Who Is Trump’s Chief Of Staff

Nbc Sources: Trump Picks Priebus As Chief Of Staff

Trump fires acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney | ABC News

Donald Trump has named Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, as his White House chief of staff, NBC News has learned.

Trump’s transition team confirmed the appointment Sunday afternoon, but sources said that the decision was finalized Saturday night

The Republican, who is serving his third term with the RNC, was reported to be at the top of Trump’s shortlist for the key White House position in the days following the election. That list also reportedly included Steve Bannon, Trump’s controversial campaign CEO whose website, Breitbart News, has espoused anti-Semitic and nationalist views.

Instead, Bannon will serve as chief strategist and senior counselor to the president, Trump’s transition team announced Sunday. Under Bannon, Breitbart.com has embraced racist conspiracy theories and become what Bannon termed “a platform for the alt-right.”

The choice of Priebus is certain to comfort establishment Republicans wary that the unpredictable candidate Trump will make a reappearance in the White House but one that could fuel resentment among the grassroots.

Priebus earned respect from Republicans over the course of his six-year tenure as head of the RNC, proving to be a powerful fundraising force who deftly navigated the party through the internal squabbling sparked by the rise of the conservative Tea Party movement following the 2010 election.

Biden’s Inaction Leaves $100m In Border

Nobody said the job was easy.

Former North Carolina Congressman Mark Meadows, just weeks on the job as President Trumps chief of staff, has already been brought to tears at work on several occasions, according to a report in the New York Times.

The waterworks took place at least twice during meetings with White House staff and in at least one case was witnessed by Trumps son-in-law Jared Kushner. The burst of emotions resulted from meetings discussing internal staffing changes.

Though he was long known for an emotional style in Congress, reps for the White House denied Meadows had shed any tears since coming to the West Wing.

Friends and colleagues in the House said they worried that Trump might be too tough a nut for the Tar Heel pol.

My worry for Mark is that the president is drawn to him as a person of quality, but now that he has him, he may just chew him up and spit him out the way he has done with so many people he has brought in to work for him, Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat, told the paper.

Meadows became Trumps fourth chief of staff since taking the job over from Mick Mulvaney at the end of March.

Six White House aides and a Trump campaign adviser including , President Trumps chief of staff have contracted the coronavirus, officials said, raising fears of another outbreak sweeping through the ranks of the nations top officials as cases surge to record levels in the country.

Mr. Meadows, who routinely shrugged off the need to wear masks and embraced Mr. Trumps strategy of playing down the threat from the coronavirus over the summer, informed a small group of White House advisers that he had tested positive for the virus on Wednesday, a senior administration official said late Friday.

Five other White House officials also tested positive for the virus in the days before and after Election Day, people familiar with the diagnoses told The New York Times. Bloomberg News also reported on additional cases around the president, who contracted the virus last month and spent three days in the hospital receiving experimental treatments.

Nick Trainer, who worked on the presidents campaign, has also tested positive for the coronavirus, a person briefed on his diagnosis said.

A few weeks ago, Mr. Meadows sought to keep an outbreak in Vice President Mike Pences office from becoming public.

As of Saturday morning, more than 9,830,800people in the United States had been infected with the coronavirus, and more than 236,500 had died.

That event took place in the Rose Garden and inside the White House.

Trump and Meadows are close now, but they got off to something of a rocky start. Meadows didn’t endorse him in 2016, though his wife Debbie campaigned for Trump something Trump brings up regularly as he riffs about Meadows in speeches.

“His wife I actually like better than him, to be honest,” Trump said at a victory rally of sorts in the East Room of the White House after his impeachment acquittal. “He doesn’t know that I know that he didn’t actually support me right from the beginning, but she did. And on my worst day right? on my worst day, my worst I won’t tell you why it was my worst, but it was not one of those good days she got on a bus, got many other buses and women all over North Carolina, and they toured North Carolina.”

Meadows is also known for having strong relationships with Democrats. He was close with the late Maryland Democrat and Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, tearing up as he spoke at the congressman’s funeral. While Cummings was alive, Meadows came to his defense when Trump went after him on Twitter and trashed the city of Baltimore as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”

Not a ‘yes-man’

California Democrat Ro Khanna said he figures there are at least 20 Democrats Meadows could call up at any time, which could prove useful if more bipartisan talks are needed on coronavirus aid. Khanna worked with Meadows on a bipartisan war powers resolution that Trump ultimately vetoed, which Khanna takes as a sign Meadows is willing to stand up to Trump.

“My hope is, Mark Meadows is a person of stature and substance and he’s not going to be a ‘yes-man’,” said Khanna. “I think he is somebody who will have the ability to share a candid perspective with the president. I know he has.”

Reasons Donald Trump Won The Presidential Election

Bolten says its good for the President to have the views of many advisers, but that only one person can be seen as directing the activities of the White House and the rest of the staff.

