Terminations Of Temporary Protective Status
In directives by DHS Acting Secretary Elaine Duke, the Trump administration began rescinding Temporary Protective Status for an array of refugees of dire circumstances in their home countries on Sept. 1, 2017, and continuing through at least May 5, 2018:

Sudanese people: 1,000 allowed to live and work in the U.S. since 1997 amid armed conflict.

Nicaraguan people: 2,500 allowed to live and work in the U.S. since a 1999 hurricane.

Haitian people: 59,000 allowed to live and work in the U.S. since the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Salvadoran people: 200,000 allowed to live and work in the U.S. since the 2001 earthquake in El Salvador.

Nepalese people: 9,000 allowed to live and work in the U.S. since the 2015 earthquake in Nepal.

Honduran people: 57,000 allowed to live and work in the U.S. since a 1999 hurricane.
Retreating From Civil Rights
Trump can point to policy initiatives that have benefited Black or other minority groups, including criminal justice reforms that reduced prison sentences for thousands of Black men convicted of nonviolent, drug-related crimes.
About 4,700 inmates have been released or had their sentences reduced under the First Step Act, an attempt to reverse the lopsided legacy of the drug wars of the 1980s and 1990s, which disproportionately targeted African Americans. But this policy was championed primarily by Jared Kushner, Trumps son-in-law, and former officials said that Trump only agreed to support the measure when told it might boost his low poll numbers with Black voters.
Months later, when that failed to materialize, Trump went s—house crazy, one former official said, yelling at aides, Why the hell did I do that?
Manigault Newman was similarly excoriated when her efforts to boost funding for historically Black colleges failed to deliver better polling numbers for the president, officials said. Youve been at this for four months, Omarosa, Trump said, according to one adviser, but the numbers havent budged. Manigault Newman did not respond to a request for comment.
White House officials cited other initiatives aimed at helping people of color, including loan programs targeting minority businesses and the creation of opportunity zones in economically distressed communities.
I dont believe there is systemic racism in police departments, Barr said.

First 2020 Presidential Debate
At a debate with presidential candidate Joe Biden on September 29, 2020, moderator Chris Wallace asked Trump if he would âcondemn white supremacists and groups to say they need to stand down and not add to the violence.” Trump responded, âSure. Iâm willing to do that.â Trump asked for clarification, saying: “Who would you like me to condemn?” Biden said the Proud Boys. Trump then stated “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by, but I’ll tell you what, I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about Antifa and the left, because this is not a right-wing problem.”One researcher said that Proud Boys memberships on Telegram channels grew nearly 10 percent after the debate. The Washington Post reported that Trump’s comments were quickly “enshrined in memes, including one depicting Trump in one of the Proud Boysâ signature polo shirts. Another meme showed Trump’s quote alongside an image of bearded men carrying American flags and appearing to prepare for a fight. A third incorporated âSTAND BACK AND STAND BYâ into the group’s logo.”
He Refused To Condemn The White Supremacists Who Are Campaigning For Him
Three times in a row on Feb. 28, Trump sidestepped opportunities to renounce white nationalist and former KKK leader David Duke, who told his radio audience last week that voting for any candidate other than Trump is really treason to your heritage.
When asked by CNNs Jake Tapper if he would condemn Duke and say he didnt want a vote from him or any other white supremacists, Trump claimed that he didnt know anything about white supremacists or about Duke himself. When Tapper pressed him twice more, Trump said he couldnt condemn a group he hadnt yet researched.
By Feb. 29, Trump was saying that in fact he does disavow Duke, and that the only reason he didnt do so on CNN was because of a lousy earpiece. Video of the exchange, however, shows Trump responding quickly to Tappers questions with no apparent difficulty in hearing.
Its preposterous to think that Trump doesnt know about white supremacist groups or their sometimes violent support of him. Reports of neo-Nazi groups rallying around Trump go back as far as August.
A leader of the Virginia KKK who is backing Trump told a local TV reporter earlier this month, The reason a lot of Klan members like Donald Trump is because a lot of what he believes, we believe in.

The Justice Department Sued His Company Twice For Not Renting To Black People
When Trump was serving as the president of his familys real estate company, the Trump Management Corporation, in 1973, the Justice Department sued the company for alleged racial discrimination against black people looking to rent apartments in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
The lawsuit charged that the company quoted different rental terms and conditions to black rental candidates than it did with white candidates, and that the company lied to black applicants about apartments not being available. Trump called those accusations absolutely ridiculous and sued the Justice Department for $100 million in damages for defamation.
Without admitting wrongdoing, the Trump Management Corporation settled the original lawsuit two years later and promised not to discriminate against black people, Puerto Ricans or other minorities. Trump also agreed to send weekly vacancy lists for his 15,000 apartments to the New York Urban League, a civil rights group, and to allow the NYUL to present qualified applicants for vacancies in certain Trump properties.
Just three years after that, the Justice Department sued the Trump Management Corporation again for allegedly discriminating against black applicants by telling them apartments werent available.
Opposition To Diversity Training
In September 2020, Trump directed federal government agencies to discontinue anti-bias and racial sensitivity training for their employees. A memo from Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought says Trump has instructed him to cancel funding for what it calls “divisive, anti-American propaganda”. The memo instructed Federal agencies to “begin to identify all contracts or other agency spending related to any training on ‘critical race theory,’ ‘white privilege,’ or any other training or propaganda effort that teaches or suggests either that the United States is an inherently racist or evil country or that any race or ethnicity is inherently racist or evil.” Trump cited conservative media reports and retweeted Twitter posts to describe the policy.
In October 2020, the Justice Department suspended all diversity and inclusion and implicit bias training. Major universities also began to cancel diversity training, fearing loss of funding if found to be out of compliance with the executive order.

