Trumps Attempts To Overturn The Election Are Unparalleled In American History
President Trumps attempts to overturn the 2020 election are unprecedented in American history and an even more audacious use of brute political force to gain the White House than when Congress gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency during Reconstruction.
Mr. Trumps chances of succeeding are somewhere between remote and impossible, and a sign of his desperation after President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. won by nearly six million popular votes and counting, as well as a clear Electoral College margin. Yet the fact that Mr. Trump is even trying has set off widespread alarms, not least in Mr. Bidens camp.
Im confident he knows he hasnt won, Mr. Biden said at a news conference in Wilmington, Del., on Thursday, before adding, Its just outrageous what hes doing. Although Mr. Biden dismissed Mr. Trumps behavior as embarrassing, he acknowledged that incredibly damaging messages are being sent to the rest of the world about how democracy functions.
Mr. Trump has only weeks to make his last-ditch effort work: Most of the states he needs to strip Mr. Biden of votes are scheduled to certify their electors by the beginning of next week. The electors cast their ballots on Dec. 14, and Congress opens them in a joint session on Jan. 6.
Even if Mr. Trump somehow pulled it off, there are other safeguards in place to face the challenge, assuming people in power do not simply bend to the presidents will.
Trump Needs Catholic Swing Voters To Win So Heres How Thats Going
The black vote. The college-educated white vote. The Hispanic vote. Polls show Donald Trump trailing badly in all these groups. But the biggest shift has been among Catholics.
A recent poll from the Public Opinion Research Institute showed Trump down 23 points among Catholics compared to Hillary Clinton. A Washington Post-ABC News Poll put the margin slightly wider, giving Clinton a 27-point lead.
This breakout lead for the Democratic candidate marks a switch from the 2012 election. According to the Washington Post-ABC News Poll, there has been a 25-point shift in Catholics who voted for Romney last presidential election versus those who intend to vote for Trump this year. This ties for the biggest change in any demographic group.

Catholics comprise about 25 percent of voters in the United Statesrivaling other voting blocs such as non-white voters and independents . They have long been a swing vote in presidential elections, going for the Republican candidate in five of the last eleven contests. While Romney lost the Catholic vote in 2012, he lost it by a small margin50 percent to 48 percent.
Why the massive shift?
The large percentage of Catholics who are also Hispanic may be a factor. Hispanics historically tend to vote Democratic. However, the shift is seen with white Catholics as well.
Can Trump reverse the tide? hold out hope, arguing that Trump needs to bolster his rhetoric on protecting life, religious liberty and the treatment of immigrants.

The courts arent the only mechanism Republicans might use to keep Trump in power. The Constitution gives state legislators free rein to decide how to select electors. Currently, most states legally require electors to vote the same way as the people. But in a state with complete Republican control over the government, the legislature and governor could, in theory, pass a bill that strips this power away from citizens between the election and the actual casting of electoral votes. If this sounds far-fetched, recall that GOP governments in North Carolina, Michigan, and Wisconsin have all recently pulled lame-duck attempts to limit the power of incoming Democratic governors, with varying degrees of success.
To imagine how this would play out, consider Florida, where the GOP controls the governorship and both houses of the state legislature. If the Democratic presidential nominee narrowly won the state in 2020, Trump might cry fraud and demand an investigationas he did in the aftermath of the states 2018 Senate race, when it wasnt yet clear that Republican Rick Scott had won. The legislature could establish an investigatory commission stacked with partisans and designed to sow doubt about the outcome. Perhaps Kris Kobach, vice chair of Trumps erstwhile Commission on Election Integrity , would lead it.

US election 2020 culminates today, concluding an unusual year with familiar in-person voting. Millions of people have already turned out to cast their ballots by post, but the last leg will require people to gather amid a rampant pandemic. Political pundits expect massive turnout here as well, bolstering forecasts of a landslide victory for Joe Biden.

President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. promised transgender and gender-nonconforming people in the United States and around the world that he would fight for their dignity and safety, signaling a stark shift in policy between the incoming administration and the Trump White House, which has worked to weaken protections.
From the moment I am sworn in as president of the United States, know that my administration will see you, listen to you, and fight for not only your safety but also the dignity and justice you have been denied, Mr. Biden said in a statement recognizing Transgender Day of Remembrance on Friday. Advocacy groups have called on Mr. Biden to name members of the L.B.G.T.Q. community to his administration, including to his cabinet.
Violence against transgender people has long been a problem one that disproportionately affects Black transgender women and this year at least 37 transgender and gender-nonconforming people have been killed in the United States, more than the Human Rights Campaign has recorded in any other year.
Glaad, an advocacy group, said Mr. Biden was the first presidential candidate to acknowledge the epidemic of violence against trans people in an election-year debate or town hall.
Mr. Biden has said he will work to restore Obama-era protections that President Trump reversed when he took office, including protections for transgender patients against discrimination in health care settings, at homeless shelters and in federal prisons.

In modern times, one-term presidents have worried more about rehabilitating their legacies by taking on nonpartisan causes Democrat Jimmy Carter by building housing for the poor and George H.W. Bush by raising money for disaster aid, for example than about trying to shape national elections. But Trump retains a hold on the Republican electorate that is hard to overstate, and he has no intention of relinquishing it.
“There’s a reason why they’re called ‘Trump voters,'” Miller said. “They either don’t normally vote or don’t normally vote for Republicans.”
Trump lost the popular vote by more than 7 million last year and the Electoral College by the same 306-232 result by which he had won four years earlier but he got more votes than any other Republican nominee in history. And it would have taken fewer than 44,000 votes, spread across swing states Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin, to reverse the outcome.
Republicans, including Trump allies, say it’s too early to know what he will do, or what the political landscape will look like, in four years. A busload of Republican hopefuls are taking similar strides to position themselves. They include former Vice President Mike Pence, who is speaking to New Hampshire Republicans on Thursday, an event that the Concord Monitor called the kickoff of the 2024 race.

Which States Will Decide This Election
As Mrs Clinton discovered in 2016, the number of votes you win is less important than where you win them.
Most states nearly always vote the same way, meaning that in reality there are just a handful of states where both candidates stand a chance of winning. These are the places where the election will be won and lost and are known as battleground states.
In the electoral college system the US uses to elect its president, each state is given a number of votes based on how many members it sends to Congress – House and Senate. A total of 538 electoral college votes are up for grabs, so a candidate needs to hit 270 to win.
As the map above shows, some battleground states have a lot more electoral college votes on offer than others so candidates often spend a lot more time campaigning in them.
There Is Precedent For Trying A Former Government Official Established 145 Years Ago
Assuming Trump is not convicted on his impeachment charge of inciting an insurrection before the Jan. 6 invasion of the Capitol, he will not face a ban on future campaigns.
Some believe Trump might still be kept out of federal office by an invocation of the 14th Amendment. That part of the Constitution, added after the Civil War with former Confederate officers in mind, banned any who had “engaged in insurrection” against the government.
But that wording could well be read to require action against the government, not just incitement of others to action by incendiary speech. It could also require lengthy litigation in federal courts and a balancing of the 14th Amendment with the free speech protections of the First Amendment.
All that can be said at this point is that the former president will settle into a post-presidential routine far from his previous homes in Washington and New York City. And the greatest obstacle to his return to power would seem to be the pattern of history regarding the post-presidential careers of his predecessors.
