Trump Is A Barometer For Republican Views Of Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court has been issuing rulings that tend to favor conservatives, but its approval ratings have dropped among Republicans as well as Democrats, according to an analysis by my Reuters colleagues and a recent Gallup poll, both released on July 28.
A year ago, 58% of Americans approved of the court, its highest rating in about 11 years, according to the poll. This year, the courts approval rating dipped to 49%, and a historical gap between Republicans and Democrats narrowed to nothing: Members of both parties have identical approval ratings of 51% .
The courts reputation has taken a hit among Republicans, despite it taking a sharp turn toward the right, both in terms of its membership and decisions.
Former President Donald Trump appointed three new justices since 2017, moving the court further to the right than it had been for decades. Republican approval of the court expectedly surged in Gallups polls after those appointments.
And, a recent Reuters analysis of the courts shadow docket rulings from the past 12 months found that the courts 6-3 conservative majority repeatedly favored religious groups and Trumps administration, while denying almost 100 other emergency applications by private individuals and groups.

Trump Gets His Best Rating Ever On Guns Its Still Bad
Trump has generally dragged his feet when it comes to gun control. You might expect that to hurt him, given that Americans are in favor of stricter gun laws. Indeed, his approval rating on gun policy in our latest poll is only 38%.
Yet that 38% is actually the highest its ever been. Its a statistically insignificantly higher than the 36% it was last month and 5 points higher than he was at the beginning of the year.
I find that notable because gun control and Trumps mostly inaction on it has been in the news a lot recently, after mass shootings in Texas and Ohio. Despite that, his approval rating on the issue isnt going down.
Moreover, gun policy is the only issue on which Trumps approval actually went up over the last month.
While I wouldnt put too much on this, I do think its notable. It suggests perhaps that gun control isnt the driver of public opinion perhaps some Democrats hope it is heading into 2020.

Perceptions Of Biden And Views Of Trumps Future
About four-in-ten Americans now approve of Joe Bidens job performance as president, while 60% disapprove. Bidens approval rating is relatively unchanged from earlier in the summer and remains far lower than it was in the early months of his presidency.
Demographic patterns in Bidens approval rating also are little different than in recent months, with White adults, those without bachelors degrees and younger adults more likely than others to disapprove of Biden.
Majorities across all age groups disapprove of Biden, though his rating is somewhat more positive among adults 65 and older than among those in younger age groups. At the same time, older adults are more likely than younger adults to express strongly negative views of Biden: While 63% of adults under 30 disapprove of Bidens performance, just 32% say they strongly disapprove. Among those 65 and older, a smaller overall share disapproves , but 46% strongly disapprove.

Facing heat from several quarters, US President Joe Biden’s popularity has dipped spectacularly. Now, his approval ratings have taken a tumble as well. Reportedly, Biden’s current approval ratings fare lower than what his infamous predecessor, Donald Trump, ever managed to achieve during his four tumultuous years in the office, where he was impeached twice.
The poll conducted by CNN shows that Biden’s approval rating stood at 38 per cent while 62 per cent disapproved of his presidentship. On the economic front, Biden has an approval rating of only 30 per cent. The figures become grim when one notes that Trump’s lowest economic approval rating was 41 per cent which came way back in 2018.
Moreover, ahead of the midterms, the swing states haven’t been kind to Biden either. His net approval ratings in Ohio , Arizona , Wisconsin and Pennsylvania paint a grim picture and suggest that the battle may be uphill.
Democrats starting to lose confidence
While the palpable public anger is understandable, it appears that Biden is also losing the confidence of his colleagues. Reportedly, the President’s approval rating for the handling of the economy has dwindled from 71 per cent, earlier this year to 62 per cent amongst the Democrats in the recent survey.
The Claim: President Joe Bidens Approval Rating Is 39% And Lower Than Donald Trumps Ever Was
After the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August, President Joe Biden’s approval ratings took a hit. But some online posts exaggerate the depth of the drop.
Text in reads, “Joe Biden’s approval falls to 39 percent, worse than Trump’s approval ever.” The post did not indicate which poll it’s referring to.
A similar post accumulated 46,000 likes in six days before it was deleted. Other claims in this vein have racked up hundreds of interactions on Facebook and Instagram, according to CrowdTangle, a social media insights tool.
The claim is misleading. While one poll did put Bidens approval rating at 39%, the polling average a more accurate measure of a president’s popularity put it higher. Experts say Biden’s approval rating, the lowest since he took office, is still higher than Trumps term low.
USA TODAY reached out to several social media users who shared the claim for comment.

