Rosen: Trump Claims Of Election Fraud Debunked

Haberman: This is what struck me about Ivanka Trump’s texts

Jeffrey Rosen served as acting attorney general for the final month of the Trump administration, after former Attorney General Bill Barr resigned in part over presidents spurious claims of fraud.

Rosen told the committee Trump would ask about election fraud allegations hed seen on television or heard from people in Georgia or Pennsylvania that had already been debunked.

We were in a position to say people already looked at that and we know youre getting bad information. Thats not correct. Its been demonstrated to be not correct, Rosen said. In our point of view, it was debunked.

Trump Turns On Hannity Over Capitol

  • Trump turned on Fox News host Sean Hannity over his texts to Trump aides before the Capitol riot.

  • Hannity texted a White House aide saying Trump should stop talking about the election being rigged.

  • Trump said: I disagree with Sean on that statement and the facts are proving me right.

Donald Trump hit out at Fox News Sean Hannity on Wednesday for suggesting days after the Capitol riot that the former president should stop claiming the election was rigged.

The House select committee investigating the Capitol riot on Tuesday released the texts sent by Hannity a prominent supporter of Trump to his former aides including Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff.

They were part of a letter to Hannity requesting that he cooperate with the committees investigation.

The letter quoted a text sent by Hannity to Meadows and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan four days after the Capitol riot which said: cant mention the election again. Ever. I did not have a good call with him today. And worse, Im not sure what is left to do or say, and I dont like not knowing if its truly understood. Ideas?

Trump told CNN on Wednesday, through a spokesperson: I disagree with Sean on that statement and the facts are proving me right.

The spokesperson did not specify which facts they were referring to or how they were being proven right.

Letter To President Trump Regarding Family Separation

Recipient: President Donald Trump

Dear President Trump,

We, the undersigned national, state, and local organizations write to urge you to end the systematic and cruel separation of families apprehended at the U.S. border. Increased family separation at the border comes at a time when immigration enforcement has already torn apart families across the country, at places of worship, schools, and workplaces. Mothers and fathers who have lived in the U.S. for decades are being forced to decide whether they should leave their American children behind in the care of others for a secure and brighter future, or take them with them to a country now foreign to them. Children and young people are having to grow up fast as their mothers and fathers are forcibly taken away by Immigration and Customs Enforcement .

The American Academy of Pediatrics has condemned these policies, saying that highly stressful experiences, like family separation, can cause irreparable harm, disrupting a childs brain architecture and affecting his or her short- and long-term health. This type of prolonged exposure to serious stress known as toxic stress can carry lifelong consequences for children.

Tearing apart families does nothing to make us safer or stronger, and separating children from their parents betrays our deeply held American values.

We demand that you end these callous and cruel policies against immigrants and their families immediately.

Sincerely,

But Didn’t The Trump Campaign Say It Was In Compliance With The Tcpa And Fcc Guidelines

How to Make Your Own Donald Trump Executive Order Meme

Yes, and that’s accurate. But that’s largely because the legal guidelines around these kinds of P2P text messages aren’t clear.

The TCPA and FCC have rules about abuse on autodialer systems that can automatically send messages or make phone calls. But there isn’t any guidance on these systems because they’re run by humans.

The CTIA’s statement about requiring opt-out language and prior consent are part of recommended guidelines to the industry for players like the carriers and senders like political campaigns. But the trade group has no ability to enforce these guidelines, which are more like mutually agreed upon practices than firm laws.

An upcoming may offer some guidance on the legal definition of phone spam.

Its out of the blue: Your bank and other legitimate businesses generally wont use texts as their primary form of communication. If your bank texts you asking for some action on your part, check for an accompanying email and call the customer service number listed on the banks website to confirm.

It doesnt quite make sense. Trust your gut on this one. If the message is riddled with spelling and grammatical errors or seems out of line, its likely a scam.

It contains a funky URL. Spam texts often contain a link. Sometimes, that link appears to lead to a legitimate site, but on closer inspection, a critical word or letter is missing or misspelled. For example, amazon.com could become something like amzon.com. Strings of numbers and symbols in a link can also be a bad sign, Porter said.

