Trump’s Education And Wharton Degree

Jared Kushners Rise to Power Mirrors Donald Trumps

Donald Trump attended East Coast private schools throughout his life. First the private Kew-Forest School, from kindergarten through seventh grade, in the New York City borough of Queens. Concerned about his behavior, Trump’s parents next sent him to New York Military Academy, a private boarding school in upstate New York.

During his senior year, Trump was promoted to captain among the student cadets. After graduating, Trump returned to New York City. He enrolled at Fordham University, a Jesuit and Catholic college in the Bronx.

After two years, Trump transferred to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, an Ivy League school. Trump’s younger brother, Fred Trump Jr., secured Donald an interview with a Penn admissions officer who was one of his close friends, The Washington Post reported. Fred Trump Sr. accompanied his son to the interview.

In my opinion, degree doesnt prove very much, but a lot of people I do business with take it very seriouslyDonald Trump, The Art of the Deal

Trump graduated from Penn in 1968 with a bachelor of science in economics from The Wharton School, then called Wharton School of Finance. In 1973, a year before Trump became president of the conglomerate that would be The Trump Organization, The New York Times reported Trump graduated “first in his class” from The Wharton School.

Trump’s performance as a student remains highly contested. For Trump himself, it’s mostly about what a high-powered degree signals to others.

Tiffany Trump Graduated From This Law School In 2020

Tiffany Trump attended the University of Pennsylvania, right in line with her father, older brother, and older sister. Interestingly, she attended with Naomi Biden, granddaughter of former vice president Joe Biden. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported both he and Donald Trump were present at the 2016 graduation.

After graduation, Tiffany opted for law school at what we can only assume is the lone acceptable alternative to Penn for a Trump child: Georgetown University. She graduated in May 2020 , and though she has not announced any specific plans to take the bar exam or work at a law firm, she did hint that she might be joining the family business during a 2016 ABC News interview. Of course, Im interested. Im applying to law school though so I like to bring a different kinda skill set to the company, she said.

Donald Trump seemed delighted at the prospect of Tiffany getting herself a JD. He tweeted out, Great student, great school. Just what I need is a lawyer in the family. Proud of you Tiff, when he congratulated her on her graduation.

The Ivy League School That Wont Talk About Its Most Famous Graduate

The University of Pennsylvania wanted a president. Trump was the one it got.

For 176 years, William Henry Harrison was the only president the University of Pennsylvania had any kind of claim on, and even then it was kind of a stretch. As a student, Harrison did a brief stint at Penn, but he didnt stay long enough to get a degree. And he only lasted a month in office, dying of pneumonia in April of 1841. Ever since then, Penn has waited, as Harvard, Yale, and other of its Ivy League peers sent alumnus after alumnus to the Oval Office.

Then, in November 2016, Penns fortunes changed, when Donald J. Trump, class of 68, won the presidency. The university, though, has never formally celebrated this accomplishment. On Monday, Penns administration convened upward of 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students for commencement, and did what it has been doing for most of the past three years: not talk about Donald Trump. Other things it did not do include having Trump deliver a speech or giving him an honorary degree.

Im not the only journalist whos had trouble getting an official comment. Dan Spinelli, who reported on Penn and Trump for The Daily Pennsylvanian, told me about his struggle to get officials to talk on the record. Spinelli wrote a piece in Politico magazine that described, among other things, an email that administrators sent to Wharton faculty, asking them not to speak to any reporters who wanted to discuss Trump.

Melania Trump Reportedly Attended This University But Didn’t Graduate

Trump effect on MBA programs and top US MBA applicants

On her now-defunct website MelaniaTrump.com, First Lady Melania Trump claimed to have obtained “a degree in design and architecture at University in Slovenia,” according to Snopes. The problem is there is no University of Slovenia. Other reports have been shared about her having attended the University of Ljubljana instead, but there’s no record of her graduation.

According to PolitiFact, Melania lied in a 2013 deposition about her also defunct caviar skin cream line, repeating the claim she’d gotten a degree. The program for the 2016 Republican National Convention similarly mentioned Melania having graduated from the University of Ljubljana, according to CBS News.CBS News discredited the claim and maintained she has no degree.

