Election Deniers Who Say Trump Won In 2020 Are Running To Be Top Cop In 4 Battleground States
In four crucial battleground states, Republican candidates who falsely contend that Donald Trump won the 2020 election are running for state attorney general.
If they win, theyd serve as their states’ top law enforcement officers and would have the power to use their office to tilt the outcome of presidential elections. If Trump should run again in 2024, and the outcome is close in a handful of states, the actions attorneys general are able to take could also give Trump cover to claim falsely claim victory once again.
To the extent that election results are challenged, or that there are attempts to undermine results, it will be the state attorneys general representing the state and the results in court that perhaps matters most to protecting the will of the voters, said Joanna Lydgate, the CEO of States United Action, a nonpartisan group that tracks the races.
Along with the governor and, in most states, the secretary of state, the state attorney general is part of a trio of elected officials who oversee, administer, defend and certify elections and election results. Election deniers are also running in many states for secretary of state and governor.
It really matters that your attorney general is committed to defending the vote, no matter what the outcome is, Lydgate said.

Republican Sarah Palin, Republican Nick Begich III and Democrat Mary Peltola will advance to the November election in Alaska’s race for the state’s lone House seat, CNN projects. The fall election will decide who will win the seat for the next full term.
A fourth candidate is yet to be determined. Under Alaskas nonpartisan primary system, the top four finishers, regardless of party, advance to the general election.
The three candidates are also running in a special election to fill the remainder of the House seat, which has been vacant since Rep. Don Young’s death in March.
Palin, the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee, was backed by former President Donald Trump earlier this year. Begich won the Alaska Republican Party’s endorsement in April and is the product of a powerful Alaska political family. Peltola is a former Democratic state representative.

Alaskas special election to fill the late Rep. Don Youngs House seat wont be decided anytime soon: ballots will continue arriving and being counted for more than a week, and the state wont tabulate its ranked-choice results until Aug. 31.
But the biggest surprise in the early results in Wednesdays early morning hours was the strong showing by Democratic former state lawmaker Mary Peltola, who is competing against two Republicans, former Gov. Sarah Palin and businessman Nick Begich III.
CNN projected earlier tonight that no candidate will reach a majority of first choice votes and that the race will therefore head to ranked choice voting tabulation.
Peltolas chances in the special election got a major boost when Al Gross, an independent who was one of the four candidates to advance to the runoff, dropped out of the race. Alaska elections officials did not replace him on the ballot, which meant Democratic votes would be funneled almost entirely to Peltola, while two Republicans battled each other.
Peltola, a salmon advocate from the western Alaska bush a region not connected by road with the rest of the state is seeking to become the first Alaska Native elected to Congress.
I just think its high time that an Alaska Native be part of our congressional delegation, she told CNN in a June interview.

Voters in Alaska on Tuesday voted in two separate elections for the same US House seat the state’s at-large congressional district seat.
That’s because there’s both a special general election to fill the remainder of the late Rep. Don Young’s term and a primary election to decide who will compete in November for the seat’s next full term starting in January.
It’s a complicated process. Beyond voting for the same seat twice in one day, different rules apply to the special general and primary elections.
What will happen in the special general election? The special general election will be the first time that Alaska will use ranked choice voting which will see voters rank their preferred candidates, with the votes for the lowest-finishing candidates coming into play if no one tops 50% to determine who will fill the remainder of Young’s term. If no one reaches that threshold, it’ll be a while until we know the winner, with the ranked choice voting tabulation scheduled to begin on Aug. 31.
What will happen in the primary? The primary will use a top-four system, which means that candidates of all parties, and those with no party affiliation, run on the same primary ballot just as candidates did for the special election’s primary earlier this year. The top four performing candidates will then advance to the November general election for the full term.

He also refused to open the door for them initially, but was eventually served regardless. Telling agents of the court to leave is generally not an effective way of avoiding being served with official court-ordered documents.

