Or that he also insisted 40,000 Nigerians would not go back to their huts after seeing the U.S. In January 2018, the president grossly requested that more Norwegians immigrate and fewer Haitians and Africans immigrate.

Rational Trump Voter : High Earners
According to the Tax Policy Center, those who are in the top 20% of the income bracket benefitted from a 3% gain in income under the Trump administration. The average high-income household enjoyed a windfall of about $10,000.
The 2017 law was also full of loopholes that allowed high earners and the wealthy to keep more of their income. One particular deduction reduced the top tax rate on income from business for high-income earners by 10%. The deduction also included income from real estate for real estate owners. The top 1% of earners benefitted from these sorts of loopholes the most, gaining two-thirds of the windfall.
Nyc Subway Assault Tweet
On August 30, 2020, Trump retweeted a video showing white woman being shoved into a subway by a black man. The video was labeled “Black Lives Matter/Antifa” but in reality the video depicted a mentally ill individual with no connection to either group. The video was originally posted on social media by a white nationalist.

Trumps racial incitement has already inspired hate crimes. Two brothers arrested in Boston last summer for beating up a homeless Latino man cited Trumps anti-immigrant message when explaining why they did it.
Donald Trump was right all these illegals need to be deported, one of the men reportedly told police officers.
Trump did not even bother to distance himself from them. Instead, he suggested that the men were well-intentioned and had simply gotten carried away.
I will say that people who are following me are very passionate, Trump said. They love this country and they want this country to be great again. They are passionate.
Trumps Bigotry Was A Key Part Of His Campaign
Regardless of how one labels it, Trumps racism or bigotry was a big part of his campaign by giving a candidate to the many white Americans who harbor racial resentment.
One paper, published in January 2017 by political scientists Brian Schaffner, Matthew MacWilliams, and Tatishe Nteta, found that voters measures of sexism and racism correlated much more closely with support for Trump than economic dissatisfaction, after controlling for factors like partisanship and political ideology.
Another study, conducted by researchers Brenda Major, Alison Blodorn, and Gregory Major Blascovich shortly before the 2016 election, found that if people who strongly identified as white were told that nonwhite groups will outnumber white people in 2042, they became more likely to support Trump.
And a study, published in November 2017 by researchers Matthew Luttig, Christopher Federico, and Howard Lavine, found that Trump supporters were much more likely to change their views on housing policy based on race. In this study, respondents were randomly assigned a subtle image of either a black or a white man. Then they were asked about views on housing policy.
In contrast, favorability toward Hillary Clinton did not significantly change respondents views on any of these issues when primed with racial cues.

Trump’s Lasting Influence On The Us Immigration System
I think it’s important, once the Trump presidency is over, that we actually look at the question you’re asking: How much does the rhetoric match the policy? I think there’s some areas you’ll see the match is pretty clean. For example, in terms of the rhetoric of anti-immigration, he’s taking a lot of steps since the refugee ban that follow through on exactly what he wanted to do.
And then there are ways in which the rhetoric is what matters. Presidential rhetoric is so important. It’s not a disconnect from the real record. What a president says is often one of the things that has the biggest impact on our country. And I think that Twitter feed is something that we’re going to be looking at in the presidential archives. The kinds of words he legitimated and normalized will be part of the record. And then there’s other areas where it’s fair to ask historians once we have that record to see. Are there areas of disconnect between some of the things he said, which were mostly reactionary, and what he actually did in terms of policy? I don’t know what those would be yet. But I think that’s something we should ask of any president.