A GQ interview with Melania claimed she “applied to the school of architecture at the local university, successfully passing the notoriously difficult entrance exams,” but does not mention her earning a diploma and instead notes she “effectively out” after a year to focus on modeling.

Six Years Of Trump University End In Lawsuits

On the heels of business ventures that spanned construction, casinos, TV shows, and beauty pageants, Trump launched the for-profit Trump University to teach real estate investing in 2005. He told reporters at the time that he hoped to establish a “legacy as an educator.”

Trump claimed the curriculum was developed by faculty from Northwestern, Stanford, and Columbia Business School. All three schools distanced themselves from Trump University when questioned by reporters, some admitting individual faculty may have been involved.

Trump University began by offering online courses, then moved to in-person seminars. In a double bid to get students to start investing and to sign up for premium programs, instructors urged students to use their savings and increase their credit card limits, according to alumni.

While initial seminars were free of charge, top-tier programs cost up to $35,000

While initial seminars were free of charge, top-tier programs cost up to $35,000. Though at that point more expensive than the average online bachelor’s degree, Trump University did not award diplomas and was not an accredited university. In 2010, the New York Education Department warned Trump University that its use of the word “university” in its name violated the states education laws.

The New York attorney general sued the company, accusing it of scamming students. Two class action lawsuits alleged the school defrauded students through misleading marketing and aggressive sales tactics.

Mystery #: After Two Years At Fordham University Did Trump Need Special Treatment To Gain Admission To Wharton

The answer begins with James A. Nolan, the Penn admissions officer who interviewed Trump and ushered his application through the vetting process, which he says he did at the behest of Trumps older brother, Fred Trump Jr. Nolan grew up in Queens and had been friends with Fred since high school in the mid-1950s. During an interview at his apartment on Washington Square, Nolan told me he spent a lot of time in those days at the Trump McMansion in Jamaica Estates, which he described as very big, with lots of bedrooms and blackface lawn jockeys lining the approach. Both friends planned to enroll at Penn, but only Nolan got accepted. Ten years later, Nolan was working in Penns admissions department he would later become director of undergraduate admissions when Fred called in a favor.

This was first revealed in Gwenda Blairs book The Trumps: Three Generations That Built an Empire . Whether that was 100 percent why he got in, I dont know, but clearly it was helpful, Blair told me. Blair says that at Nolans request she kept his identity a secret until earlier this summer, when Nolan granted interviews to the Washington Post and this magazine.

Nolan is adamant: Trump wasnt accepted to Wharton solely on his say-so. Both the head of transfer student admissions and the vice dean reviewed Trumps application and Nolans interview notes before giving final approval.

Donald Trumps Brother Fred Trump Jr Graduated From Lehigh

Donald Trumps oldest brother, Fred Trump Jr., didnt go to the University of Pennsylvanias famous Wharton School. He actually graduated from Lehigh University in 1960, according to The Washington Post. He also had ambitions of being a TWA pilot, studying up on aviation books while his father berated him for trying to be a chauffeur in the sky, according to the Washington Post story. Ultimately, he gave up on that dream, and opted instead to work in the family business.

Notably, while Fred didnt go to Wharton School to study business, he was, however, friends with James Nolan, an admissions officer at Wharton, who was instrumental in getting Donald Trump into the University of Pennsylvania. He called me and said, You remember my brother Donald? Which I didnt, Nolan said in an interview with The Washington Post . He said, Hes at Fordham and he would like to transfer to Wharton. Will you interview him?’ Nolan agreed to the interview, which Donald attended with his father, Fred Trump Sr. The admissions officer gave him a rating that was decent enough to support his candidacy, and Donald finished his college years at Penn.

Mystery #: Did One Of His Wharton Professors Repeatedly Tell Friends And Associates That Donald Trump Was The Dumbest Goddamn Student I Ever Had

Donald Trump Jr. speaks out on Hunter Biden-Ukraine scandal

Its rare for a professor to disparage the intelligence of a student, but according to attorney Frank DiPrima, who was close friends with professor William T. Kelley for 47 years, the prof made an exception for Donald Trump, at least in private. He must have told me that 100 times over the course of 30 years, says DiPrima, who has been practicing law since 1963 and has served as in-house counsel for entities including the Federal Trade Commission and Playboy Enterprises. I remember the inflection of his voice when he said it: Donald Trump was the dumbest goddamn student I ever had! He would say that came to Wharton thinking he already knew everything, that he was arrogant and he wasnt there to learn. Kelley, who passed away in 2011 at age 94, taught marketing at Wharton for 31 years, retiring in 1982.