As chief of staff, Priebus is expected to play a role in managing President-elect Trumps legislative priorities. Priebus, who grew up in Kenosha Wis., shares a home state and a close relationship with Speaker Ryan, who today said Priebus brings to the table “hard work, determination and trust” from both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Priebus, 44, has been the longest-serving RNC chairman, winning the job in 2011 after serving as its general counsel. He unseated his boss, Michael Steele, and took over a party that was some $24 million in debt.

Priebus led the famous “autopsy” of the GOP after its loss in the 2012 election, which recommended shortening the primary season and endorsing immigration reform as a way of reaching out to Latino voters.

Priebus made an unsuccessful run for the Wisconsin state senate and in 2007 became chairman of the state GOP. In 2010, he helped elect Republican Scott Walker as governor and a GOP majority in the state Legislature, and it was clear his star was on the rise.

Oh, and the name? Reince is short for Reinhold.

What About Trump’s Announcement

The president said that Mr Mulvaney “has done an outstanding job while in the administration”.

“I look forward to working with him in this new capacity as we continue to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he tweeted.

I am pleased to announce that Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Office of Management & Budget, will be named Acting White House Chief of Staff, replacing General John Kelly, who has served our Country with distinction. Mick has done an outstanding job while in the Administration….

Donald J. Trump

In a tweet, Mr Mulvaney said the appointment was “a tremendous honour”.

“I look forward to working with the president and the entire team. It’s going to be a great 2019,” he wrote.

Friday’s announcement ends days of speculation about the new White House chief of staff – one of the most prestigious jobs in Washington.

While the president has the final say on policy, the chief of staff wields incredible informal power and influence, the BBC’s Anthony Zurcher in Washington says.

Mr Trump’s reported first choice for the post, Nick Ayers, made it clear last weekend that he did not want the post.

% Of President Trumps A Team Departures Have Undergone Serial Turnover As Of January 20 2021

Who is John Kelly, Trump’s New White House Chief of Staff?
Position
Unknown
SUMMARY: 27/60 A Team departures have turned over twice or more.
* Authors note: For the purposes of this study, we count Michael Dubke as the first communications director, since Sean Spicer was serving in a temporary capacity until the Trump administration filled the job with a permanent candidate.
** Authors note: Notice that there are multiple deputies under the chief of staff and White House counsel. The data reflect an attempt to track just a single deputy position and note the successor. However, there is minimal publicly available information on presidential staffing. It is also the case that a new chief of staff may not have a first among equals deputy chief of staff, such that the role may have changed since the original occupant. The same is true for White House Counsel. While Greg Katsas may have been the first among equals among the Deputy White House Counsel positions in 2017, the role may have changed under the new White House Counsel, Pat Cipollone.
*** Authors note: Upon the departure of former Deputy National Security Adviser Charles Kupperman, National Security Adviser Robert C. OBrien divided the duties of that position between Matthew Pottinger and Victoria Coates. On Feb. 20, 2020, the National Security Council said that Coates had left the position and been reassigned as a senior adviser to Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette on Jan. 7, reports indicated that Pottinger had resigned.

Who Does The Chief Of Staff Oversee

The Chief of Staff oversees the Executive Office of the President of the United States. This office was created in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and is responsible for a variety of critical functions in support of the presidents work and agenda.

Mulvaney, a GOP Young Gun, ran against Democratic incumbent John M. Spratt Jr. for South Carolina’s 5th congressional district. The race was highlighted by Mitt Romney‘s Free and Strong America PAC’s “Take Congress Back: 10 in ’10” initiative as one of the top 10 House challenger races. Mulvaney’s involvement in the now-defunct Edenmoor real estate development in Lancaster County, South Carolina became a campaign issue, with his opponents alleging that he misled the Lancaster County council and taxpayers to provide $30 million in public funding for the real estate development and that once the public funds had been approved, Mulvaney sold his interest in the development to a third party at a $7 million profit. Mulvaney denied the allegations and said the project’s failure was due to Democratic economic policies. He defeated Spratt, who had held the seat since 1983, with 55% of the vote.

Mulvaney’s campaign against Spratt was aided by a 501 organization named the Commission on Hope, Growth, and Opportunity. The group, which was established by anonymous donors and run by lobbyist Scott W. Reed, was accused by the watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington of violating federal campaign finance laws and disclosing false information to the Internal Revenue Service.

Senate Reaches Historic Deal On $2 Trillion Coronavirus Economic Rescue Package

It’s a precarious time for the White House to be between chiefs of staff, given that Trump is grappling with a public health crisis that threatens millions of Americans, testing his presidency just ahead of the November presidential election.

And complicating matters, both Meadows and Mulvaney have briefly each been in self quarantine due to possible exposure to the virus.

Confirming: Mark Meadows was advised this weekend that now 12 days prior at CPAC, he may have come in contact with the COVID-19 positive test individual. A precautionary test came back negative & he feels great. Hell be self-quarantined till the 14 day period passes Wednesday.

Meadows hasn’t voted on any bills since Trump named him chief of staff, including a previous multibillion-dollar coronavirus package. An aide says Meadows plans to resign from Congress around the end of March.

The constitution prohibits someone from serving in Congress and the executive branch at the same time. But Meadows has been at the White House, in and out of meetings. And Mulvaney is there, too.
