And Congressman Ted Lieu, a California Democrat, is introducing legislation that would require the White House to have a psychiatrist on staff. How Donald Trump Gets It Wrong On Mental Illness Every Time

Senior Wellness & Travel Editor, HuffPost

When it comes to mental health disorders, presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has everything backwards.

His rhetoric isnt just stigmatizing, its also factually incorrect. In one primary debate, Trump perpetuated the myth that those who are mentally ill are more likely to act violently.

I feel that the gun-free zones and, you know, when you say that, thats target practice for the sickos and for the mentally ill, he said at the time. They look around for gun-free zones.

And after two Virginia journalists were killed last August, Trump was quick to blame mental illness — not a lack of gun laws — for the tragedy. He told CNN that it shouldn’t be difficult for sane people to have access to guns. He also said those who knew the shooter from the incident most likely thought he should be institutionalized.

This isnt a gun problem, this is a mental problem, Trump said. Its not a question of laws, its really the people.

Trump, like so many others, incorrectly correlates mental illness with volatile behavior toward others when that’s hardly the case. Studies show that people with mental health issues are more likely to be victims of a violent crime than to perpetrate one. Data also suggests that only 3 to 5 percent of violent acts can be attributed to an individual with a serious mental illness.

And his Twitter narrative reveals that mental health issues, in his mind, are fodder for schoolyard taunting:

#Unfit#Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump

For years now, professional psychologists and armchair pundits alike have been diagnosing Donald Trump with a variety of mental illnesses, all from afar. This has proven roughly as effective at stopping him as the Democrats impeachment efforts. Yet, such impotence has not impeded A Duty to Warn, an organization of mental health professionals who still seem to think they can make a difference by pointing out that Trump is anything but a very stable genius. Their crowning effort, the crowdfunded documentary #Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump , is now available on VOD.

Heres a wild idea: What if being a giant asshole isnt a sign of mental illness? What if you cant easily wave away all the troubling questions raised by Trumps ascendancy with that label? What if all the shitty, glib discourse about Trumps mental state actually functions less like attacks on him and more like attacks on people with confirmed mental illnesses? You know, people who arent in positions of considerable power, who are far more likely than Trump to be harmed by furthering the stigma around their conditions.

Growing Scrutiny Of Uvalde School District Police Chief

Pete Arredondo, the school district police chief, is facing growing scrutiny over the response to the shooter.

Arredondo led the response, which state officials now say included the wrong decision of having armed police wait for an extended period outside the classroom where the gunman was killing children and teachers, without storming in. Arredondo has served as the chief of the school districts police force for two years and was also recently elected the city council, the New York Times reported.

The Times also noted that the department he leads, which includes five others, had done in-person training exercises to prepare for mass shootings, which included role-playing in school hallways. Arredondo had told district officials the training exercises were very successful, the paper reported. CNN has further context on Arredondo:

Arredondo posted on Facebook that his department was hosting an active shooter training at Uvalde high school in an effort to prepare local law enforcement to respond to any situation that may arise. A flyer for the event he posted stated that topics covered would include priorities for school-based law enforcement and how to stop the killing.

Donald Trump Needs Psychiatric Assessment Mental Health Doctors Tell Congress

A team of Washington, D.C.-licensed psychiatrists and the president of an organization of mental health professionals that has been warning against the mental unfitness of President Donald Trump are submitting documents to Congress calling for the commander-in-chief to be psychiatrically assessed.

World Mental Health Coalition President Bandy X. Lee hopes the move will provide information that can make the 25th Amendment possible at the same time as offering immediate security measures.

Calls are growing to remove Trump before Inauguration Day on January 20 following Wednesday’s storming of the Capitol Building by his supporters. He is accused of fomenting the chaotic scenes through his rhetoric and refusal to accept the election result.

Amid discussions over another possible impeachment process, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called for Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment of the Constitution, which allows them to determine if the president is no longer fit to carry out his duties.

Lee is a forensic psychiatrist who has taught at both the Yale School of Medicine and the Yale Law School and co-authored The New York Times bestseller, The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, which compiled evidence of Trump’s mental state.