In 1989, Trump took out full-page ads in four New York City-area newspapers calling for the return of the death penalty in New York and the expansion of police authority in response to the infamous case of a woman who was beaten and raped while jogging in Manhattans Central Park.
They should be forced to suffer and, when they kill, they should be executed for their crimes, Trump wrote, referring to the Central Park attackers and other violent criminals. I want to hate these murderers and I always will.
The public outrage over the Central Park jogger rape, at a time when the city was struggling with high crime, led to the wrongful conviction of five teenagers of color known as the Central Park Five.
The mens convictions were overturned in 2002, after theyd already spent years in prison, when DNA evidence showed they did not commit the crime. Today, their case is considered a cautionary tale about a politicized criminal justice process.
Trump, however, still thinks the men are guilty.
When The Looting Starts The Shooting Starts
In May 2020, Trump was accused of racism for tweeting “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” and stating of the looters “these thugs are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd” in response to a third night of arson and rioting in Minneapolis, during which the Minneapolis Third Precinct police station was set on fire by rioters, over the police killing of the unarmed black man. The phrase had been used previously in 1967 by a Miami police chief, Walter E. Headley, that was widely condemned by civil rights groups and repeated in 1968 during the presidential campaign of segregationist George Wallace.
As protests continued, Washington, D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser criticised Trump for stating that protesters who climbed over the White House fence would be met by “the most vicious dogs and ominous of weapons”, saying it was “no subtle reminder to African-Americans of segregationists that let dogs out on women, children and innocent people in the South”.

It may be that many minority voters simply do not view some of his controversial comments and policies as racist. Too often, scholars try to test whether something is racist by looking exclusively at whether the rhetoric or proposals they disagree with resonate with whites. They frequently dont even bother to test whether they might appeal to minorities, as well.
Yet when they do, the results tend to be surprising. For instance, one recent study presented white, Black and Hispanic voters with messages the researchers considered to be racial dog whistles, or coded language that signals commitment to white supremacy. It turned out that the messages resonated just as strongly with Blacks as they did with whites. Hispanics responded even more warmly to the rhetoric about crime and immigration than other racial groups.

Trumps retaliation against the parents of a Muslim U.S. Army officer who died while serving in the Iraq War was a clear low point in a campaign full of hateful rhetoric.
Khizr Khan, the father of the late Army Captain Humayun Khan, spoke out against Trumps bigoted rhetoric and disregard for civil liberties at the Democratic National Convention on July 28. It quickly became the most memorable moment of the convention.
Let me ask you, have you even read the U.S. Constitution? Khan asked Trump before pulling a copy of the document from his jacket pocket and holding it up. I will gladly lend you my copy, he declared.
Khans wife Ghazala Khan, who wears a Muslim head scarf, stood at his side during the speech but did not speak.
In response to the devastating speech, Trump seized on Ghazala Khans silence to insinuate that she was forbidden from speaking due to the couples Islamic faith.
If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasnt allowed to have anything to say. You tell me, Trump said in an interview with ABC News that first appeared on July 30.
Ghazala Khan explained in an op-ed in the Washington Post the following day that she could not speak because of grief over her son.
Walking onto the convention stage, with a huge picture of my son behind me, I could hardly control myself. What mother could? she wrote. Donald Trump has children whom he loves. Does he really need to wonder why I did not speak?

So lots of presidents have used words that are not nice or openly racist in private, and lots of presidents have not been nice people. Johnson is an example of someone who could be pretty rough and ruthless, even with people who worked for him and supported him. Bill Clinton famously had a temper that could come out at any moment, and people didn’t like really being in the crossfire. But that’s different from what people are talking about with President Trump. In his case, it’s his use of all that language in 2020 rather than 1964, right out in the public on his Twitter feed, in a presidential debate or at his rallies. It’s also about the way he treats people, people he fires within his administration, people who oppose him right out in the open.
There’s often a difference in how we think about presidents and how they actually behave. So does Trump’s reputation actually match his record, or are we maybe looking at this the wrong way?

Heres the question: Is Donald Trump a racist? Behind that question lies a still more important one: How should we define the term racism?
There are at least two main ways of defining this word. The most popular definition of racism is racial prejudice. By this definition, racism is a personal, moral failure.
Many social scientists study racism this way. Concepts like old-fashioned racism or racial resentment think of racism as rooted in the individual.
The other way is to see racism, specifically since the mid-20th century, as a system of discrimination. In this view, a person does not need to be full of hate to perpetuate racism.
In fact, according to the work of researchers such as Ian Hanley-López and Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, such personal considerations are irrelevant. Under this broader definition of racism, it is a means to an end. This definition is founded on the concept that race was socially constructed to divide, dehumanize and maintain power.
