Will Pence Be Trump’s Running Mate 2020

Trump Pence Rivalry Intensifies As They Consider 2024 Runs

WATCH: President Trump asks Pence to be 2020 running mate

NEW YORK Former Vice President Mike Pence is becoming increasingly brazen in his willingness to counter former President Donald Trump.

The two will hold dueling events in Arizona on Friday as they stump for rival candidates who offer dramatically different visions of the Republican Party in a critical battleground state. Days later, they will once again cross paths as they deliver major speeches on the same day in Washington, D.C.

The encounters mark a more confrontational phase in the fraught relationship between the former running mates and once close confidantes who could soon find themselves competing against one another in the 2024 GOP presidential primary if they both ultimately choose to run.

I think this is a continuation of the larger message that Pence is trying to embody here, which is the Republican Party should look to the future, said Scott Jennings, a longtime party strategist. This is going to be the existential question for the Republican Party: Are we going to listen to a slightly different view than Donald Trumps? Right now, the standard-bearer for this is Mike Pence.

That description marks a striking turnaround for Pence, who spent his four years in the White House as Trumps most loyal defender. But Trump turned on his vice president when Pence refused to go along with his unconstitutional efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, putting Pence in the crosshairs of a violent mob on Jan. 6.

Theyre All Begging Me: Trumps 2024 Veep Tryouts Get Underway

The question of Trumps prospective choice of running mate is surfacing with increasing frequency.

The last time Donald Trump picked a running mate, he made a conventional choice in Mike Pence a relatively safe decision with traditional presidential ticket-balancing in mind.

But as Trump gears up for a 2024 bid to recapture the White House, the nascent thinking at Mar-a-Lago surrounding his potential vice president is considerably different. According to conversations with a dozen Trump advisers and close associates, the former president doesnt feel bound by geographic or ideological considerations or any standard political rules at all.

Those familiar with his thinking say his selection will be determined by two factors that rate highest in Trumps estimation: unquestioned loyalty and an embrace of the former presidents baseless claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

A lot of times, a presidential candidate will pick a running mate to balance out wings of the party. But with Trump, thats not the issue. He is the party, basically. Its so united behind him, said John McLaughlin, one of Trumps campaign pollsters. So his choice, if he runs, will come down to what he wants. It would be a much more personal decision this time.

Theyre all begging me. They all come here, Trump boasted to one adviser, who shared the account anonymously with POLITICO.

Kellyanne Conway, a top Trump adviser, echoed Caputo.

Does Trump Want To Run With Pence

According to people familiar with the matter, Trump’s close advisers want him to choose someone other than Mike Pence for the ticket. According to latest reports, Trump has allegedly privately discussed alternatives to Pence since he apparently knows best who was by his side till the end of his term.

Trumps advisers are considering a Black or female running mate for his next run, and three of the people familiar with the matter reportedly said Pence is likely to not get the ticket. At the same time, former Trump campaign advisor Jason Miller tweeted, “This is fake news. No such conversations are happening.”

AMES, Iowa For months, former Vice President Mike Pence has been edging away from his alliance of convenience with former President Donald J. Trump.

After four years of service bordering on subservience, the increasingly emboldened Mr. Pence is seeking to reintroduce himself to Republican voters ahead of a potential presidential bid by setting himself apart from what many in the G.O.P. see as the worst impulses of Mr. Trump. Hes among a small group in his party considering a run in 2024 no matter what Mr. Trump decides.

Mr. Pence first used high-profile speeches to criticize the former presidents push to overturn the 2020 election results, stating flatly that Mr. Trump was wrong in his assertion that Mr. Pence could have blocked the Electoral College ratification on Jan. 6, 2021. Mr. Pence then unsubtly visited the Charlottesville, Va., memorial to Heather Heyer, who was killed in the 2017 white supremacist riot there that Mr. Trump sought to rationalize by faulting both sides.

In a statement ahead of Mr. Pences visit to Georgia, Mr. Trump belittled his vice president through a spokesman.

Former Vp Mike Pence: No Room In This Party For Apologists For Putin

I was disappointed in Mike.

It is unclear if Trump will run again for president in the 2024 election, but he has repeatedly hinted at the possibility. He is expected to make an official announcement following this falls midterm elections.

In recent weeks, Pence has also raised some questions about whether he is planning to run, refusing to rule out the possibility earlier this month.