Rational Trump Voter : Entrepreneurs
Even when entrepreneurs and small business owners expressed concerns about Trump and his administration, they begrudgingly admit that he has been good for business. As early as a year into the Trump administration, a survey revealed that 65% of business owners thought that the new tax regime was the best thing the government did for their companies last year. Almost all of them said that they would plough back their savings from tax cuts into expanding their businesses.
A more relaxed regulatory environment has also been ushered in by Trump, who signed an executive order in 2017 requiring agencies to abolish two regulations for every new one issued. If there was ever a quote to demonstrate the limited margins in which such economic players vote, it is this one from Martin George, a CEO of a small enterprise in Indianapolis: “Small-business people try not to get political. We stay in our lane. We go to the office. We work.”
The perception that Trump is pro-entrepreneurship and small business had given some an early indicator that this was going to help him among minority communities heavily dominated by small business ownership. Trump Promotes The Birther Movement
During former President Barack Obamas 2012 campaign for re-election, Trump promoted a conspiracy theory alleging that Obama, the nations first African American president, had been born in Kenya and was thus not eligible to be U.S. president .
A lot of people are questioning his birth certificate, Trump said on CNBC in May 2012. Theyre questioning the authenticity of his birth certificate.
Trump had pushed the birth certificate issue in 2011 and said he was at least partly responsible when the White House released Obamas long-form birth certificate from a hospital in Hawaii in hopes of ending the discussion.
During his own campaign for president in 2016, Trump abandoned his false claim that Obama was not born in the United States after spending five years saying Obama started life as a foreigner .
President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Period, Trump said at a September 2016 event in Washington at a Trump International Hotel down the street from the White House. Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again.

Trumps Embrace Of The Birther Conspiracy

It begins with kind of whispers and blog posts, and then insinuations made by some cable TV host or talk radio host, that there was something different, something other about Barack Obama, the skepticism of him, that he must have done something wrong. Theres this hyper obsession around his college transcripts because could he have really gotten into all those schools and done so well at them, right? And then theres this obsession with his origin, with where hes from, where he was born. And this became a very simple and in some ways effective means of otherizing then-candidate Obama: Well, hes not even from here hes not one of us. Prove it. Prove you were born here.
Now, it was clear that President Obama was born in the United States. It was clear that he was eligible to be elected president if the voters so chose. But why the birther movement was so powerful was because it spoke to all types of other anxieties that many white Americans had about Barack Obama that there was something about him that was just different that there was something that was sinister that he must have cheated that he must be bending or breaking the rules.
Trump Denied Responsibility For The Racist Incidents That Followed His Election
While the hate speech and racist violence emboldened by his campaign only escalated after his win, Trump downplayed the incidents and half-heartedly denounced them.
There were nearly 900 hate incidents across the U.S. in the 10 days following the election, a report released last month by the Southern Poverty Law Center found. Those attacks include vandals drawing swastikas on a synagogue, schools, cars and driveways an assailant beating a gay man while saying the president says we can kill all you faggots now and children telling their black classmates to sit in the back of the school bus.
In nearly 40 percent of those incidents, the SPLC found, people explicitly invoked the president-elects name or his campaign slogans.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Anti-Defamation League have also tracked significant growth in racist and bigoted attacks.
Weve seen a great deal of really troubling stuff in the last week, a spike in harassment, a spike in vandalism, physical assaults. Something is happening that was not happening before, ADL national director Jonathan Greenblatt told The New Yorker.
Despite those findings, Trump insisted on CBS 60 Minutes the Sunday after his election that there had only been a very small amount of racist incidents.
I am so saddened to hear that, Trump said when asked about the racist incidents. And I say, Stop it. If it helps, I will say this, and I will say right to the camera: Stop it.

Minorities As Uppity Ungrateful And Unintelligent
He frequently criticizes prominent African-Americans for being unpatriotic, ungrateful and disrespectful.
He called Puerto Ricans who criticized his administrations response to Hurricane Maria politically motivated ingrates.
He also has a pattern of criticizing African-Americans asunintelligent orracist.
In July 2019, Trump suggested that four minority Democratic congresswomen, all of whom are American citizens and three of whom were born in the United States, should go back to the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.
Democratic Congresswomen Should Go Back To Their Countries
On July 14, 2019, Trump tweeted about four Democratic congresswomen, and although he did not mention any member of Congress by name, it was widely inferred that he was referring to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib. This group, known collectively as the Squad, had verbally sparred with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi a week earlier:

Trump said that he had been watching Fox & Friends, that his statements were aimed at bringing more attention to the four congresswomen because he believed they were ‘good foils’.