Fewer Now Say Elections Across The Country Will Be Run And Administered Well Than In 2018
Voters largely think that elections in their area will be run well this year. Fully nine-in-ten registered voters say that elections in their communities will be run and administered very or somewhat well, little different than the share saying this in the weeks before the 2018 midterm election.
But a narrower majority of voters 62% say that elections across the country will be run and administered very or somewhat well this year 19 percentage points lower than the share saying this before the 2018 midterms .
In 2018, nearly nine-in-ten voters who supported or leaned toward a Republican candidate for the House of Representatives said that elections in the U.S. would be run and administered very or somewhat well. Today, 50% of voters who support or lean toward Donald Trump say this, and just 9% say elections in the U.S. will be administered very well.
In contrast, 72% of Biden supporters now say elections around the country will be run and administered at least somewhat well, only modestly lower than the 79% of Democratic voters in 2018 who said this.

Election And Capitol Riot
The Justice Department is investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection and efforts to overturn the election he falsely claimed was stolen, though whether the former president is a direct target of the probe remains unclear.
A federal grand jury recently subpoenaed the White House counsel under Trump, Pat Cipollone and Cipollone’s top deputy, suggesting that prosecutors regard close advisers to Trump as potentially vital witnesses.
Federal prosecutors have been especially focused on a scheme by Trump allies to elevate fake presidential electors in key battleground states won by Joe Biden as a way to subvert the vote, issuing subpoenas in recent weeks to multiple state Republican party chairmen.
The Justice Department investigation is running parallel to a probe by a US House committee which has held several public hearings, including in prime time, about efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn his 2020 election loss.
That House committee doesnt have the power to file criminal charges, but legal experts have said the testimony gives prosecutors territory to explore, including the assertion that Trump sought to join his supporters in marching to the Capitol on January 6 after holding a rally or that he dismissed warnings that people in the crowd weapons.
Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

WASHINGTON Tuesdays primary election in Wyoming could effectively end the career of Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, who is the vice chair of a U.S. House committee seeking to expose the truth behind former President Donald Trumps relentless efforts to stay in power after losing the 2020 election.
Cheneys determination to prevent Trump from ever again serving in the White House has left her fighting to hold on to the House seat she has held for three terms. Trump has made Cheneys ouster a top priority, endorsing a challenger and traveling to Wyoming to try to seal the deal.
Cheneys work as vice chair of the Jan. 6 committee has won her bipartisan praise from those who see Trump as a threat to American democracy. But it has severely threatened her chances of prevailing in the Republican primary in deeply red Wyoming, where Trump notched one of his most lopsided 2020 victories, capturing 70 percent of the vote compared to Joe Bidens 27 percent.
Set to deny Cheney a fourth term as Wyomings lone member of the House is Harriet Hageman, a Cheyenne ranching industry attorney who was little known outside the state before winning Trumps endorsement last year.
That has fueled speculation that Cheney is hoping for something bigger, and shes refused to rule out a 2024 presidential run.
Mike Pence Went To Lengths To Distance Himself From His Former Boss
Just hours earlier, former US vice-president Mike Pence delivered his own address nearby, and used his time to distance himself from Mr Trump.
While Mr Trump remained consumed by the election he falsely claims was stolen from him, Mr Pence urged conservatives to stop looking backwards and focus on the future.
“Some people may choose to focus on the past, but elections are about the future,” Mr Pence said to a conservative student group, the Young America’s Foundation.
“I believe conservatives must focus on the future to win back America. We can’t afford to take our eyes off the road in front of us because what’s at stake is the very survival of our way of life.”
“In order to win, conservatives need to do more than criticise and complain. We must unite our movement behind a bold, optimistic agenda,” he said.
In his speech, he repeatedly touted the “Trump-Pence administration”.
But the first question he received during a brief question-and-answer session was about his growing split with Mr Trump, which is particularly stark given the years he spent as the former president’s most loyal sidekick.
Mr Pence denied the two “differ on issues”, but acknowledged, “we may differ on focus”.

In pivotal battleground states across the U.S., intensely partisan candidates who falsely claim that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election are running for secretary of state.
As contenders to become the top election official in their respective states, these candidates, if they win, would in almost all cases oversee their state office administering the 2024 presidential election in which Trump might be the Republican candidate. Some experts say that scenario could contribute to an even more robust effort to overturn the next presidential election.

At least 23 people who deny the results of the 2020 election are running for secretary of state in 19 states across the U.S., according to the group a number that has alarmed voting and elections experts. Four of those states Arizona, Georgia, Michigan and Nevada are ones in which Biden scored his narrowest victories in 2020.
Lydgate and others have urged voters to pay attention to who is running in these traditionally sleepy, down-ballot races and to what they said.