All my focus right now is on 2022, Pence told Fox Business Networks Maria Bartiromo. I think we have a historic opportunity to reclaim majorities in the House and Senate, to elect great Republican governors around America and, in 2023, Im confident the Republican Party will nominate a candidate who will be the next president of the United States of America and at the right time, my family and I will reflect and consider how we might participate in that process.

His comments came after Bartiromo asked the former vice president if he wants to see Trump run again.

But now more than ever, with war in Europe and with an administration seemingly intent on weakening our country, driving our nation toward a European-style welfare state, we need strong Republican majorities on Capitol Hill and strong Republican governors and thats what we are going to work to achieve, Pence said.

Pence Scrambles As Trump Considers New Running Mate For 2020

Mike Pence has already had to deal with rumors that he is going to be replaced on the ticket by Nikki Haley.

Trump is still privately questioning whether to keep Mike Pence as his running mate, Yahoo News reported on Thursday.

“Behind the scenes, tensions have been mounting among Trump, Pence and their top advisers ever since the GOPs resounding losses in the 2018 midterms,” the outlet reported.

After the party lost control of the House and Democrats secured a historic popular vote victory over the GOP, Trump “asked aides about replacing Pence.”

According to Yahoo, Trump hasn’t let go of his concerns and during his August vacation at his New Jersey golf resort, Trump advisers say he continued to ask about how removing Pence from the ticket would be received.

At the same time, Pence’s team is reportedly concerned about a push from Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner to replace him with a woman on the ticket. Trump has always been weak with women voters he lost them to Hillary Clinton by 13 percentage points and they are a major reason he has never had a positive approval rating.

Just a few weeks ago, Pence was publicly humiliated when former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley started a rumor about her possibly replacing Pence. Pence then had to reassure supporters by publicly addressing Haley’s comments.

“There are certain pockets out there that want to solve their problems by replacing the running mate,” a Pence adviser told Yahoo.

Trump Suggests Pence Would Not Be 2024 Running Mate If He Runs Again

WASHINGTON As former President Donald Trump teases a third bid for the White House, he is signaling that his old running mate won’t be joining the ticket this time around.

In an interview with The Washington Examiner on Tuesday, Trump said: “I dont think the people would accept” Pence as his running mate on a prospective 2024 ticket. Trump would first need to secure the Republican nomination, of course, before formally selecting a running mate.

“Mike and I had a great relationship except for the very important factor that took place at the end. We had a very good relationship,” Trump said. “I havent spoken to him in a long time.”

Trump is referring to Pence’s refusal to overturn the 2020 election after Trump urged him to do so. Pence has since said that he lacked the power to do so, but Trump has criticized that position, arguing that Pence could used the power of the vice presidency to block President Joe Biden’s election. The overwhelming majority of constitutional scholars have said Trump’s position is without merit.

Trump’s remarks come as Pence has increasingly distanced himself from the former president. As NBC News reported this week, Pence has broken with Trump more in the past five weeks than he had in the previous five years as he considers a 2024 presidential campaign of his own.

What To Watch For

Trump asks Mike Pence to be running mate in 2020

Polling shows Trump as a heavy favorite to win the GOP nomination again if he runs in 2024, though Pence over the past few months seems to have started laying his own groundwork for a potential 2024 presidential bid. That includes taking digs at his former boss, like when he said earlier this month there was no room in the Republican Party for apologists for Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an apparent rebuke of Trumps lavish praise for Putin last month, saying it was genius for Putin to recognize two pro-Kremlin breakaway states to justify invading Ukraine.

Former President Donald Trump has yet to announce whether hell run for president in 2024. But if he does, Trump said Mike Pence wont rejoin him on the GOP ticket.

Trump told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday night that I dont think the people would accept Pence as the former presidents running mate if he were to run for and win the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Pence spent his tenure in the Trump administration as one of the then-presidents most loyal and ardent defenders, refusing to break with Trump amid even the fiercest political firestorms. But the Trump-Pence relationship reached its breaking point in the run-up to and aftermath of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, when Trump demanded that Pence use his ceremonial authority presiding over the counting of electoral votes to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Pence refused to do so maintaining he had no such authority and worked with House and Senate parliamentarians to close off any procedural windows for Trump allies in Congress to carry out the then-presidents wishes.