According to this weeks poll, Mr Bidens net approval rating is a dismal minus nine points. Although this is better than Mr Trumps score of -15 at this point in his presidency, it is far below Mr Obamas plus six. And support for Mr Biden is deteriorating rapidly. His net approval rating has fallen by more than ten points since his 200th day in office, just over two months ago. Mr Obamas fell by only four, and Mr Trumps by just one, over the corresponding period .
It is hard to know exactly what accounts for the slump. Some pin the blame on the surge in covid-19 cases and deaths over the summer, fuelled by the highly contagious Delta variant. After all, voters elected Mr Biden in large part because he was seen as better equipped than Mr Trump to tackle the pandemic. Others think Democrats have become disaffected with the president because he has failed to pass key parts of his agenda, including a bipartisan infrastructure bill and a multi-trillion-dollar social-spending package, which would fund health care, education, climate change and other progressive priorities.
Bidens Weakest Job Approval Rating
- The latest survey found that 58% of voters disapprove of Bidens job performance and 39% approve. It marks the 46th presidents lowest approval rating and highest disapproval rating in 62 weekly surveys conducted since he took office in January 2021.
- For comparison, Bidens latest numbers are worse than Donald Trumps were at this time four years ago, when 45% approved and 52% disapproved of the former president. Bidens popularity, or lack thereof, mirrors Trumps standing in 2020, when the nation was grappling with the twin crises of the pandemic and the response to the murder of George Floyd.
- Republicans are far more strident in their disdain for Biden than Democrats are in their support: 80% of GOP voters strongly disapprove of Bidens job handling, compared with 37% of Democrats who strongly approve of it.

Bidens diminishing standing should be alarming to Democrats working to hold control of Congress in the midterm elections this fall. While Bidens decline has not yet dragged down approval for most Democratic incumbents on the Senate side of the aisle, studies have shown an increasing association between a partys House performance and their presidents job approval rating.
When it comes to this president, specifically, surveys at this point have found that an aversion to Biden doesnt necessarily mean a vote against the Democratic Party come November, though that likely provides little solace given the bleak nature of the political environment.

Bidens Approval Rating Just Dipped Under One Marker You Dont Want To Be Below
President Joe Bidens job approval rating in July is his lowest since taking office, with support among independent voters steadily dwindling, according to the latest PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll.
If independents serve as a weathervane for public opinion, Biden faces strong headwinds of dissent. In July 2021, nearly half of all independent registered voters said they approved of Bidens performance so far. Now, nearly half 46 percent say they strongly disapprove of Bidens presidency. Overall Biden support from independents has dropped by 20 percentage points, a trend that could weigh down Democratic candidates running for Congress this November.
In the new poll, about a third of U.S. adults 36 percent say they like how Biden is leading the nation. Another 57 percent said they disapprove of his performance his highest disapproval rating yet. Looking at race, income, geography, age or education, no group mustered majority approval of Biden as president.

Party affiliation offers the lone exception, with three-quarters of Democrats and people who said they voted for Biden in 2020 endorsing the president. But that support has slid substantially during Bidens time in office, down from 94 percent shortly after his inauguration.

Some Concerns About Functioning Of Us Democracy
Majorities in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Sweden and the Netherlands are skeptical of how the U.S. political system functions. On the flip side, majorities in South Korea, Greece, Italy, Japan, Taiwan and Spain express at least some confidence in the American system of government.
However, even among publics where majorities think the U.S. political system works at least somewhat well, this confidence is lukewarm: At most, about a fifth say the American political system functions very well. In most places surveyed, the share who say this is smaller than one-in-ten.
While attitudes are mixed about how well the U.S. political system functions, publics in the advanced economies surveyed are largely skeptical that democracy in the U.S. is a good example for other countries to follow. Across all publics surveyed, no more than about three-in-ten say the U.S. is currently setting a good example of democratic values.
Rather, majorities or pluralities say American democracy used to be a good example but has not been in recent years, and up to about a quarter reject the idea that the U.S. has ever been a good model of democracy.