Theyre mean. If you reply to a spam text or open a link, scammers may follow up by calling you. If you ever get a call from a so-called customer service representative who makes you feel embarrassed or stupid, hang up. Its a classic con-artist tactic to talk down to people until they bend to your suggestions, according to Kurt Baumgartner, principal security researcher at cybersecurity company Kaspersky. In the same vein, its usually a red flag if a customer service rep asks to remotely control your computer.

Keep in mind, though, that even if you guard your phone number with your life, scammers still punch in numbers randomly.

Are P2p Text Messages Legal

P2P texting is a gray area in the Federal Communications Commissions Telephone Consumer Protection Act , which was passed in 1991 to protect consumers from unwanted, nuisance emails, telephone calls and texts.

The FCC declined to comment on whether the practice is legal, citing a pending petition filed in May by the P2P Alliance, a coalition of texting providers seeking clarification on the rules.

Even though campaigns are sending tens of thousands of texts an hour, they say they are not violating federal rules about bulk texting because texts are being sent one at a time by a person.

Thats because the FCC law specifically mentions automated telephone dialing systems used to make calls, send text messages and recorded voice calls known as robocalls.

The rules apply to political campaigns, but not if they are sent individually, experts say.

If a message was sent manually, it may be a nuisance, but its not a violation of the law, even if its from a complete stranger, says David Carter, a partner the TCPA Defense Force, a Washington, D.C., law firm.

Giuliani: Trump Wanted Doj Officials Who Werent Frightened

Rep. Adam Kinzinger recited evidence of lawmakers meeting Trump at the White House Dec. 21, 2020, to discuss the election and then Rep. Scott Perry returning the next day to introduce Clark to Trump.

Trumps campaign lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, described in a videotaped deposition why the president sought to give former Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Clark election-related responsibilities.

Beyond the president, I do recall saying to people that somebody should be put in charge of the Justice Department who isnt frightened of whats going to be done to their reputation because the Justice Department was full of people like that, Giuliani said.

Jeffrey Rosen, the acting attorney general Trump sought to replace with Clark, said he wasnt worried about his reputation when rejecting baseless claims of election fraud.

No, not at all, Rosen said.

A lot of these systems are flagged automatically or occur when customer complaints come in, so thats a hard case to make. Theres no evidence that the carriers or their partners are flagging and blocking these messages for reasons other than preventing spam.

The telecom companies are also far more reserved when it comes to staking out a political position, with the carriers previously having praised Trump for his large corporate tax cut in 2017.

When it comes to combatting spam, the motivation is primarily driven by the need to eliminate something most people find annoying.

Pressuring Ukraine And Whistleblower Complaint

In September 2019, The Washington Post reported that Trump had ordered the withholding of nearly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine in mid-July, one week before a phone call in which he urged Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Hunter Biden, the son of 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden. This tied into reports of a whistleblower complaint from the intelligence community regarding communications between Trump and Ukraine, and the failure of the acting director of national intelligence, Joseph Maguire, to relay the complaint to Congress.

Trump admitted to discussing Joe and Hunter Biden with Zelensky, and even released a transcript of their conversation, though he denied that he withheld the military aid as a means for pressuring his counterpart into digging up dirt on a political rival. He later doubled down on his assertion that the Bidens needed to be investigated, calling for the Chinese government to do so.

Its Good To See Murdoch Publicly Push Trump To Drop Conspiracies About The 2020 Election Perhaps Those Who Work For Him Can Echo That Message

For more than a year now, weve heard some in conservative circles question the authenticity of the 2020 presidential election. In November 2020, Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump to become president. Thats a fact. But with Trump leading the way and many along for the ride the disproven Big Lie that the presidency was stolen and that our election system is rigged continues to erode the countrys trust in democracy. It already stained one of the hallmarks of our country: the peaceful transition of power.

Sure, its easy to dismiss the likes of a pillow guy and Rudy Giuliani as crackpots pushing goofball conspiracy theories about faulty voting machines and stuffed ballot boxes and dead people voting. But when legitimate news outlets question or amplify the baseless possibilities of unfair elections, the damage is incalculable.

Thats why its a tad frustrating to now hear Rupert Murdoch the executive chairman of News Corp. who oversees outlets such as Fox News, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post saying its time for Trump to let go of the past.