Mike Pence Vs Kamala Harris

Harris, the Democratic Party’s vice president nominee described the Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as the “greatest failure of any presidential administration in the history” of America as she opened the vice debate with a sharp attack on Vice President Pence, who leads the president’s coronavirus task force.

The live debate at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City was a civil one between the two leaders, separated by plexiglass barriers, compared to last week’s showdown between President Trump and his Democratic challenger and former vice president Joe Biden, which degenerated into insults and name-calling.

During the 90-minute one-off debate before the November 3 presidential election, Harris, 55, and Pence, 61, stuck to their known campaign positions on major topics.

Pence Plans To Urge Republicans Against ‘relitigating The Past’ In Speech

But it was the remark over “fighting yesterday’s battles” that was the more direct assertion. Trump remains fixated on his 2020 election defeat, promoting debunked claims of a stolen election while suggesting that Pence could have prevented the ascertainment of Biden’s victory on Jan. 6, 2021.

Some of the pro-Trump rioters who stormed the Capitol that day, delaying the counting of Electoral College votes, were heard chanting “hang Mike Pence,” who was presiding over the count.

Last month, Pence rejected Trump’s claim that he could have “overturned” the 2020 results, saying: “The presidency belongs to the American people and the American people alone.”

“I heard this week that President Trump said I had the right to overturn the election. President Trump is wrong,” Pence said in a speech to the Federalist Society, a conservative legal organization, in Orlando, Florida..

Those remarks prompted Trump to say Pence considered himself “an automatic conveyor belt for the Old Crow Mitch McConnell to get Biden elected President as quickly as possible.”

Nikki Haley Ticks A Lot Of Boxes As A Strong 2024 Running Mate For Donald Trump

Trump affirms that Mike Pence will be 2020 running mate

Nikki Haley recently said at an appearance in Iowa that she would consider a presidential run, “if it looks like there’s a place for me next year,” adding “I’ve never lost a race. I’m not going to start now.” The equivocation is likely due to uncertainty over whether the party will line up behind Trump or decide it’s time for a change.

The former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. ticks a lot of the boxes that might be important to Trump in 2024. She has remained loyal to the former president but denounced the events of Jan. 6 strongly, which may help reassure conservative voters who have since turned away from Trump. Haley has the leadership qualities that would make her an appealing choice. As a 50-year-old woman and a child of Indian immigrants, Haley would certainly help diversify the ticket.

Former Vice President Mike Pences name should not be expected next to Donald Trumps during the 2024 presidential election, according to his former running mate, who said people wouldnt accept it.

I dont think the people would accept it, Trump told the Washington Examiner this week, pointing to the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Trump, who has long claimed massive fraud took place during the election, also repeatedly pushed his belief that Pence could have overturned the election results during the congressional certification last year.

Mike and I had a great relationship except for the very important factor that took place at the end. We had a very good relationship, the 45th president said, revealing that the two havent spoken in a long time.

Pence, too, has distanced himself from his former colleague in the past year over Trumps false claims.

Elections are about the future, Pence recently said. My fellow Republicans, we can only win if we are united around an optimistic vision for the future based on our highest values. We cannot win by fighting yesterdays battles, or by relitigating the past.

While Trump said he still likes Pence, he remained critical of the former vice presidents decision not to try to overturn the election results.

Trump Signals Pence Not Likely To Be His 2024 Running Mate If He Runs

Former President Trump appeared to suggest in an interview that former Vice President Mike Pence would not be his 2024 running mate if Trump opts to seek a second term again.

In an interview with the Washington Examiner on Tuesday, Trump said of Pence running alongside him: I dont think the people would accept it.

Trump said that he was disappointed in Mike after Pence refused to contest the 2020 presidential election results during Congresss official count of Electoral College votes, which Trump pressured him to do.

Mike thought he was going to be a human conveyor belt, that no matter how fraudulent the votes, you have to send them up to the Old Crow, the former president told the Examiner, using a nickname he has for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell

But that turned out to be wrong. Because now, as you know, they are feverishly working to try and get it so that the vice president cannot do what Mike said he couldnt do, Trump said.

Trump appeared to be referring to attempts by lawmakers on Capitol Hill to reform an 1887 election law that details how Electoral College votes are counted by Congress. The vice president oversees that count, which has historically been considered a ceremonious formality.

Lawmakers cite the mob of pro-Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 to stop the count as a reason to reform the law to make it clear that the vice president cannot change certified Electoral College results.