Bidens impact on the midterm ballot
- Morning Consults generic ballot test in June 2018, at a similar place in the midterm cycle, found no such discrepancy: Voters who disapproved of Trump were just as likely to say theyd vote for the Democratic candidate as voters who approved of him were to back a Republican.
- The GOP has made gains on the generic ballot since Morning Consult began tracking the question this cycle, with congressional Republicans now tied with Democrats, compared with a deficit of 4 percentage points in September.
The latest Morning Consult/Politico survey was conducted June 4-5, 2022, among a representative sample of 2,006 registered U.S. voters, with an unweighted margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

The American publics views of former President Donald J. Trump have remained remarkably stable across a number of different measures in recent months, even as he faces multiple investigations and as he remains a central figure in the midterm elections, according to the most recent New York Times/Siena College poll.
Voters held nearly identical views from those earlier in the summer on whether they had a favorable view of Mr. Trump, whether they thought he had committed serious federal crimes, and whom they would support in a hypothetical 2024 Trump-Biden matchup.
Overall, 44 percent of voters viewed Mr. Trump favorably, and 53 percent viewed him unfavorably . The recent poll was fielded early this month, after news of the Justice Departments inquiry into Mr. Trumps handling of confidential documents but before the New York attorney general announced she was suing Mr. Trump and his family business.

Donald Trumps Approval Rating Reaches Highest Point Since 2017 As Administration Battles Coronavirus New Poll Shows
President Donald Trumps approval rating reached its highest point in three years Tuesday as his administration continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new poll.
The CNN poll conducted by SSRS, an independent research company, found that 45 percent of respondents approve of the way Trump is handling his job, while 51 percent disapprove and 4 percent had no opinion. The poll surveyed 1,112 people and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percent.
Trumps approval rating has hit 45 percent only one other time during his presidency, and that was less than two months after he took office in 2017. That poll showed the president had a 45 percent approval rating, with 52 percent disapproving, on March 5, 2017.
The new CNN poll showed that 42 percent of people believe the federal government is doing a good job at preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus in the United States. That rating is down from a CNN poll result in early March, in which 49 percent said the federal government was doing a good job in combating the pandemic while 43 percent said it was doing a poor job.
The U.S. now has over 1.35 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with 81,650 deaths reported, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. So far, 232,733 people have recovered from the viruss disease, COVID-19.
Biden More Trusted Than Putin And Xi Less Trusted Than Merkel
Publics express much more confidence in Biden than in Russian President Vladimir Putin or Chinese President Xi Jinping. Biden also fares well in comparison with French President Emmanuel Macron, but his ratings tend to trail those of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
A median of 77% have confidence in Merkel to do the right thing in world affairs. She receives somewhat higher ratings in the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Belgium, France, New Zealand and Australia than in her home country, though a large majority of Germans still express confidence in the chancellor. Of the 16 publics surveyed, Greece is the only one where fewer than half hold this view. Faith in Merkel has also increased since the summer of 2020 in six of the 12 countries where data is available for both years.
A median of 63% have confidence in Macron when it comes to his handling of world affairs. Roughly eight-in-ten or more hold this view in Greece and Sweden. As with Merkel, Macrons ratings in his home country are positive, but more subdued than in other publics 53% of people in France trust the French president to do what is right in international affairs.
Medians of only around one-in-five express confidence in Putin or Xi. Singapore and Greece are the only countries where more than half trust either president 55% in both Greece and Singapore say they have confidence in Putin, and 70% in Singapore say the same of Xi.

Trumps Popularity Falls Among Republicans According To New Poll

Donald Trumps popularity among registered Republicans has fallen in the 100 days since the end of his presidency, according to a recent poll.
The NBC News poll found that Republican support for the party was greater than the support for the former president, who was favoured by 44 per cent of Republicans.
The figure for registered Republicans in favour of the party over the former president, in comparison, was at 50 per cent.
It was the first time in almost two years that support for the Republican party was greater than that for Mr Trump, NBC News reported, and the first time support for the GOP reached 50 per cent against the former president.
Among all respondents to the poll, Mr Trump was favourable for 32 per cent, and unfavourable for 55 per cent a slight worsening of Januarys figures, when the former president was 40 per cent favourable and 53 percent unfavourable among all registered voters.
When compared to the poll for November, Mr Trump was also 9 per cent less favourable and 2 per cent more unfavourable among all respondents to the NBC News poll.
The findings follow reports of Mr Trumps continued control over the Republican party from his Mar-a-Lago resort in southern Florida even after election defeat, the end of his single-term in office and his alleged support for the 6 January insurrection on the US Capitol.
Among all adults, as few as 21 per cent said so.