Its not that Murdoch is wrong. In fact, hes right. It just would have been nice if Murdoch made a big deal about this in November 2020 instead of November 2021.

Wait, wasnt it less than a month ago when The Wall Street Journals opinion section once again claiming the election was rigged?

And isnt Fox News being sued by Dominion Voting Systems for things said on the air?

The Twitterverse Of Donald Trump in 26,234 Tweets

After the Electoral College affirmed Bidens win on December 14, Trumps allies turned their attention to January 6: the congressional certification of the electors and the rally that Trump said on Twitter will be wild!

On December 21, Brooks, the Alabama congressman, wrote to Meadows and others in a group text asking whether he should engage with the media about the formulation of our January 6 strategies.

Does the White House want me to reply or be mum? Brooks wrote. A staunch Trump ally running for Senate this year, Brooks gave an incendiary speech on January 6 but recently fell out of favor with Trump after suggesting Republicans should move on from 2020.

In response to CNNs request for comment, Brooks said he had no regrets about his speech on January 6 and that he was shocked by the violence. I had no inkling, Brooks added.

Cruz, a Texas Republican who pushed a plan inside the Senate that would have delayed certification of the election, exchanged just a few messages with Meadows links to his statements posted to social media.

On January 2, the senator sent Meadows his tweet proposing a 10-day audit of the election results.

Heres the statement, Cruz wrote.

Perfect, Meadows responded.

Dems and some Republicans may well try to shortstop our objection efforts. Hoping the VP sticks with us, Babin wrote.

On January 5, Jordan, the Ohio congressman and close GOP ally of Meadows, weighed in.

On January 2 and 3, Pierson wrote to Meadows looking for help.

Cheney Addresses Americans Deceived By Trump

Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, the GOP vice chair of the committee investigating Jan. 6., ended the panels fifth hearing with a message for the millions of Americans who put their trust in former President Donald Trump.

Cheney said more than a dozen Republicans have contradicted Trumps version of events, testifying about what actually happened in the weeks before Jan. 6.

Some of the witnesses, including those who will testify at future hearings, worked for Trump on his campaign or in his administration. Others, she said, have been conservative Republicans for their entire careers.

It can be difficult to accept that President Trump abused your trust, that he deceived you, Cheney said. Many will invent excuses to ignore that fact. But that is a fact. I wish it werent true. But it is.

Hundreds And Hundreds Of Doj Resignations If Clark Appointed Donoghue Says

In a White House meeting, President Trump asked Acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue what he would do if he fired Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and appointed Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Clark.

Id resign immediately. Im not working for one minute with this guy, Donoghue said he told Trump. Steve Engel, an assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel, also told Trump he would resign.

But the two werent the only ones to threaten resignation. Already almost every assistant attorney general had committed to resigning within hours if Clark was appointed. Beyond them, Donoghue guessed that many US attorneys in districts across the country would have resigned, triggering a domino effect of resignations.

Mr. President, within 24, 48, 72 hours, you could have hundreds and hundreds of resignations of the leadership of your entire justice department because of your actions. Whats that going to say about you, Donoghue said he told Trump.

Committee Reveals Text Messages Between Former Trump Campaign Officials In Aftermath Of Attack

Christina Prignano Amanda Kaufman

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection has obtained thousands of text messages relating to top White House officials actions in the weeks leading up to when a mob stormed the Capitol in attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Many of those texts were obtained by news organizations as the committee interviewed witnesses and prepared for the explosive public hearings. Now, theyre being referenced as the committee methodically tries to make the case that former president Donald Trump is responsible for the violence at the Capitol that day.

Many key text messages the committee obtained were turned over by Mark Meadows, and cover the run-up to Jan. 6 and some of its aftermath. The committee on Tuesday also revealed new texts between former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale and former Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson. Here are some of the texts that were turned over to the committee:

Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, reportedly exchanged dozens of text messages with Meadows urging him to overturn the 2020 election in the weeks after the results, The Washington Post reported.

Thomas texted Meadows frequently, sometimes sending him videos and other materials as she tried to claim the election results were rife with fraud.
