan. 6, records show

At Donald Trump rallies and news conferences, the invocation is very often printed in the cameras lines of sight to ensure maximum exposure:

Text Trump to 88022

If you assumed this is a fundraising ploy, youd be wrong. The Republican presidential front-runner is self-funding his campaign, remember?

Instead of money, Trump ostensibly wants a channel to communicate directly with voters. His website advertises exclusive updates for those who subscribe to the texting service.

One problem: Trump doesnt seem to use the service very often.

Two weeks ago, on the day of the Wisconsin primary, I signed up and prepared for The Donald to Make My iPhone Great Again with the exclusive updates I had been promised. Heres how it went.

And then nothing for 14 days.

Last week, Fix colleague Philip Bump had the good idea to subscribe using a New York ZIP code to see whether the Trump campaign might be targeting residents of the Empire State ahead of the primary. He got nothing for five days.

Finally, on primary day Tuesday, the first exclusive updates arrived.

Later, after I asked the campaign about its use or underuse of the text line, both Bump and I received this message.

What. A. Waste.

Maybe, in another message, Trump could ask subscribers to name the No. 1 issue in the campaign: Text A for immigration, B for terrorism, C for trade, D for gun rights.

Heres what Buell recommends:

Clearly Intentional And Willful Mishandling Of Classified Information

This was the portion of Comeys decision that was most disputed in Clintons case.

The applicable law, the Espionage Act, states that it is a crime to remove national defense information from its proper place of custody through gross negligence. But Comey indicated that Clintons alleged misconduct had to be clearly intentional and willful to bring a prosecution a standard many critics at the time complained was higher than gross negligence because it required intent. Comey even said in the same news conference that Clinton had been extremely careless, which sounds a lot like grossly negligent.

But if were arguing about applying the Clinton standard, clearly intentional and willful mishandling is that standard.

Comey said Clinton and others should have known better than to potentially expose this information on a private server, but we did not find clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the handling of classified information.

He said at a hearing two days later that there was insufficient proof that Clinton intended to obscure her emails. Our best information is that she set it up as a matter of convenience, he said, echoing Clintons own justification. But there were reasons to doubt the arrangement arose strictly out of convenience, The Washington Posts Fact Checker found, citing the holes in Clintons various explanations.

As The Post reported last week in a thorough review of the known facts:
