Committee Details Pressure Campaign To Elevate Trump Ally In Doj

The committee is rolling out extensive evidence of how Trump allies pressured the Justice Department to elevate Jeffrey Clark, a mid-level official attempting to get the DOJ to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the election results.

They showed December text messages from US representative Scott Perry, who texted Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows that we gotta get going with plans about challenging the election and elevating Mr Clark to a high level position.

I got it. I think I understand, Mr Meadows replied.

Later that month, Mr Clark urged Richard Donoghue, the former acting deputy attorney general, to sign a letter criticising Georgias election results and proposing sending a slate of pro-Trump electors.

Mr Donoghue said he thought the letter was extreme and highly innappropriate, given the lack of evidence about election irregularities in the state.

This is a grave step for the Department to take and could have tremendous constitutional, political and social ramifications for the country, Mr Donoghues response read.

This was not based on fact, the former DOJ official added during his testimony on Thursday. It was actually contrary to the facts.

It may very well have spiralled us into a constitutional crisis, he added.

In the days just before January 6, Donald Trump met with top Justice Department officials in the Oval Office.

He told the assembled leaders he was considering clearing house among the top leadership, who didnt go along with the former presidents election conspiracies, and elevating Jeffrey Clark, a mid-level DOJ official who did.

What do I have to lose? Mr Trump wondered aloud, according to testimony from Richard Donoghue, former acting deputy attorney general.

Former White House counsel Pat Cipollone compared elevating Mr Clark, who wanted states that went for Biden to submit illegitimiate pro-Trump electors instead, to a murder-suicide pact.

WASHINGTON On Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, barely 24 hours after President Donald J. Trump claimed in the middle of the night that frankly, we did win this election, Jared Kushner woke up in his Kalorama mansion and announced to his wife that it was time to leave Washington. Were moving to Miami, he said.

The election had not even been called for Joseph R. Biden Jr., but as Mr. Kushner later told the story to aides and associates, the White Houses young power couple felt no need to wait for the official results. They saw which way the votes were going and understood that, barring some unforeseen surprise, the president had lost his bid for a second term. Even if he refused to accept it himself.

No matter how vociferously Mr. Trump claimed otherwise, neither Mr. Kushner nor Ivanka Trump believed then or later that the election had been stolen, according to people close to them. While the president spent the hours and days after the polls closed complaining about imagined fraud in battleground states and plotting a strategy to hold on to power, his daughter and son-in-law were already washing their hands of the Trump presidency.

Pence’s Reaction Takes Center Stage At Third Hearing

Select committee aides told reporters on Wednesday afternoon that the latest hearing will delve into one of Trump’s theories rejected by most top legal minds and ultimately by Pence himself that the vice president could unilaterally refuse to count Electoral College votes from disputed states.

Pence on Jan. 6, 2021, was tasked with presiding over a joint session of Congress to confirm the Electoral College results. He stoked Trump’s fury when he said in a letter just before the proceedings that he cannot claim “unilateral authority” to throw out electoral votes.

The nine-member committee will plans to show how Trump heaped pressure on Pence to follow this theory, and how that helped stoke the Capitol riot and “put Pence’s life in danger,” an aide said. The panel is also expected to unveil new material documenting Pence’s moves at the Capitol as the insurrection was unfolding.

Republicans Talk Trash About Trump As Endorsements Flop

Republicans are more willing to challenge former President Donald Trump now that his endorsements are flopping in GOP primaries around the country.

There have been some successes, with J.D. Vance in Ohio and Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania, but the intra-party conflicts sparked by Trump’s endorsements of unpopular loyalists has made GOP heavyweights more willing to challenge the twice-impeached former president, reported Politico.

It shows that while people realize Donald Trump is virtually, in every way, still the leader of the Republican Party, people are willing to stick their necks out and support good candidates opposite of Trump when they see them, said Missouri-based GOP strategist Gregg Keller.

Former president George W. Bush, former vice president Mike Pence and former New Jersey governor Chris Christie all campaigned for Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, whose Trump-endorsed opponent flopped, and Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Rand Paul campaigned for Rep. Mo Brooks in his Alabama Senate primary, after the former president withdrew his endorsement.