As Trump admitted in The Art of the Deal, all he got out of Wharton was bragging rights: In my opinion, that degree doesnt prove very much, but a lot of people I do business with take it very seriously, and its considered very prestigious. So all things considered, Im glad I went to Wharton.

Mystery #: Did Trump Attempt To Date Penn Student Candice Bergen And Get Shot Down

Prior to flunking out in 1965, Ms. Bergen was the It Girl at Penn, elected both Homecoming Queen and Miss University. Her proto-screen-siren star power was apparently visible in the night sky from as far away as New York, because one evening, the phone in her dorm rang, and on the other end was one Donald Trump, pre-Wharton. I was 18, Bergen told Harry Connick Jr. back in 2017. He was a nice-looking guy, I mean, he was. And I was in college, and its where he was going to be going to college. It was like a blind date. He called me in the dorm. And I was bored. So he picked me up. He was wearing a burgundy three-piece suit with burgundy patent leather boots, and he was in a burgundy limousine, so it was very color- coordinated. It was a short date: I was home by nine. She expanded on her account a few days later on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen: He was a good-looking guy. And a douche. I was home very early. She stressed that there was no kiss, no physical contact whatsoever. Within a year, Ms. Bergen, who politely declined to participate in this article, was a movie star on track for a storied career and never looked back.

Mystery #: What Is Known About Ivankas Penn Stint Beyond The Fact That After Two Years At Georgetown She Transferred To Wharton Where Unlike Her Father She Graduated Cum Laude In 2004

Like her dad, Ivanka has been the subject of a DP story wherein nobody from her graduating class seems to have gotten to know her. Back in April of 2017, the DP reached out to 600 graduates from the class of 2004 and came up with not that much. Most described her as polished, hardworking and nice. Roland Oliver told the DP: She came to the school, and did her part, and left.

What else? She lived in the Left Bank apartments, near 32nd and Walnut streets. Another 2004 Wharton graduate, Roman Galas, told the DP that he saw her at Smokes once, sitting across from me at the bar, sipping her drink peacefully and gracefully. She was occasionally spotted at White Dog Cafe and La Terrasse as well as in Rittenhouse Square.

A rumor made the rounds on campus that a breakup drove her from Georgetown to Penn midstream, but she denied it in a 2004 Philadelphia profile in which she described her life at Penn as hermetic and was characterized as more likely to binge-watch Law & Order than to trip the light fandango on the beer-sticky dance floors of the frat-party circuit. That job would be left to her half-sister, Tiffany.

Donald Trump

The former president often boasts of his academic record such as attending Penn’s Wharton School, which in Trump’s own words is “the greatest business school.”

  • The former president went to Fordham before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania.
  • He earned an economics degree from Penn’s prestigious Wharton School.

Donald Trump is proud of his bachelor’s degree from the prestigious Wharton School. The business school is considered among the top in the world. But in his 1987 bestseller “The Art of the Deal,” Trump wrote, “Perhaps the most important thing I learned at Wharton was not to be overly impressed by academic credentials.”

Despite Trump’s misgivings about the value of higher education, he opened his own Trump University, a real estate-investing program that went defunct in 2011 amid multiple lawsuits.

President Trump has temporarily suspended the issuing of new H-1B work visas for foreign workers seeking employment in the United States. Its the latest in a string of anti-immigration policies intended to curtail the number of foreign workers in the US.

The executive order also bans the issuing of new L visas. The L-1 visa was a useful alternative to the H-1B Visa for foreign workers looking to work in the US. It allows migrants to be employed for a US company with global operations and return to work for the company in the States.

Under the order, American companies with operations overseas and overseas companies with operations in the US are unable to transfer foreign executives and other employees to the United States for months or year-long contracts.

Officials have said that together with green card restrictions as many as 525,000 foreign workers could be kept out of the country until the end of 2020, when the current restriction ends.