Muzzling Its Members Is A Dereliction Of Duty By The American Psychiatric Association

In 1964, Fact magazine published an unscientific survey asking psychiatrists whether they thought the Republican nominee, Barry Goldwater, was psychologically fit to serve as president of the United States. The problem wasnt that professionals felt the need to share their views of what they considered Goldwaters dangerous ideas it was the irresponsible and often bizarre analyses that were in some cases based entirely on rank speculation. Goldwater is basically a paranoid schizophrenic who resembles Mao Tse-tung, one offered. Another said that he has the same pathological make-up as Hitler, Castro, Stalin and other known schizophrenic leaders. A third said that a megalomaniacal, grandiose omnipotence appears to pervade Mr. Goldwaters personality.

The American public is inadequately educated about mental health. It would take a serious, sustained explication, backed by the power and reach of a professional association, to help us understand why the emotional and psychological stability of our leaders matters and can have an impact on all of us. Every day legal experts weigh in on Donalds unconstitutional or norm-breaking behaviors. Since his covid-19 diagnosis, medical experts have speculated about the course of his illness and the potentially dangerous side effects he may be experiencing as a result of the experimental treatments hes received. Only the mental health experts have been effectively sidelined.

The Dangerous Case Of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists And Mental Health Experts Assess A President

Commentary: Mentally ill Trump poses an existential threat to the world ...

Just between the time that an email request from the book review editor of the Journal arrived to the time of sitting down to begin writing a first draft of this review , there was a flood of print and electronic media opinions on the interrelated topics of President Donald Trump’s mental health and perceived dangerousness. Further, elucidated during this discussion has been the controversy about the American Psychiatric Association’s position on the Goldwater Rule, which declares unethical and forbids all public opinions by psychiatrists about diagnoses and mental health status of public figures whom the opining party has not directly examined according to accepted standards for psychiatric evaluation.

To many psychiatrists, President Trump’s statements and behaviors were patently symptomatic of one or several mental disorders. The facts of the case and the serious risks of erosion of our constitutional democracy and possible nuclear annihilation of the world demanded that psychiatrists warn the public. The analogy to the silence of Germany’s educated and professional classes during Hitler’s ascendancy to power was too obvious to ignore but roughly 40 percent of the country does not agree that the president is evil or dangerous.

Reads Hidden Demeaning Or Threatening Meanings Into Benign Remarks Or Events

Trump believes in various conspiracy theories based on vague information from tiny corners of the Internet , which is the definition of finding hidden meanings in benign events. His favorite writer is conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who among other things helped get the 9/11 was an inside job conspiracy theory going.

Additionally, his overreactions to the petty like Sean Spicer being played by a woman on SNL or the size of his inauguration crowd betray a paranoia of anything he perceives as a threat to his image. The classic case of this is his weird defensiveness about the size of his hands.

Trump Says Kellyanne Conway ‘totally Destroyed’ Her ‘mentally Ill’ Husband

Donald Trump attacked the mental state of George Conway on Thursday, reviving a war of words in which Kellyanne Conway‘s husband claimed the former president had more than a couple of screws loose.

A short message was sent out by Trump’s Save America PAC with the image of a tweet featuring a screenshot of a tired-looking George Conway during an interview this week on CNN, which was focused on the Capitol riot, and a caption reading, “Is George Conway ok … ?”

“No, hes mentally ill, a very sick man. I dont know what Kellyanne did to him, but it must have been really bad. She has totally destroyed this guy his mind is completely shot!” Trump said.

George Conway, a conservative lawyer, ensnared headlines during the Trump administration when he repeatedly questioned Trump’s mental health. In 2019, he suggested Trump has narcissistic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder by tweeting out their respective pages from the American Psychiatric Association’s diagnostic manual. “Anything involving the use of brain cells is not his strong suit,” George Conway said in one of his several tweets on the matter.

He responded to Trump’s broadside by referencing E. Jean Carroll, a writer and columnist who accused Trump of raping her in a New York City department store more than two decades ago. Trump, who denies the claim, lost a bid in March to countersue Carroll after she sued him for defamation.

Kellyanne Conway defended her boss in 2019.
